    • Value models, in form of economical optimization functions, are often proposed to frontload engineering design activities. However, literature argues that, when qualitative data and assumptions prevail, a qualitative assessment of the ‘goodness’ of a design is preferable against a numerical (and monetary-based) encoding of preferences. This paper explores how a model-based approach can support deliberation about value in cross-functional design teams. Emerging from case studies in the road compaction equipment industry, the paper analyzes preferences for value modelling support when it comes to iteratively translate customer desires into terms meaningful for engineering design decision-making. It further prescribes a framework for value-driven engineering design that considers the need to update the value model definition as far as new information become available in the process, moving from qualitative to quantitative. The findings highlight the role the proposed chain of value models plays in terms of providing a shared reference to stimulate value discussions across functions and organizational roles, which is something that does not naturally happen in the organization today.

    • With increasing complexities in the heavy duty construction equipment, early fault detection of certain components in the machine becomes more and more challenging due to too many fault code generated when a failure occurs. The axle is one of such component. The axle transfers driving torque from the transmission to the wheels and axle failure may result in costly downtime of construction equipment. To reduce service cost and to improve uptime, adequate condition monitoring based on sensor data from the axle is considered. Vibration is measured on the axle. Analysis of the data has been carried out using adequate signal processing methods. The results indicate that the vibration properties of the axle are relevant for early fault detection of the axle. In this way; the health of the axle may be continuously monitored on-board using the vibration information and if the axle health starts to degrade a service and/or repair may be scheduled well in advance of a potential axle failure and in that way the downtime of a machine may be reduced.

    • Improving uptime is paramount in the heavy duty construction equipment business. Failure ofcritical components in the heavy duty machine may lead to unnecessary stops and expensive downtime. The torque converter, a complex omponent of the driveline, transmits and multiplies torque from the engine to the gearbox, and its failure may not only lead to the machine standing still but may also lead to damage of other parts of the automatic transmission. For adequate condition monitoring of the torque converter, different sensor data are measured on a construction equipment machine during controlled driving sessions. Vibration has been measured on the torque converter. An initial investigation of the vibration measured on the torque converter has been carried out to identify its vibration properties in order to enable its health monitoring to prevent failure. Initial signal analysis of the data have been carried out using Order Power Spectrum and Order Modulation Spectrum methods. The results indicate that the torque converter vibration properties contain information relevant for early fault detection.

  • On-board Clutch Slippage Detection and Diagnosis in Heavy Duty Machine

    • In order to reduce unnecessary stops and expensive downtime originating from clutch failure of construction equipment machines; adequate real time sensor data measured on the machinein combination with feature extraction and classification methods may be utilized.This paper, based on a study at Volvo Construction Equipment,presents a framework with feature extraction methods and an anomaly detection module combined with Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) for on-board clutch slippage detection and diagnosis in a heavy duty equipment. The feature extraction methods used are Moving Average Square Value Filtering (MASVF) and a measure of the fourth order statistical properties of the signals implemented as continuous queries over data streams. The anomaly detection module has two components,the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and the Logistics Regression classifier. CBR is a learning approach that classifies faults by creating a new solution for a new fault case from the solution of the previous fault cases. Through use of a data stream management system and continuous queries (CQs), the anomaly detection module continuously waits for a clutch slippage event detected by the feature extraction methods, the query returns a set of features which activates the anomaly detection module. The first component of the anomaly detection module trains a GMM to extracted features while the second component uses a Logistic Regression classifier for classifying normal and anomalous data. When an anomalyis detected, the Case-Based diagnosis module is activated for fault severity estimation.

    • This paper discusses the new demands that are placed on tools and methods used in industrial product development due to the transformation of industrial companies from hardware producers to function providers, including some effects on collaborative engineering. Traditionally, manufacturing industry focuses on providing excellent goods, i.e. hardware. Services occur on an aftermarket, as an add-on to the developed hardware. By supplying functions, companies can gain control of the aftermarket. The responsibility and availability of the functions provided by hardware remains with the function provider as well as the responsibility for maintenance and spare parts. This approach, a new business mode, is a response to a necessity for business-to-business collaboration to gain economy––of-scale partnerships in the extended enterprise and ultimately to be able to develop competitive offers [1] [2]. Hence, the shift in view is a move towards providing functions, taking a lifecycle commitment for the hardware as well as optimizing the availability of its function in the customers’’ system. The redirection from hardware development to a process where development of functions is in focus is hereafter referred to as Functional Product Development.

    • Industrial product development focused companies, such as car manufacturers, have traditionally developed and sold hardware products. In professional business-to-business relations, the integration of hardware and software with services has been identified as a shift in focus in the seller-buyer relationship from hardware development to function development and the way a sustainable economic performance could be achieved. Therefore, the common perception today of where the product is mainly hardware only, needs to be expanded to include a definition where it does not even have to have any hardware at all. Expanding the product definition therefore places additional demands on the design and development of hardware, software and services that may all be part of the functional product. Further, this article discusses how customer requirements need to be handled when developing a total offer in the form of a functional product. Finally, the traits needed in the engineer who is to develop it while being part of amulti-cultural team are discussed, possibly a geographically distributed team.

  • Towards Changeability Quantification for Product-Service Systems Design

    • Tough competition and volatile global markets have pushed the manufacturing industries to develop solutions more customer-centric with optimal utilization of resources. One of the key reasons behind developing a customer-centric solution is the increased customer value that imparts a competitive edge to the manufacturing industries, eventually leading them to sustain their businesses. Over the years, this has led the transition of manufacturing industries towards offering “functions” instead of pure products. Academic literature often describes this change as the transition towards offering a Product-Service System (PSS), where the functions are typically delivered as a mix of products and services.Developing PSS is a highly challenging task as value entails a multi-dimensional viewpoint based on different stakeholders and many novel technologies integrated along uncertain lifecycles. An optimal PSS for a specific occasion becomes situational as this occasion is bound to change due to underlying future operational uncertainties. This view accentuates the need for inculcating mechanisms in the PSS to sustain value under operational uncertainties, thus attaining value robustness. Literature in systems engineering elaborates on changeability as one of the cores for developing a value-robust system. A changeable system is a system that can change internally as a response to the changes externally to maintain the value expectation over time. With this frame of reference, it is argued that the notion of changeability can be a good supplement for developing a value-robust PSS. From a design perspective, changeability needs to be quantified to strike a balance between the total change-related cost and the benefits.In this light, this thesis is directed toward the quantification of changeability for supporting early design decisions concerning value-robust PSS. To achieve this goal, this thesis first highlights the challenges concerning changeability quantification for a value-robust PSS design. Building on these challenges, it delves into established techniques of design optimization, dynamic programming, and discrete-event simulation to propose a framework that can exemplify the relationship between system configuration, system control, and contextual variables to gain insights about a suitable combination of configuration and control of the system to maintain its value in uncertain operational scenarios. To enhance the proposed framework with operational data, an outline of the state-of-the-art in the collection and utilization of operational data to support design decision-making is presented. Finally, the thesis concludes by highlighting the strength and weaknesses of the proposed framework along with some industrial implications. Broadly, two challenges are emphasized in the proposed framework, computational complexity and lack of contextual knowledge, and addressing them has been left for future studies.

    • A stream validation system called SVALI is developed in order to continuouslyvalidate data streams from industrial equipment. The functional data model of SVALI allows the user to dene meta-data and queries about the equipment in terms of types and functions. The two system functions model-andvalidate and learn-and-validate provide such validation functionality. The experiments show that parallel stream processing enables SVALI to scale very well with respect to response time and system throughput. The paper is based on a real world application for wheel loader slippage detection at Volvo Construction Equipment.

    • Modelling and simulation of the dynamic behaviour of catenary-pantograph interaction is an important part when assessing the capability of a current collection system for railway traffic. The large variation in infrastructure characteristics in different countries and railway companies, different types of traffic, designs of pantographs etc. makes it almost impossible to develop a final simulation model of such a system. Instead, it would be favourable to have a tool that has the ability to set up models of such systems, choose relevant detail of the models, run simulations and finally visualize the results. To make the tool useful for engineers, design experts as well as simulation experts, the functionality of the tool must be worked out. Aspects on computer simulation such as developed models, simulation methods and computer tools are presented. The aim is to develop a scenario that considers different designs, models, solution methods and user levels. The scenario focuses on how to structure the use of simulation of dynamics in catenary-pantograph development. A scenario is sketched built on different user levels, a modular structure and a structure for information management
