  • Prediction of Laminar-Turbulent Transition on an Airfoil at High Level of Free-Stream Turbulence
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Progress in Flight Physics Vol. 7. - 9785945881655 ; , s. 704-
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Prediction of laminar-turbulent transition at high level of free-stream turbulence in boundary layers of airfoil geometries with external pressure gradient changeover is in focus. The aim is a validation of a transition model for transition prediction in turbomachinery applications. Numerical simulations have been performed by using a transition model by Langtry and Menter for a number of different cases of pressure gradient, at Reynolds number-range, based on the airfoil chord, 50 000 ≤ Re ≤ 500 000 and free-stream turbulence intensities 2 % and 4 %. The validation of the computational results against the experimental data showed good performance of used turbulence model for all test cases.

  • Tolerance Specification Optimization for Economic and Ecological Sustainability
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Production Engineering. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 2194-0533 .- 2194-0525. ; Part F1158, s. 865-874, s. 865-874
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the final stages of product development, dimensional tolerances are specified by designers to ensure high functionality at low costs. A traditional approach to this decision-making process is to minimize economic losses to the manufacturer and the consumer. This paper presents a new approach for tolerance allocation optimization that considers sustainability not only from economic costs but also ecological costs. The framework is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem and explored with a case study on the design of an automotive body panel. Results of the case study include Pareto frontiers of non-dominated optimal solutions along with a parametric study to explore the influence of material choice on the results.

  • Functional product development challenges collaborative work practices
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Virtual team leadership and collaborative engineering advancements. - Hershey PA : Information Science Reference. - 9781605661100 - 1605661104 - 9781605661117 - 1605661112 ; , s. 203-216
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Developing service-laden products in a virtual extended enterprise implies a wider distribution of resources and product development (PD) team members than what is the case today. In this setting, the challenge is getting a cross-disciplinary distributed team to collaborate effectively over distance using not only the tools available today, but also new tools and approaches. One such activity-based approach, based on an actual Volvo Aero service-provision process, is presented in this article. Supplying a physical product as part of a service contract within an extended enterprise demands increased speed and quality of the predictions the supplier wants to make in order to keep track of the product functionality, its cost effectiveness and lifecycle cost. One approach that has been proven in engineering is modeling and simulation, here implemented as activity-based simulation of an actual industrial work process that provides a maintenance service. The activity-based simulation approach is realized in the industry standard simulation environment MATLAB. It is created as a demonstrator of one of several future tools that may help a virtual extended enterprise to face the challenge of supplying function or services to the customer more effectively. Conclusions regarding Collaborative Working Environments include new requirements on quality of tools for supporting functional product development regarding knowledge availability, usability, security and interoperability. Conclusions also support the suggested approach concerning development of distributed, modular activity-based process simulation models as a suitable approach for supporting functional product development

  • Implications Beyond Silicon Valley
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Management for Professionals. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 2192-810X .- 2192-8096. ; Part F581, s. 151-171
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter closes this book by investigating the applicability of the Silicon Valley Model to firms in industries outside the IT/Internet sectors, located in other parts of the world. We see that individual elements of the Model are in fact widely used elsewhere: Many companies have an inspiring and socially significant vision or mission, a strong investment in hiring and supporting creative people, a commitment to being ambidextrous, etc. It is not so common as yet, however, to see the entire Silicon Valley Model used as a comprehensive “management system” with all of the interlinked elements working together. One approach for introducing the entire model may be to use it first in dedicated innovation units within a big firm; examples of this approach are given and issues are discussed. The chapter (and the book) ends by reiterating the advantages of the Silicon Valley Model. It appears to be a management model extremely well suited to an era when every industry and location is experiencing waves of profound and rapid change—just as the industries in Silicon Valley have done for decades.

  • Life-cycle Perspectives of Product/Service-Systems : In Design Theory
  • 2009. - 1
  • Ingår i: Introduction to Product/Service-System Design. - London : Springer. - 9781848829084 ; , s. 31-49
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Manufacturers are moving more and more towards the business approach of Product/Service Systems in order to achieve greater revenue. Product/Service Systems have many benefits such as achieving closer customer connection and generating increased profit from manufactured products. However, in order to achieve a Product/Service System which is adapted for this business approach, the products and services used need to consider a life-cycle perspective. The business approach of Product/Service Systems allows for the provider to control the flows of physical products, both the forward flow to the user and the reverse flow of products back to the provider. This new logic of material/product flows allows for adaptations along the product life-cycle. For example, maintenance and end-of-life strategies such as remanufacturing can become more beneficial due to the new circumstances that product/service systems provide the manufacturer. The aim of this chapter is to elucidate how manufacturers can develop their product/service systems with a life-cycle perspective. It shows the many aspects that should be considered throughout the life-cycle of both physical products and services. In addition, several considerations and theories are presented for the different stages of the Product/Service System life-cycle. Finally, this chapter presents theory on product/service design with a life-cycle perspective, which serves as a base for the practical design considerations presented in chapter (ID21) of this book.

  • Life-cycle Perspectives of Product/Service-Systems: Practical Design Experiences
  • 2009. - 1
  • Ingår i: Introduction to Product/Service-System Design. - London : Springer. - 9781848829084 ; , s. 50-70
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many manufacturers are moving more and more towards the business approach of product/service-systems in order to achieve more revenues. The business approach of product/service-systems puts new requirements on products in comparison to traditional selling. In order to achieve a product/service-system adapted for this business approach, the products and services used need to consider a life-cycle perspective. Having a life-cycle perspective on products and services in the business strategy of product/service-systems is becoming increasingly important as the strategy emerges and more and more companies see the benefits of controlling a larger share of the product value chain. The objective of this chapter is to elucidate how manufacturers have worked with, or could adapt their products for, product/service-systems. Supporting this are results from several case studies, performed at companies that manufacture household appliances, soil compactors and forklift trucks. A key factor when developing products for product/service-systems is to design the product from a life-cycle perspective, considering all the product’s life-cycle phases, e.g. manufacturing, use, maintenance and end-of-life treatment. Several design improvements, all of which are fairly inexpensive and easy to implement, are described. Many of these improvements deal with the accessibility of parts and components during maintenance and remanufacturing operations, and several of the design improvements could reduce the need and cost for maintenance, repair and remanufacturing.

  • A calculation model for ergonomics cost-benefit analyses in early product development stages
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Advances in ergonomics in manufacturing. - : CRC Press. - 9781439870402 ; , s. 399-408
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Increasing international competition between companies has put high focus on cost-cutting actions at all levels in companies and organizations. In product development there are many design requirements to meet and often tough project budgets to keep. Requirements that are considered not profitable will often be neglected, which often affects assembly ergonomics. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the relationship between ergonomics, assembly related quality errors and associated costs and develop a cost-beneficial assessment model. The results showed that ergonomics high risk issues had 5-8 times as many quality errors as low risk issues and the earlier risk issues were found the less were the action costs. A model for cost-benefit analyses was developed based on the obtained quality data.
