  • Project: CASTT - Centre for Automotive Systems Technologies and Testing
  • 2007
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Through the Centre for Automotive Systems Technologies and Testing, Luleå University of Technology aims to first of all support automotive winter testing in Northern Sweden. This means to support the local automotive test entrepreneurs and through them their customers: the car manufacturers and their suppliers. To succeed in this task, the center relies on the university's areas of leading research and most importantly on the cooperation between those areas.

  • Elastic Waves of a Single Elasto-Hydrodynamically Lubricated Contact
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Tribology letters. - : Springer. - 1023-8883 .- 1573-2711. ; 65:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Elastic waves are widely used for condition monitoring of rolling element bearings through vibration or acoustic emission measurements . While vibration signals are understood to a high degree due to many scientific investigations as well as a long history of usage in the field, acoustic emission signals of rolling element bearings are poorly understood. Therefore, this investigation presents simulation studies and measurements of a single elasto-hydrodynamically lubricated (EHL) contact. In this investigation the EHL contact is a ball bouncing on a lubricated plate. The simulation based on Green’s function and the measurements based on a accelerometer to some extent agree. A shift of zero frequencies towards higher frequencies when compared to Hertzian reference measurements was determined for an infinite plate setup. Taking boundary restrictions into account, elastic waves of a Hertzian contact and an EHL contact only differ by a damping of higher resonances which is most likely caused by the EHL film.

  • Road grip test in Arjeplog
  • 2008
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Swedish road administration sees a need to improve the road grip estimation capacity for the Swedish road system. The challenge is to find methods to measure road grip fast and reliable. There where six different system types at the tests in Arjeplog, three continuous, two system measuring road grip through deceleration and one system based on GPS and accelerometers. Two system types used air craft runway tires. The other systems used either studded winter tires or friction winter tires. Test runs where performed and road grip where recorded for three different surface types, old system 2000 ice, polished ice and new system 2000 ice. Weather data was collected during the three days. It is clear that all systems can detect changes in road grip. It is clear that continuous systems hold an information advantage over the sequence oriented systems. For measurements of road grip on winter roads, we recommend that rubber compounds adapted for cold conditions are used, as the resolution of the road grip measurement where better. In extreme condition like on polished ice, studded winter tires increase the road grip significantly.

  • Characterisation of the Contact between Cross-Country Skis and Snow: A Macro-Scale Investigation of the Apparent Contact
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Lubricants. - : MDPI. - 2075-4442. ; 10:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a cross-country skiing competition, the time difference between the winner and the skier coming in at second place is typically very small. Since the skier spends much of the energy on overcoming resistive forces, a relatively small reduction in these forces can have a significant impact on the results. The resistive forces come partly from the friction, at the tribological interface between the ski and the snow, and as with many tribological processes, the characterisation of its origin plays an important role in determining the frictional properties. Furthermore, in cross-country ski friction, there are several scales impacting the frictional performance, with the major contributors being the ski-camber profile and ski-base structure. Macro-scale measurements of the ski-camber profile under loading are often used to determine how adequate the ski is for use under specific conditions. The characteristic properties usually assessed are the force required to collapse the ski in order to obtain a certain camber height, the topography of the kick-wax zone, and the length (determined by simple means) of the frictional interfaces associated with the rear- and front glide zones, i.e., the apparent contact length. These measurements are, however, commonly performed by loading the ski against a much stiffer counter surface than snow and this affects the quantification of the characteristic properties. To date, some mathematical models have been proposed, but there is no reliable approach for determining the macro-scale properties of the contact between a cross-country ski and a counter surface using simulations. In the present paper, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been trained to predict the ski-camber profile for various loads applied at different positions. A well-established deterministic approach has been employed to simulate the contact between the ANN-predicted ski-camber profile and a linearly elastic body with a flat upper surface, representing the snow. Our findings indicate that this method is feasible for the determination of relevant macro-scale contact characteristics of different skis with snow. Moreover, we show that the apparent contact area does not linearly depend on the load and that the material properties of the counter surface also exert a large impact when quantifying the apparent contact area and the average apparent contact pressure.

  • Characterisation of the Contact between Cross-Country Skis and Snow: On the Multi-Scale Interaction between Ski Geometry and Ski-Base Texture
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Lubricants. - : Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI). - 2075-4442. ; 11:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In elite endurance sports, marginal differences in finishing times drive ongoing equipment improvement to enhance athlete performance. In cross-country skiing, researchers, since the 1930s, have faced the challenge of minimising the resistance caused by friction in the contact between skis and snow. This study was designed to evaluate the multi-scale interaction between the macro-scale ski-camber profile and the micro-scale ski-base texture. Considerations included real contact area, average interfacial separation, and total reciprocal interfacial separation between the ski and snow, which are properties that are intimately coupled to ski–snow friction. We found that both the profile of the ski camber and the texture of the ski base play decisive roles in determining viscous friction. At the same time, the texture of the ski base exerts a greater impact on the average real contact pressure, real contact area, and minimal average interfacial separation between the ski and snow than the ski-camber profile.

  • Absolute Measurement of Elastic Waves Excited by Hertzian Contacts in Boundary Restricted Systems
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Tribology letters. - : Springer. - 1023-8883 .- 1573-2711. ; 65:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In most applied monitoring investigations using acoustic emission, measurements are carried out relatively, even though that limits the use of the extracted information. The authors believe acoustic emission monitoring can be improved by instead using absolute measurements. However, knowledge about absolute measurement in boundary restricted systems is limited. This article evaluates a method for absolute calibration of acoustic emission transducers and evaluates its performance in a boundary restricted system. Absolute measured signals of Hertzian contact excited elastic waves in boundary restricted systems were studied with respect to contact time and excitation energy. Good agreement is shown between measured and calculated signals. For contact times short enough to avoid interaction between elastic waves and initiating forces, the signals contain both resonances and zero frequencies, whereas for longer contact times the signals exclusively contained resonances. For both cases, a Green’s function model and measured signals showed good agreement.

  • The Detection of Plastic Deformation in Rolling Element Bearings by Acoustic Emission
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Tribology International. - : Elsevier. - 0301-679X .- 1879-2464. ; 110, s. 209-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The detection of plastic deformation caused by particle contamination in rolling element bearings using acoustic emission is reliable at low speeds as shown in several studies. However, there are no studies at greater speeds of the detection of plastic deformation by acoustic emission in rolling element bearings. The acoustic emission signals of rolling element bearings have, however, been shown to be dominated by transient force signals which are elastic waves caused by transient forces acting at the raceway surface. The results of the test showed a dominance of transient force signals at elevated speeds, which masks signals caused by plastic deformation and prohibits the detection of particle contamination, while at low rotational speed plastic deformation is detected by acoustic emission.

  • Wall friction coefficient estimation through modelling of powder die pressing experiment
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Powder Metallurgy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0032-5899 .- 1743-2901. ; 43:2, s. 132-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Forming of PM components through powder pressing is a process, which is influenced by the friction between the powder and the tool walls. For good performance of the pressing process it is of great interest to understand and estimate the effects of powder-wall friction. However, quantification of the friction coefficient between the powder and the tool is a delicate task. Local contact conditions, such as contact stress, must be measured or otherwise estimated in order to evaluate the coefficient of friction. Here, the friction coefficient is estimated by combining an experiment with modelling of the experiment. Two methods for assessment of friction are presented, an optimization approach using finite element analyses and an analytical approach. Experimental data are taken from the single action cold pressing of a cylinder shaped component.
