  • Li-ion batteries for peak shaving, price arbitrage, and photovoltaic self-consumption in commercial buildings : A Monte Carlo Analysis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Energy Conversion and Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0196-8904 .- 1879-2227. ; 234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the benefits of introducing Li-ion batteries as energy storage unit in the commercial sector by considering a representative building with a photovoltaic system. Only the costs and revenues related to the installation and operation of the battery are considered in this study. The operational strategy of the battery consists in balancing the following processes through day-ahead forecasts for both electricity consumption and photovoltaic production: shaving a targeted peak, performing price arbitrage, and increasing photovoltaic selfconsumption. By reviewing the electricity price cost for commercial buildings from several companies around the world, a general electricity price structure is defined. Afterwards, a Monte Carlo Analysis is applied for three locations with different solar irradiation levels to study the impact of climate, electricity price components, and other seven sensitive parameters on the economic viability of Li-ion batteries. The Monte Carlo Analysis shows that the most sensitive parameters for the net present value are the battery capacity, the battery price, and the component of the electricity price that relates to the peak power consumption. For Stockholm, one of the investigated locations, the corresponding Pearson correlation coefficients are -0.67, -0.66, and 0.19 for the case were no photovoltaic system is installed. For the considered battery operational strategies, the current investment and annual operation costs for the Li-ion battery always lead to negative net present values independently of the location. Battery prices lower than 250 US$/kWh start to manifest positive net present values when combining peak shaving, price arbitrage, and photovoltaic self-consumption. However, the integration of a photovoltaic system leads to a reduced economic viability of the battery by reducing the revenues generated by the battery while performing peak shaving.

  • Vectorized rooftop area data for 90 cities in China
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scientific Data. - : Springer Nature. - 2052-4463. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reliable information on building rooftops is crucial for utilizing limited urban space effectively. In recent decades, the demand for accurate and up-to-date data on the areas of rooftops on a large-scale is increasing. However, obtaining these data is challenging due to the limited capability of conventional computer vision methods and the high cost of 3D modeling involving aerial photogrammetry. In this study, a geospatial artificial intelligence framework is presented to obtain data for rooftops using high-resolution open-access remote sensing imagery. This framework is used to generate vectorized data for rooftops in 90 cities in China. The data was validated on test samples of 180 km(2) across different regions with spatial resolution, overall accuracy, and F1 score of 1 m, 97.95%, and 83.11%, respectively. In addition, the generated rooftop area conforms to the urban morphological characteristics and reflects urbanization level. These results demonstrate that the generated dataset can be used for data support and decision-making that can facilitate sustainable urban development effectively.

  • Performance improvement of metal hydride hydrogen storage tanks by using phase change materials
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 320, s. 119290-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In metal hydride based hydrogen storage tanks, heat transfer fluid (HTF) has been extensively used to continuously transfer the reaction heat for promoting the reaction via heat exchangers. In this study, the phase change material (PCM) is integrated with the tank to enhance heat transfer and recycle the reaction heat. A novel storage tank with a simple concentric straight-tube heat exchanger surrounded by PCM is put forward to improve the hydrogen storage performance. A numerical model is built to track the transfer and reaction process. By comparison, the new tank shows better heat transfer and storage performance, and the hydrogen absorption time is shortened by 60.2% than that of the tank without PCM. For the new tank, the optimal amount of PCM is obtained, based on which the increased absorption pressure could effectively accelerate the heat discharge and reaction rate during the absorption process. However, the increased inlet velocity of HTF has a limited improvement effect on heat transfer and reaction performance. Furthermore, on the PCM side of the tank, the addition of fins and increasing the thermal conductivity of PCM had little effect on the performance of the tank.

  • Understanding the development and interaction of wake induced by an open centre turbine and its array design implications
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Ocean Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0141-1187 .- 1879-1549. ; 129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The open centre turbine can be easily deployed with a kite-like mooring system, which is promising to harvest renewable marine resources due to its higher energy conversion efficiency, and lower cost, as well as the min-imum impacts on the submarine environment. However, the multi-turbines deployment is still a great challenge due to the interaction between the wake flow generated by each device. Understanding the wake development is critical to implementing a strategy for multi-turbine deployment and minimizing the impact of the array on the submarine environment, the shore bed and the coast. This work aims to define the wake morphology and the multi-device configuration for the open centre turbines by applying the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis, and the Jensen model, validated by scaled ex-periments for traditional turbines. The first step of the research deals with a stand-alone fully resolved turbine geometry. The annular rotor works like a Venturi channel: the flow passing through the central hole rises its velocity and reduces the pressure behind the rotor plane. The induced suction effect reduces the tangential flow velocity components, containing either the wake radial expansion to 1.6R (turbine radius) and axial extension to 6D (turbine diameter). The wake takes a cylindrical shape and the flow field outside this cylinder can be assumed as undisturbed. The second step of research deals with the study of an optimal multi-device layout. The parameters to be found are the distance between rotors' rows and turbines' wheelbase, under the condition that the power of each turbine is almost equal. For a 2 staggered turbines layout, a wheelbase of 3D and a distance between rows of 5D allow for keeping the devices' performances constant, being, in both cases, the array Cp = 0.414. For 3 turbines in two staggered rows, the optimal configuration is characterized by a wheelbase of 1.5D and a distance between rows of 3D, with an array Cp = 0.413.The key to this performance is the cylindrical wake generated by the open centre rotor geometry: in the multi -device configuration any turbine is decoupled, so there is no mutual disturbance even at reduced inter-device clearances.

  • Crowdfunding preferences for a sustainable milk product with integrated photovoltaic water pumping system in China
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the role of potential investors in financing renewable energy systems—specifically, relating to crowdfunding as a financing mechanism, with the enhancement of internet and social-media tools. The research question in this study is whether crowdfunding with a novel socio-technical product reward program attracts potential customers to a more sustainable milk product with a specific integrated photovoltaic water pumping (PVWP) system. The particular case study we empirically investigated is product reward crowdfunding in dairy milk production in China. The milk production chain was supplied by PVWP system integration, which generated solar energy both for feed production for dairy cows and for the operation of dairy farms. 48 semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted between the research team and customers in order to perform qualitative analyses of the determinants of customers’ milk purchase behaviors. In addition, 357 online surveys were collected for quantitative analysis. Binary and ordered probit regressions were employed to use survey date to systematically estimate purchase intention and willingness-to-pay for sustainable milk. Customer behaviors, environmental consciousness, and individual socio-demographic factors were investigated as potential explanatory variables. Over 82% of the survey participants showed intentions to purchase the sustainable milk with the PVWP system. In the survey and interview samples, results showed that milk quality, nutrition improvement, emissions reduction, and environmental benefits attributed to the integrated PVWP system were the major factors considered by interviewees who showed intentions to purchase the crowdfunded dairy milk. Regression model results suggested that potential customers with higher income levels, and those of parenting age, and those with young children or planning to have children, had a higher willingness-to-pay than other customers for the crowdfunded sustainable dairy milk. The familiarity with and popularity of online shopping and pre-sale purchases in China made customers more open to and proactive towards pre-pay and crowdfunding mechanisms. This article evaluated key factors which may influence potential customers for crowdfunding, and used a discrete choice model to estimate customers’ willingness-to-pay for reward-based projects. These results could help producers of sustainable milk products to identify potential target groups in China and estimate market demand. This exploratory study could provide a framework with both quantitative and qualitative assessment of crowdfunding for renewable energy systems in a national or international context.

  • Dynamic simulation of CO2 capture from biomass power plant by MEA
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Energy Proceedings. - : Scanditale AB.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The bioenergy with CO2 capture and storage (BECCS) is a promising solution to cut CO2 emissions and will play an important role in achieving the climate goal of 1.5°C. As the properties of biomass varies significantly, it is of importance to understand the dynamic performance when capturing CO2 from biomass fired power plants. This work is to reveal the dynamic performance of chemical absorption. The aqueous solution of monoethanolamine (MEA) was selected as the solution. By using the real flue gas (FG) data, the influence of FG flow rate on CO2 capture were studied by doing dynamic simulations. It has been found that as the FG flow rate decreases, the CO2 capture rate first rose before going down; and the reboiler duty decreased while the energy consumption of CO2 capture increased.

  • Robust operation for minimizing power consumption of data centers with flexible substation integration
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Energy. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0360-5442 .- 1873-6785. ; 248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rapid development of digital economy has led to a dramatic increasement of internet data centers (IDCs), which consume a large amount of electricity. The diverse data-processing demands, high power consumption and workload uncertainty put forward a high requirement for the economical and secure operation of IDCs. As information technology (IT) devices are driven by direct current (DC), flexible substation (FS) has been gradually utilized to provide DC power for IDCs. This paper proposes robust operation strategies for minimizing IDC power consumption with FS integration. First, the linearized IDC power consumption model based on the technology of dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) is proposed to describe the operating state of IT devices. Then, considering the FS-based coordinated operation of IDC, photovoltaic (PV) station and energy storage system (ESS), the deterministic power consumption minimization model of IDCs is established. Considering the workload uncertainty, the operation strategies based on distributionally robust optimization (DRO) for IDCs are further proposed. Finally, the effectiveness of proposed method is validated on a modified practical network with IDCs integrated. Results show that through the dispatch of workload and power flow regulation of FS, the power consumption and dropping workload of IDCs are effectively reduced.

  • Study on Environmental and Economic Benefits of Photovoltaic integration with Iron and Steel Plants in Hebei Province
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Energy Proceedings. - : Scanditale AB.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Under the strategic goal of "peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality" in China, industries with high energy consumption and high pollution, such as iron and steel plants, are facing great pressure of energy conservation and emission reduction, and are in urgent need of green and low-carbon transformation. In this paper, 46 iron and steel plants in Hebei province are taken as examples. GIS spatial analysis and environmental emission list method are used to build a comprehensive evaluation model of rooftop photovoltaic, and to calculate the technical potential, energy saving and emission reduction benefits and economic feasibility of deploying rooftop photovoltaic in iron and steel plants. Finally, carbon trading mechanism is introduced to analyze its impact on the carbon trading market. It is found that 46 iron and steel plants save 216,700 tons of standard coal, reduce 144,700 tons of CO2 emissions and reduce 1,500 tons of SO2, NOX, PM and other air pollutants every year. The economic benefit of power generation self-use mode is greater than that of grid-fed mode, with an average return on investment of 140% and a payback period of 5.5 years. The results verify that rooftop photovoltaic in iron and steel plants has dual benefits of energy saving and emission reduction and economy, and this data can provide a feasible path for iron and steel plants to use photovoltaic for green and low-carbon transformation.

  • The effect of changing PCM distribution on thermal performance of latent heat storage
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Energy Proceedings. - : Scanditale AB.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In previous studies on thermal performance of solid-liquid phase change thermal energy storage (TES), it could be found that the lower phase change material (PCM) of TES was difficult to melt due to the influence of natural convection. Therefore, many scholars improved the overall thermal performance by enhancing the heat transfer in the lower region, increasing the distribution of the lower fins, increasing the length of the lower fins, or changing the porosity of the lower metal foam to improve the lower heat transfer. However, it had not been found that by changing the ratio of the upper and lower PCM to improve the heat storage performance. Therefore, this paper designed ten cases to study the effect of different ratios of the upper and lower PCM on the heat storage performance and finally found that the case 2 performed best, and the full melting time is 17240 s, reduced 39.05% compared with 28290 s of case 6.

  • Zero-energy snow removal system for track switch based on air forced field
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Energy Proceedings. - : Scanditale AB.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the rapid development of railway traffic in China's alpine regions, real-time self-powered snow removal is an important route for cleaning track switch, which currently still use manual sweeping or electrical heating. These two traditional snow removal methods require large amounts of manpower or electricity. Here we propose a zero-energy snow clearing device that can continuously remove snow for switch only by track vibration. This device mainly contains a motion conversion mechanism and an air compression component. The motion conversion mechanism can amplify the micro-vibration of the rail and act as a mechanical engine (ME) that drives the air compression component to generate high-pressure air to blow off the snow at the track switch. A prototype was manufactured to demonstrate the feasibility of the design. From the high-pressure air generated by rail vibration to the process of snow removal, it is a nature cycle of no external energy consumption.
