  • The Effect of Grain Size on theSusceptibility Towards Strain Age Crackingof Wrought Haynes® 282®
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: SPS 2020. - Amsterdam : IOS Press. - 9781643681467 - 9781643681474 ; 13, s. 407-416
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The effect of grain size on the suceptibility towards strain age cracking (SAC) has been investigated for Haynes® 282® in the tempeature range of 750 to 950°C after isothermal exposure up to 1800s. Grain growth was induced by heattreating the material at 1150°C for 2h, resulting in a fourfold increase in grain size. Hardness was significanlty reduced after heat treatment as compared to millannealed material. Large grain size resulted in intergranular fracture over a widertemperature range than small grain size material. Ductility was lowest at 850°C, while lower values were observed to be correlated to increased grain size. The rapid formation of grain boundary carbide networks in Haynes® 282® is found to be notable to compensate for higher local stresses on grain boundaries due to incresedgrain size.

  • Investigation of Homogenization and its Influence on the Repair Welding of Cast Allvac 718Plus
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of The 7th International Symposium on Superalloy 718 and Derivatives, TMS (The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society). - Hoboken, NJ, USA : John Wiley & Sons, Inc.. - 9781617827709 ; , s. 439-454, s. 439-454
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heat treatment experiments have been carried out to bring understanding to the efficacy of different temperatures and dwell times on the degree of homogenization of the cast Allvac 718Plus alloy which is prone to segregation mainly due to its high content of niobium. The effect of homogenization on weld repair was also examined. The homogenization heat treatment temperatures ranged from 1050°C to 1200°C with 1hr, 5 hrs and 10 hrs dwell times. The degree of homogenization was measured as the reduction of the amount of Laves phase by manual point counting in an optical microscope at high magnification. Longer range, interdendritic, patterns were established through line scan EDS analysis in SEM. It was found that short time (1hr) does not significantly reduce the amount of Laves phase whereas 5 hrs and 10hrs are much more efficient. Interdendritic homogenization does not occur to any measurable extent even at the highest temperature and longest dwell time (1200°C-10hrs) which was also reflected in bulk macro Vickers hardness tests. In the weld repair tests, one of the most homogenized material conditions (1125°C-5hrs +1200°C-10hrs) turned out to be the most prone to cracking while the number of weld cracks after a moderate homogenization heat treatment (1125°C-5hrs) was much smaller .

  • Metallurgical Response of Electron Beam Welded Allvac® 718Plus™
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Hot Cracking Phenomena in Welds III. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642168635 ; , s. 415-428, s. 415-428
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electron beam welding of forged Allvac 718Plus superalloy has been carried out without any visible cracks in weld cross-sections. Healed cracks in the heat affected zone were, however, seen in most cross-sections with the healing as well as the cracking believed to be due to the constitutional liquation of the δ-phase. The δ-phase undergoes constitutional liquation in the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) and consequently decreases the ductility of the material and renders cracks in the HAZ but due to the large amount of eutectic liquid produced at the same time the healing of the opened cracks takes place.

  • A numerical model for simulating the effect of strain rate on eutectic band thickness
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Welding in the World. - : Springer. - 0043-2288 .- 1878-6669. ; 64:10, s. 1635-1658
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Large tensile strains acting on the solidifying weld metal can cause the formation of eutectic bands along grain boundaries. These eutectic bands can lead to severe liquation in the partially melted zone of a subsequent overlapping weld. This can increase the risk of heat-affected zone liquation cracking. In this paper, we present a solidification model for modeling eutectic bands. The model is based on solute convection in grain boundary liquid films induced by tensile strains. The proposed model was used to study the influence of strain rate on the thickness of eutectic bands in Alloy 718. It was found that when the magnitude of the strain rate is 10 times larger than that of the solidification rate, the calculated eutectic band thickness is about 200 to 500% larger (depending on the solidification rate) as compared to when the strain rate is zero. In the paper, we also discuss how eutectic bands may form from hot cracks.

  • Modeling and simulation of weld solidification cracking part I : A pore-based crack criterion
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Welding in the World. - : Springer. - 0043-2288 .- 1878-6669. ; 63:5, s. 1489-1502
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several advanced alloy systems are susceptible to weld solidification cracking. One example is nickel-based superalloys, which are commonly used in critical applications such as aerospace engines and nuclear power plants. Weld solidification cracking is often expensive to repair and, if not repaired, can lead to catastrophic failure. This study, presented in three papers, presents an approach for simulating weld solidification cracking applicable to large-scale components. The results from finite element simulation of welding are post-processed and combined with models of metallurgy, as well as the behavior of the liquid film between the grain boundaries, in order to estimate the risk of crack initiation. The first paper in this study describes the crack criterion for crack initiation in a grain boundary liquid film. The second paper describes the model for computing the pressure and the thickness of the grain boundary liquid film, which are required to evaluate the crack criterion in paper 1. The third and final paper describes the application of the model to Varestraint tests of alloy 718. The derived model can fairly well predict crack locations, crack orientations, and crack widths for the Varestraint tests. The importance of liquid permeability and strain localization for the predicted crack susceptibility in Varestraint tests is shown.
