    • The invention relates to a method and apparatus for storing heat in a heat-of-fusion storage medium, e.g. a salt hydrate, and the heat exchange and mixing in conjunction with the taking of heat from the storage medium. In a closed system including a vapor chamber (5) and a chamber for a solid/liquid phase, the storage medium (2, 4) is brought into direct contact with a substance, i.e., a heat transfer medium (3) having the capacity of taking up heat from the storage medium by being vaporized. The vapor travels to the vapor chamber (5), and when heat is removed from the vapor, the vapor is caused to condense and the condensate returns to the storage medium. The substance has insignificant solubility in the storage medium and a density which is higher, or equal to the density of the storage medium in its liquid phase. Suitable combinations of storage medium and substance include calcium chloride hexahydrate and trifluorotrichloroethane or Clauber's salt and octafluorocyclobutane.

En lösning av alkalimetall (M) silikat med ett molförhållande SiO2/M2O om 0.5 - 100 framställs. Lösningarna blandas och blandningen omrörs, och ett koagel tillåts bildas. Koaglet uppsamlas och behandlas för att tillhandahålla ett material som har en torrsubstans om >15, företrädesvis >97%. Ett material som kan erhållas med processen tillhandahålles också.

    • NOVELTY - Pretreating non-wood lignocellulosic material containing less than 5 wt.% starch or sugar for producing ethanol from lignocellulose, comprises: (a) adding organic acid or organic acid-producing bacteria to the lignocellulosic material; (b) storing the lignocellulosic material in presence of organic acid for at least 2 weeks in an atmosphere of less than 5% oxygen to obtain organic acid-impregnated material; and (c) heating the organic acid-impregnated material at a temperature of at least 190 degrees C for at least 5 minutes to obtain pretreated lignocellulosic material. USE - The method is useful for pretreating non-wood lignocellulosic material to produce ethanol, where the non-wood lignocellulosic material is bagasse (preferably sugar cane bagasse or sweet Sorghum bagasse), sugar cane trash, wheat straw, rice straw, Sorghum species, Arundo, Miscanthus or agricultural residues (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The method: avoids the need of inorganic acid or base (sulfur dioxide), and utilizes containers which are less corrosion resistant, hence economical; has higher net energy gain; utilizes organic acid which is biodegradable, and produces degradation products (e.g. 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and furfural which acts as inhibitory substances in the subsequent fermentation process), thus environmentally friendly. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Pretreating non-wood lignocellulosic material containing less than 5 wt.% starch or sugar for producing ethanol from lignocellulose, comprises: (a) adding organic acid or organic acid-producing bacteria to the lignocellulosic material; (b) storing the lignocellulosic material in the presence of organic acid for at least 2 weeks in an atmosphere of less than 5% oxygen to obtain organic acid-impregnated material; and (c) heating the organic acid-impregnated material at a temperature of at least 190 degrees C for a period of at least 5 minutes to obtain pretreated lignocellulosic material, where no inorganic acid or base including sulfur dioxide is added in the method.

The height of the waveguide is less than the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave. The waveguide is supported on the substrate by a support structure extending from the substrate to the waveguide, along the length direction of the waveguide, having a width which is smaller than the width of the waveguide. The invention further relates to a method of detecting a component in gas and a method of fabricating a sensor device.

    • An apparatus (1 0) for generating muons, comprising: a hydrogen accumulator (13) including an inlet (35); an outlet (37) separated from the inlet by a flow path; a hydrogen transfer catalyst (31) arranged along the flow path between the inlet and the outlet; and an accumulating member (19) for receiving hydrogen in ultra-dense state from the outlet at a receiving portion (39) of the accumulating member and accumulating the hydrogen in the ultradense state at an accumulation portion (41) of the accumulating member. The accumulating member (19) has a downward sloping surface (27) from the receiving portion (39) to the accumulation portion (41 ). The apparatus further includes a field source (15), such as a laser, arranged to provide, to the accumulation portion (41) of the accumulating member (19), a field adapted to stimulate emission of negative muons from hydrogen in the ultra-dense state. The apparatus (10) further includes a specially designed barrier (21) and a shield (23) to retain the super-fluid ultra-dense hydrogen from creeping away from the accumulation portion of the generator.
