  • Microplastics from tyre and road wear: a literature review
  • 2020
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This literature review concerns microplastics from tyre and road wear caused by road traffic. As there is limited knowledge about microplastics in general, and microplastics from road traffic in particular, the Swedish Government commissioned the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) to, during 2018-2020, develop and disseminate knowledge about microplastics from road traffic. The chapters in this report summarises existing knowledge about microplastics from road traffic with respect to the following aspects: sources, spread and presence; effects on and risk to the environment and human health; characteristics and chemical composition; tyre and road wear; sampling methods; analysis and sample preparation; and measures. The report also includes a chapter with overall conclusions, and a chapter about further research, development and investigation needs. The purpose of this report is to provide a basis for reducing the generation and spread of microplastics from road traffic. One aim of the report is to collate and disseminate knowledge about microplastics generated by tyre and road wear, and to review the current level of knowledge. A second aim is to identify knowledge gaps and research requirements in relation to microplastics from road traffic. This literature review is based on a review of scientific articles and reports, as well as technical literature and some information from experts and industry.

  • Fundamentals of NH3-SCR and SOx chemistry over copper zeolite for the control of NOx and greenhouse gas (N2O) emissions
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The release of N2O over Cu-zeolite was investigated due to the critical contribution it makes to the atmosphere as one of the greenhouse gases (GHGs). An exhaust after-treatment system (EATS) for heavy-duty vehicles that uses Cu/SSZ-13 as the selective catalyst reduction (SCR) catalyst experiences not only a variety of flow, temperature and chemical conditions but is also exposed to various resulting contaminants. Among these, sulfur has been the focus of studies due to its critical deactivation of DeNOx performance, even at low concentration levels. Adsorption/desorption of sulfur species over Cu/SSZ-13 is connected closely to the lifetime of the SCR catalyst. The task of unravelling the synergistic effect of sulfur has on the formation of N2O during the NH3-SCR of NOx, while also reflecting realistic application conditions, is challenging. The ambition here is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the formation of N2O in the presence of sulfur species during the NH3-SCR of NOx at low temperature for NOx emissions control. Model catalysts were prepared to investigate a variety of copper species and ammonium nitrate (AN) within the CHA cage. It was found that the CHA structure promotes surface nitrate species in NO2-rich conditions, and an environment with strong polarity within the CHA cage was proposed as a feasible reason for the largest formation of ammonium nitrate compared to the MFI and BEA structures with medium and large pore/cage sizes. In addition, zeolite acidity was more a viable reason as to why ammonium nitrate is thermally stable in Cu/CHA compared to Cu/MFI and Cu/BEA than the pore-confinement effect, which has been used to explain the thermal stability of AN over Cu/zeolites. The IR signature of the ammonium nitrate was also obtained; it is believed that ammonium nitrate exists mainly by interacting with copper ions to form copper-ammonium nitrate within the CHA cage. Copper species and the adsorption of sulfur oxides (SO2/SO3) were investigated and their synergistic effects on the formation of N2O assessed. The SO3-poisoning effect was highlighted which, from an experimental aspect, is very challenging. We found two different states of sulfur species. SO2 and SO3 interaction with copper-monomers (Z1CuOH and Z2Cu) and copper-dimer (Z2Cu2O2) are possible. Sulfated Cu-dimer is lower in energy compared to its copper-monomers counterparts. SO3 interacts with both Z1CuOH and Z2Cu but SO2 mainly interacts with Z1CuOH. SO3-poisoning only causes (bi)sulfate (Z1HSO4), whereas SO2-poisoning can cause both (bi)sulfite (Z1HSO3) and (bi)sulfate (Z1HSO4). Taken together, out results well demonstrates why the SO3 exposure results in more critical chemical poisoning (irreversible deactivation) compared to the SO2 exposure to Cu/CHA. Finally, synergistical effect of sulfur, copper, and Brønsted sites were found for N2O formation under NO2-rich condition. Consequently, we found that sulfur promotes N2O intermediate formation but increasing Brønsted site density increases N2 selectivity, thereby, reducing N2O formation from Cu/CHA.

  • Challenges in nano-structured fluid flows for assembly into hierarchical biomaterials
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - 0094-243X .- 1551-7616. - 9780735445475 ; 2997
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hierarchical biomaterials have their place in the context of developing novel material systems particularly in the framework of sustainability. The key to their development is in controlling their assembly into hierarchical orders at various lengthscales. Thus, flow can be an asset in e.g. controlling orientation, however, resolving the hierarchical orientation dynamics of such systems remains a challenge. We focus here mainly on cellulose nanocrystals water-based suspensions, however, the outline is representative of numerous nanostructured fluids.

  • Fate of lead, copper, zinc and antimony during chemical looping gasification of automotive shredder residue
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Fuel. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-2361 .- 1873-7153. ; 302
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gasification experiments in this study were performed in a 2–4 MW indirect gasifier coupled to a semi-commercial CFB combustor at Chalmers University of Technology. Experiments were carried out during 13 days with automotive shredder residue (ASR), giving a unique opportunity to investigate the bed material under realistic conditions and with long residence times. The metal rich ash was accumulated in the bed, gaining some oxygen carrying capabilities, creating a chemical looping gasification (CLG) process. This study aims to expand the knowledge about the chemistry of zinc, copper, lead and antimony during CLG of ASR. Several experimental methods have been utilized, such as XRD, SEM-EDX and XPS along with detailed thermodynamic calculations to study chemical transformations that can occur in the system. Thermodynamic calculations showed that the reduction potential affect the phase distribution of these elements, where highly reduction conditions result in heavy metals dissolving in the slag phase. Copper and zinc ferrites, lead silicates and antimony oxides were identified at the particle surfaces in the bottom ash. The formation of an iron rich ash layer plays an important role, especially for copper and zinc speciation. The main pathways in the complex CLG system have been discussed in detail.

  • VCSEL Equivalent Circuits and Silicon Photonics Integration
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) is a light source of great importance for numerous industrial and consumer products. The main application areas are datacom and sensing. The datacom industry uses GaAs-based VCSELs for optical interconnects, the short-reach fiber optical communication links used to transfer large amounts of data at high rates between units within data centers and supercomputers. In the area of sensing, VCSELs are largely used in consumer products such as smart phones (e.g. face ID and camera auto focus), computer mice, and automobiles (e.g. gesture recognition and LIDAR for autonomous driving). In this work, an advanced physics-based equivalent circuit model for datacom VCSELs has been developed. The model lends itself to co-design and co-optimization with driver and receiver ICs, thereby enabling higher data rate transceivers with bandwidth limited VCSELs and photodiodes. The model also facilitates an understanding of how each physical process within the VCSEL affects the VCSEL static and dynamic performance. It has been applied to study the impact of carrier transport and capture on VCSEL dynamics. The work also includes micro-transfer-printing of GaAs-based single-mode VCSELs on silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Such PICs are increasingly used for e.g. compact and highly functional bio-photonic sensors. Transfer printing of VCSELs enables the much-needed on-PIC integration of power efficient light sources. The bottom-emitting VCSELs are printed above grating couplers on the PIC and optical feedback is used to control the polarization for efficient coupling to the silicon nitride waveguide. Wavelength tuning, as required by the bio-sensing application, is achieved by direct current modulation.

  • Selective kinetic growth and role of local coordination in forming Al2TiO5-based coatings at lower temperatures
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Materials Advances. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2633-5409. ; 2:17, s. 5737-5751
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Negative thermal expansion is an elusive property found among certain materials, whose potential applications have remained limited due to the many challenges faced in their synthesis. Herein, we report the successful formation of aluminium titanate-based coatings (Al2TiO5), a material renowned for its low-to-negative thermal expansion, by the co-deposition of aluminium-isopropoxide and titanium-isopropoxide in a hot-wall chemical vapour deposition instrument. While coatings grown at 450 °C were amorphous as-deposited, a short-range order into the Al2TiO5-phase was found and analysed by using Raman spectroscopy. Upon subsequent annealing at 700 °C for 3 hours, crystalline coatings were achieved without forming any binary phases. The selective synthesis of the Al2TiO5 phase is ascribed to the precursors’ inherent chemical similarities, resulting in a kinetic targeting of this phase and a short-range homogeneity, entailing its preferred crystallisation. The role of local coordination is expressed by demonstrating the formation of intergrowth phases ascribed to lower coordinating interstices in the compound. Both the formation and crystallisation temperatures reported herein, as well as the timescales needed for the synthesises, are considerably lower than any conventional adopted solid-state techniques used so far to attain the Al2TiO5 phase.

  • Additive-Driven Improvements in Interfacial Properties and Processing of TMP-Polymer Composites
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Efforts to address environmental concerns have resulted in new regulations designed to plan the reduction of plastic and synthetic polymer usage, necessitating the search for sustainable natural alternatives with comparable cost-effectiveness and mechanical performance. Thermomechanical pulp (TMP) fibres are one of the most affordable natural fibres that have no chemical refining in production, production have a high yield of 90-98% and TMP fibres have been demonstrated to improve the mechanical characteristics (strength, stiffness and toughness) of wood-polymer composites (WPCs) compared to the pure polymer. The integration of TMP fibres with non-polar synthetic polymers remains a challenge due to surface polarity differences. This PhD thesis aims to ease the processing of TMP fibre composites through the incorporation of additives. The hypothesis posits that incorporating magnesium stearate (MgSt), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) as additives in TMP composites will enhance interfacial properties, resulting in improved processability and flow behaviour at high temperatures. MoS2 is known for its interaction with lignin, which exists in TMP and MgSt is recognised for its ability to improve flow in pharmaceutical processing when combined with cellulose, also a component of TMP. AKD modifies the hydrophilic properties of lignocellulosic surfaces. The experimental work explores the effect of these additives on the properties of TMP composites of ethylene acrylic acid copolymer (EAA) and polypropylene (PP) matrices. The dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and mechanical analysis results reveal that MoS2 exhibits superior interaction with TMP fibres, yielding enhanced interfacial properties compared to MgSt in between EAA and TMP fibres. Rheological studies elucidate the transition from a fluid-like state to a network-like structure upon the incorporation of TMP into the PP matrix. The incorporation of AKD with C18 reduces the viscosity of TMP-PP composites and PP itself, and, as determined through theoretical Hansen solubility parameter (HSP) calculations, increases compatibility between cellulose in TMP fibres and PP. The addition of AKD influences both the colour (lighter) and shape (smoother surface) of the extrudate filaments in the TMP-PP composites, indicative of improved processing. In addition, frictional analysis demonstrates the reduction of the coefficient of friction (COF) between metal and TMP fibre by MgSt and AKD treatments.

  • Ulva fenestrata protein - Comparison of three extraction methods with respect to protein yield and protein quality
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Algal Research-Biomass Biofuels and Bioproducts. - : Elsevier BV. - 2211-9264. ; 60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Seaweed is gaining attention as a possible alternative and sustainable source of proteins. This study investigates three protein extraction methods and their effect on protein yield and quality when applied to Ulva fenestrata. Two of the methods included alkaline extractions (pH-shifts); one version solubilizing the proteins at pH 8.5 and one solubilizing them at pH 8.5 followed by pH 12 (pH 8.5 + 12). The third method was a mechanical pressing, using a double screw press. All extraction methods were followed by isoelectric precipitation to concentrate the proteins. Extraction at pH 8.5 gave the significantly highest total protein yield after the isoelectric precipitation, followed by extraction at pH 8.5 + 12 and lastly mechanical extraction gave the lowest yield. Proteins extracted with both alkaline methods had a significantly higher solubility at pH 7 and pH 9, compared to proteins from the mechanical pressing. There were no significant differences between the three methods in total D/L-amino acid ratio. Amino acid cross-links measured as lysinoalanine (LAL) and lanthionine (LAN) where found in significantly higher amounts in alkali-extracted proteins compared to mechanically extracted, however not to a degree that expect to compromise functional or nutritional quality. Further, no significant difference in protein in vitro digestibility was found between extraction methods. In conclusion, results indicated that protein extraction at pH 8.5 can be recommended, especially regarding total protein yield and solubility of the final protein extract.
