- Digital archives, a computer game on an old console, say, age differently than their analog counterparts, such as a board game in a box. While aging is apparent in hardware, boxes, the subject matter, cultural references, writing style, artistic design, technical limitations and so on, the game itself as displayed on the screen shows no signs of aging. In other words, digital archives bear the "marks of antiquity" but there is no "look of age". Whatever happens on screen appears as new as it ever did to prior users. No traces of previous use can be found. This has to do with how digital objects come together as a process. The question is: what consequences does the absence of 'look of age' have for historians working with digital archives? In what ways does it matter that signs of prior use cannot be located, i.e. that the history of the research artifacts themselves cannot be stored in the archive?
