- The HILAS (Human Integration into the Life cycle of Aviation Systems) project originates from the field of Human Factors. There is a great need for new change and innovation management in the airline industry, which in some ways has become globally very similar. One goal with HILAS is to develop a Human-oriented Operations Management and a framework of tools is under development to collect, integrate and analyse information from flight operations. The main objective of this paper is to make an initial analysis of how this framework may support the development and implementation of continuous improvements without compromising safety. Foregoing research within HILAS has included several field studies and work shops with airlines and interviews and questionnaires among the operators. Most design requirements derive from issues such as bridging the gap between management and the operators, for example to foster a good reporting culture and providing easily accessible tools to facilitate continuous improvement. A difficulty in applying continuous improvement into an airline is that with extensive regulations and safety issues operators may not be allowed to act autonomously with improvements. It is concluded that HILAS framework at this stage in many ways may support development of abilities and behaviours for continuous improvements.
