- In the field of language teaching, the skill of listening is often seen as the most neglected of the four macro language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing. Yet it is fundamentally important for language development, both in the early stages when learners are beginning to acquire the language, and in later stages, when they must develop sophisticated abilities for fluent communication, especially in globalised contexts. In this chapter we position listening within the broader skills of communication, and provide an overview of recent theoretical and practical developments. We highlight key areas for a ‘pragmatic informed approach’ to listening and consider how this field of research, teaching and learning might develop.
