- In the early 20th century, many traditional dances fell out of use in Sweden. Today's folk dancing is to a great extent a revived tradition, and the result of enthusiasts documenting and reconstructing old dances. The processes leading to a revived dance tradition are complex and have had a great impact on how the dances are performed and embodied today. Nowadays, folk dancing in Sweden is in many ways an urban phenomenon, but with roots in the countryside. A number of local dance variants have gained national spread, in part turning into archetypes. Despite an emphasis on geographical differences, traditional dance and music constitute one national subculture rather than several regional ones.
