Hot- or Wet Slaked Lime Mortar? - Restoration of the Façades of Läckö Castle

• Hot lime mortar is currently experiencing a renaissance and is a hot topic among building conservation practitioners. Hot mixes have been used in the past in historic structures. The repair and replastering of the façades of Läckö Castle (2002-2009) is an example of hot lime mortar being used in conservation practice. The objective of the Läckö project was to develop a repair mortar, technically compatible with those used in the original structure. The presumption was that lime slaked with sand, hot lime, would enable reproduce the qualities of the original lime-rich mortars. The gradual transition from wet- to hot lime mortar for plastering was motivated by advantages such as working properties on site, mortar structure and physical properties of the hardened plaster, and the time saved during mortar production, from slaking to finished plaster on the wall. Combined research and building site practice (masonry repair and plastering) are presented, with the emphasis on a comparison between hot-lime and conventional lime-putty mortar.
