- Background: Woman-centered care is a main target in childbirth care, requiring high quality in midwives professional support. Continuous support to women during childbirth has positive effects on birth outcomes such as increased vaginal births and enhanced satisfaction with birth experience. However, research is needed on the substance of care particularly in the Swedish labor ward settings where midwives often care for more than one woman. This study is part of a research project with the purpose to evaluate and assess a model of woman-centered care provided by midwives for childbearing women in Swedish and Icelandic settings. Purpose/Objective: To explore the meaning and content of midwives´ care of women during childbirth. Method: A study with an ethnographic approach focusing the meaning and content of midwives´ care for women during childbirth. Data was collected in January and February 2015 by one researcher through field studies at one labor ward in Sweden for women with expected normal childbirth. The data contained field notes from participant observations of six midwives during their day and night shifts, three recorded and verbatim transcribed interviews with midwives, and the researcher’s reflection notes. The data analysis is ongoing and will be completed during spring 2016. Key Findings: Key findings from the study will be presented at the conference. Discussion: The study will add new relevant knowledge on the meaning and content of midwives care in Swedish labor wards where midwives often care for several women during one shift. The study findings will be discussed in relation to midwives professional support.
