    • This doctoral disseration examines the legend of the invisible city of Kitezh, its development and the role that it played in Russian culture between the years 1843 and 1940. It was during this period that the original folk legend was discovered by the Russian intelligentsia and transformed into a new myth about Russia. The legend is widely known and is the subject of a large number of publications and scholarly works. However, no research had yet been undertaken that presents a holistic account, which is what this dissertation attempts to do.

  • “MY DEAR, CLOSE AND DISTANT FRIEND”: Nina Berberova’s Letters to Sergej Rittenberg (1947–1975)

    • Nina Berberova (1901–1993) almost appears to have lived several lives. First, she was a young writer in the revolutionary Russia. Then she witnessed the hectic 1920s in Berlin and achieved her literary breakthrough in interwar Paris with psychologically finely-honed novels and short stories set in the Russian émigré community. Finally, she went on in the latter half of the century to a career as a Slavist in the United States. She had her eyes on Russia the whole time. As an academic she studied the cracks in the ideological wall and seems early on to have foreseen her return to her homeland. At last, as she approached the age of ninety, she had vanquished the Soviet Union and could go back in triumph in the “revolutionary” year of 1989. In addition to everything else Berberova was an avid letter writer who maintained a great many correspondences. For nearly thirty years she was friends with her Russian – and Petersburgian –countryman Sergej Rittenberg (1899–1975) in Stockholm, to whom she sent more than 150 letters and postcards between 1947 and 1975. A reflection of her thoughts and reading interests, they also provide a glimpse into the genesis of her huge memoir The Italics Are Mine (Kursiv moj). This volume presents Berberova’s letters with an introduction and extensive commentaries by Professor Magnus Ljunggren.

  • In Search of a Predecessor to a Ruthenian Tetraevangel

    • A Church Slavonic tetraevangel, Evangelium Cyrillicum Gothoburgense, henceforth ECG, of the very end of the 16th c. from Rybotycze near Przemyśl on the northern slopes of the Carpathians, showed textual and orthographic features differing from the nearly contemporary Ostrog Bible of 1581, as well as saints, unusual in the Eastern Orthodox Menologion. In search of a predecessor to ECG, a hypothesis suggested that it could be found south of the Carpathians where an Orthodox enclave, surrounded by Islamic, Roman Catholic, Reformation and Counterreformation movements had been formed in the 15th and 16th cc. The area, here called Circumcarpathian lands, had received many Orthodox priests and monks from the Balkans who brought with them their scribal tradition. For a collation with tetras from the Circumcarpathian lands in libraries in Poland, Ukraina and Bulgaria, 19+5 differing readings in 95 MSS, orthographic features as the use of the big jus initially in 71 MSS, the vowel o in instead of the back vowel jer medially in weak position 43 MSS, the difference in marking the numeral 90, koppa in South Slavonic, and cherv´ in East Slavonic versions, and the occurrence of Serbian and Athonian saints in the Menologion was observed in 81 MSS. Most textual agreements, 10 of 19, were found in only two MSS, while a majority of the MSS, 38 per cent, agreed in five of the 19 readings. The big jus initially was kept in 20 per cent, the little jus was more frequent, in 32 per cent. The vowel o medially instead of back jer in weak position as in ECG was recorded in 16 per cent. The South Slavonic koppa for the numeral 90 was used in 81 per cent. The majority of the tetras, 62 percent, have five of the seven saints: Onuphrios the Hermit, Peter of Mt Athos, Athanasios the Athonite, Sabas, First Archbishop of Serbia, and Simeon the Serbian, The co-variation of all five variables, the differing readings, the three orthographic variations and the occurrence of the saints did not show any close relationship, but when only the readings and the saints were studied, 27 of 81 tetras, 33 per cent, had the five agreeing readings, and the five of saints in common. Although a master copy of ECG could not be localised, the findings show that ECG is related to the features which have been proposed as the Circum-carpathian scribal tradition.
