The use and importance of external sources of knowledge in the software development process

- Partnerships and external knowledge acquisition have become important means for gaining access to the increasing number of technologies needed for the development of more advanced products especially in emerging and dynamic industries. A good example is the fast expanding computer software industry where linkages are many and important. This is an empirical study of linkages and their relative importance in different stages of the software development process. The amount of new knowledge generated though different sources and differences between different types of software, such as packaged and customised software, are analysed. The analysis draws on case studies of 92 mostly European software projects, and a pilot study of four projects. It shows the length, type, and relative importance of 718 linkages in the software development process. The data collected shows that there are important differences between tangible hardware and software projects when it comes to the importance of the various linkages and the knowledge acquired.

Omställningskompetens i detaljhandeln - Företagens erfarenheter av uppsägningar

- Denna studies övergripande syfte är att bidra med ökad kunskap om konsekvenserna av strukturomvandling inom detaljhandeln, när det gäller uppsägningar och omställningsar-bete. Rapporten återger resultaten av en första delstudie som beskriver och analyserar varför och hur företag i detaljhandeln genomför uppsägningar. För att undersöka omställningsarbetet har vi genomfört intervjuer i ett urval av 15 företag inom detaljhandeln som genomgått förändringar och sagt upp personal. Resultaten av analysen beskrivs i tre olika grupper beroende på företagens storlek. Studien visar att ju större företag och ju mer komplex organisation, desto mer utförlig och komplicerad motivering gavs till upp-sägningarna. Med ökad storlek kom ökad specialisering av omställningsarbetet inom företagen och även ökad distans till konsekvenserna för de enskilda anställda.

Metoder för att utvärdera investeringar i telekommunikationsnät - Förstudie

- The aim of this study is to give an overview of new principals for priorities between different investment alternatives in a telecommunication network. The results includes a description of how uncertainty in investment, maintenance and utilization costs in different parts of a telecommunication network can be treated. The report provides an analysis of how this cost are dependent on each other and a presentation of methods and models available to make priorities between different investment alternatives. This models are illustrated in a case study. Finally, we are describe situations where socioeconomic and enterprise-economic considerations leads to different results. Two of them are of special interest - the cases of monopoly and integration, that is "economies-of-scale" and "economies-of-scope". On monopolistic markets investment alternatives are often profitable from a socio-economic perspective and unprofitable from an enterprise perspective. In such situations, it is important to measuring profitability from both perspectives.
