  • Volymutbyte vid tillverkning av kvistfria snickeriämnen och skivor med stående årsringar
  • 2005
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • On the identification and utilisation of relevant data for applying cost-effective maintenance
  • 2005
  • Licentiate thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • With the global and continuously changing environment of today's companies, competitive strategies of cost minimisation and differentiation, and the ability to use the available resources in a cost-effective way have become important. The major focus should be set on the areas of business where the possibilities for strategic advantages and savings are high, whereas maintenance is one area of business that recently has been considered as an activity contributing efficiently to the companies' strategic objectives of profitability and competitiveness. To be able to effectively support the role of maintenance as a profit contributor and to communicate the strategic importance of maintenance to other areas within the companies, modern tools are needed in form of IT systems that provide the users with relevant data and decision support. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the history and current state of maintenance management IT support and to give suggestions of how IT for supporting the maintenance decision making process could be enhanced in the future. Two research questions are addressed: Do cur-rent maintenance management IT systems provide the basis for supporting the strategic decision making process at all levels of maintenance management? and In what way can IT systems used for maintenance purposes be improved in order to strengthen the role of maintenance as a profit generating activity? By literature surveys, case studies and artefact building, the author defines the state-of-the-art of maintenance management IT used in Swedish industry and suggests improvements for utilising IT for reaching cost-effective maintenance in form of database models and computerised decision support. The main results are 1) a model for identification of relevant data need for maintenance problem tracing and localisation and maintenance decision making, 2) a database model showing minimum relevant data need for maintenance decision making and 3) a conceptual maintenance decision support model that is based upon a holistic view on maintenance with regard to other business activities and translates tech-nical impact into financial terms. The thesis concludes that current maintenance management IT systems provide low support for strategic maintenance manage-ment. A small and flexible database integrating relevant data from different rele-vant working areas would enable the strategic maintenance decision making and by including functionality in maintenance management IT for positioning main-tenance with respect to companies’ overall business goals, the strategic impact of maintenance could be shown.

  • Högre värdeutbyte genom våt- och torrlimning av sågade sidobrädor till egenskapsoptimerade träprodukter för byggmarknaden
  • 2009
  • Reports (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract
    • The purpose of this project was to investigate the possibilities to manufacture wet-glued laminated beams for load bearing applications from Norway spruce side board lamellae and by that achieve products that are difficult to obtain from the centre yield of a log and also contribute to increased profitability in the sawmill industry.   Properties such as shape stability, strength and stiffness of wet glued beams with crosssectional dimensions 50×300 mm2 and lengths 4850 and 5200 mm were analysed and compared with corresponding dry glued products. The results obtained are very promising. espite the fact that the beams were produced from a batch of unsorted boards, the performed tests showed that the product has the necessary qualities to be competitive in relation to both glued laminated timber of grade L40 and structural strength graded timber of grade C35. Requirements concerning limitations for geometrical characteristics as expressed in a proposal for a new harmonised glulam standard are also met.   The bond line of the wet glued beams was analysed regarding mechanical properties such as fracture energy, local strength and wood failure percentage after cyclic boiling and drying treatments. The results showed that the bonds are able to comply with requirements concerning bond lines to be used in indoor as well as outdoor constructions for structural pplications.   To be able to improve the quality of boards for use as lamellae in wet glued beams, a method for scanning the slope of grain and disturbance of grain on board surfaces was also further developed and implemented.

  • Introduction to thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) wood processing
  • 2007
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Wood is the ultimate renewable material. It possesses qualities that have made it a material of choice for millennia, these qualities further enhanced by its recognised carbon sequestration. However, as a biological material it suffers the same fate as any natural material, namely degradation. There are ways in which wood can be enhanced, including eco-friendly methods. One of the emerging eco-friendly methods is the combined use of temperature, moisture and mechanical action – so-called Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical (THM) treatments.THM processing can improve the intrinsic properties of wood, to produce new materials and to acquire a form and functionality desired by engineers without changing its eco-friendly characteristics. There are numerous THM processing techniques and the number of these processes is growing continuously.THM processing can be divided into two major categories; Thermo-Hydral treatments (TH) and Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical treatments (THM). TH is usually used to enhance wood properties, and is of importance in increasing stress relaxation during drying under high temperature, in the formation of wood-based composites or veneer products and in the artificial ageing of wood. THM on the other hand, is employed in the producing of new materials by densification, shaping by moulding, welding of wood by friction, embossment, bending of wood, wood fusion, and chip-less manufacturing. During THM treatment, wood undergoes large deformation, stress relaxation and chemical degradation, but with strong shape memory depending on parameters like temperature, moisture content, applied forces, processing time and the type of wood. Several TH and THM processes have recently been developed in Europe, Japan, the USA and Canada, but only some of them have been scaled-up industrially. However, to overcome the problems associated with TH/THM wood during processing at the laboratory scale, during scale up and controlling the end use properties, a detailed knowledge of these phenomena becomes important. This requires a close collaboration between experts in wood chemistry, wood mechanics and material science from both academia and from industry. With this report we would like to give a brief state-of-the-art of the important field of THM-processing. The aim of this work has not been to cover the complete field of THM-processing, just give an introduction.

  • Customer Value Strategy and Customer Value Management for Competitive Wood-Flooring Manufacturers : Litterature review
  • 2005
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This literature study describes the potential contributions of Customer Value Strategy and Customer Value Management if they are implemented in wood floor manufacturing, as the "new" approach towards competitiveness. The growing market for wood floor products is creating an opportunity for the industries in this sector to make economic value of their offerings. The customers of flooring products often have a prejudice that wood-flooring materials are costly compared to other types of flooring material. This is apparently caused by a high recurring cost during the use of the product that makes the life cycle cost (LCC) of wood floor is amongst the highest, despite the lower initial cost of the product. In the other hand, the customers are not always sensitive to the price if they are aware about the benefits they get exceed their sacrifices. This is the main reason that the wood floor manufacturer should focus on customer value rather than barely on product price. The cost would still be important consideration, but the perspective needs to be extended to include costs during the life cycle of the product (or the period of ownership).Improving the benefits and reducing the sacrifices are the core idea of Customer Value Strategy and Customer Value Management. These concepts require an understanding of what the customer value and would value as well as excellent performance on product, process, and production. A proper implementation of Customer Value Strategy and Customer Value Management would strengthen manufacturing competitiveness.
