  • Attitudes of Different Professionals Toward the Well-being of Older Adults Living at Home
  • 2010
  • In: Journal of Allied Health. - 0090-7421 .- 1945-404X. ; 39:4, s. 293-300
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Objectives: Negative attitudes in society toward working in eldercare constitute a challenge to educators and care providers. The purpose of this study was to explore, describe, and compare the attitudes of different professional groups toward factors that are important for the well-being of older adults. Methods: A randomized sample of 210 respondents that included registered nurses (RNs), registered occupational therapists (OTRs), personal benefit advisors (PBAs), and home help assistants (HHAs) was collected from social service agencies in 10 Swedish municipalities. A scale was developed in a six-step process to measure attitudes toward factors influencing elder wellbeing, and the final 22-item Likert-type scale was called the “Staff Attitudes toward the Well-being of Older Adults” scale. Results: Thirty-three percent of staff responded with positive attitudes , and the remaining were uncertain or negative. The attitudes of RNs, OTRs, and PBAs were significantly more positive than those of HHAs. Discussion: The scale is practical for use in different professional groups with the aim of exploring existing attitudes, identifying areas with a low degree of prevailing positive attitudes and differences between groups, and evaluating whether attitudes change after staff training.

  • Private practice disability therapy workforce in rural New South Wales, Australia
  • 2016
  • In: Journal of Allied Health. - : Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions. - 0090-7421 .- 1945-404X. ; 45:3, s. 225-229
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Despite an increasing demand for therapy services, there is a shortage of therapists in rural areas. We describe the existing private therapy workforce in rural western New South Wales (NSW), Australia. A cross-sectional design study, using an online survey, was conducted with occupational and physiotherapists, speech pathologists, and psychologists working in private practice in western NSW. Forty-one private therapists completed the survey. The average years of qualification was 19; 51% worked part-time. Two-thirds (68%) indicated they had adequate access to professional development opportunities. Sixty-four percent reported intending to stay in their job for 12 months. Most (95%) reported high levels of job satisfaction. Respondents had worked in western NSW for a median of 17 yrs. Sixtyeight percent described opportunities for social interaction as very good. Sixty-six percent grew up in rural areas. All respondents agreed that they loved the rural lifestyle. The results portray an experienced, stable, flexible, and highly satisfied professional group. With the current changes in policies within the disability sector, it is important to maximise these features of private therapy in order to contribute to the rural workforce and increase access to the range of supports available for people with disability.

  • Care of the Elderly from an International and Multiprofessional Perspective : Web-based Learning
  • 2011
  • In: Journal of Allied Health. - 0090-7421 .- 1945-404X. ; 40:4, s. 206-211
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In the future, an increased number of the elderly with their vulnerability related to aging will demand more multidisciplinary and innovative approaches toward their care. A course called "Care of the Elderly from a European Perspective" has been developed in collaboration among several European universities with the aim of providing an opportunity for students to increase their mutual understanding of elder care. The course is based on phenomenographic research and collaborative learning as a pedagogical approach. Learning should be thought of as an active research and problem-solving process, to which interaction and dialogue are central. The technical learning environment is based on software and web conferences through which students and teachers can communicate one-to-one or as a group. By working together in international groups, students learn to analyze differences among countries: How do cultural, social, economic, and geographical circumstances affect the quality of life? They also learn to understand ways in which different health professionals can cooperate better in the care of the elderly.

  • Methodologic support in habilitation and rehabilitation: communicative action between practice and science
  • 2000
  • In: Journal of Allied Health. - 0090-7421. ; 29:4, s. 227-234
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study evaluated the early phase of development of a model for quality improvement of habilitation and rehabilitation project processes. The focus of the methodologic support in habilitation and rehabilitation model was on cooperation between practice contexts and science. Habermas' theory about communicative action was a theoretical frame of reference. Three project coordinators and ten project leaders were interviewed. The results revealed different attitudes towards methodologic support activities, demonstrating the importance of acknowledging cognitive and social functions, the process of legitimization, different approaches of practice versus science, and problems regarding information and communication. The model was shown to be important in bridging the gap between practice and science. To support reflective and emancipatory cognitive learning, more efforts to foster communicative action are called for, and more attention must be paid to the importance different missions and organizational structures have for the development of the dialog between practitioners and researchers.

  • Developing agentic learners for 21st century practice : A pedagogic approach in occupational therapy
  • 2016
  • In: Journal of Allied Health. - 0090-7421 .- 1945-404X. ; 45:1, s. 8-13a
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper, an approach to teaching occupational therapy students how to create orthoses, whilst at the same time developing higher-order critical thinking, reflective, and clinical reasoning skills is described. The scaffolded nature of the learning activities, incorporating Kolb's reflective learning cycle, was used to support students' capacity for clinical reasoning and better prepare them for clinical placement. The peer-assessment element was also designed to support the experiential learning by allowing students to test their evaluation of hand orthoses, compare their assessment with an expert's, and identify areas for improvement. Students who demonstrated higher grades for the written reflection assessment showed better agreement with the experts (smaller bias, p<0.01). This study concluded there was a correlation between students' capacity for reflective thinking and the development of clinical reasoning. Furthermore, the reflective writing exercise encouraged students to generalise their skills beyond the classroom. The approach and findings of this study are relevant to a range of allied health professions through providing a process to support the development of higherorder critical thinking, reflection, and reasoning skills. Furthermore, the study provides an evidence base to demonstrate that higher reflective skill capacity and critical thinking are crucial to creating agentic learners.
