- In this paper we present the initial findings of a genre based case study at a large Swedish company, with a record of early use of internal email (1982). The design of the particular email system was closely mapped to the organizational hierarchy. One of our informants kept one week of incoming email messages. We then asked questions about each message and how it related to the work of the informant, and to the organization. Based on the messages and the interviews we clustered the messages in different genres. Most literature of genres of organizational communication has focused on the genres themselves, e.g. email messages constituting different instances of genres. We found however that many messages, rather than being instances of genres, were part of informal conversations. In these conversations, however, it was common to discuss and negotiate which genres where appropriate to use in different situations.

- The choice of techniques to support system design is important in order to achieve a satisfactory result with regard to the quality of the future system. In the IDEnet development project, we chose to work with techniques used within, or inspired by, three different research areas: sociology, participatory design and human-computer interaction. This paper discusses the use of one technique from each of these research areas in the development of an intranet (IDEnet) from `scratch to sketch' at the Department of Computer Science and Business Administration (IDE) in the University College of Karlskrona/Ronneby in Sweden. The advantages and disadvantages for the use of each technique for system design are also discussed

- This paper proposes the automated translation of rules extracted from data mining or knowledge discovery tools into active database rules. We term this process of translating a knowledge discovery rule and incorporating it into a database schema in the form of an ECA (event-condition-action) rule as database schema refinement. We introduce a new rule identification measure for categorising knowledge discovery rules into semantic integrity constraints and probabilistic rules, which forms the basis for determining the mode of constraint enforcement in the enriched schema. This measure is based on database statistics and history. Using this measure we estimate and model both the static and dynamic characteristics of a given rule. The rule classification process is followed by the generation of the ECA equivalents. We present a generic technique and show how this is implemented in an Oracle database. Finally, the monitoring of the database scheme refinement process and the transition of a rule from one state to another are discussed
