  • A Quinta Essência de Agustina Bessa-Luís : la saveur aigre-douce de Macao
  • 2011
  • In: Revista Portuguesa Humanidades. - Braga, Portugal. - 0874-0321. ; 15:2, s. 69-83
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In the narrative A Quinta Essência Agustina Bessa-Luís proposes an original reading of the Portuguese postcolonial History, by reinvesting the topics of the intercultural relation and the meeting with the Other. In fact, in the troubled context of April 1974, the character of Jose Carlos Pessanha expatriates towards the East, more precisely towards Macao, one of the last Eastern colonies of the Portuguese colonial Empire. However, the characteristic of this tour of rediscovery of the East is that it makes the destiny of a character in search of himself coincide with the questioning of a country still looking for its own identity. Thus, in this voyage backwards into the Luso-Eastern History, the Author draws the portrait of a Nation-Empire split between the desire of incarnating this “genetic superiority of the Occident” and the fascination for the culture of the Other, symbolizing an “excess of otherness” (B. of Sousa Santos) in the Portuguese identity. Macao, will be the territory of an “entre-deux” and an intercultural circulation, as well as an emblematic ground to the expression of the “ambivalent and hybrid” position (colonizing/colonized) of Portugal in the Occident. As a consequence, the uncomfortable “non-inscription” (J. Gil) and the “nomadism” (Deleuze/Guattari) which characterizes José Carlos Pessanha, would be a reflection of yesterday’s and today’s Lusitanian epopee.

  • Complementos finitos e infinitivos dos verbos perceptivos : iconicidade linguística e subjectificação
  • 2007
  • In: Revista Portuguesa de Humanidades: Estudos Linguísticos. - 0874-0321. ; 11:1, s. 251-283
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The present paper is a qualitative study on finite and infinitive complements of the perception verbs ver ouvir and sentir in European Portuguese. Departing from a cognitive perspective of language, the paradigm of Cognitive Grammar (Langacker 1987, 1991), the paper claims that these complements present significant conceptual differences. On the one hand, the structure perceptive verb + infinitive complement often designate direct sensorial perception with the main verb. On the other hand, the finite complements tend to denote an inferential process. It is argued that these differences can be explained by the notion of iconicity: a greater formal distance and complexity matches a greater conceptual distance and complexity. Further, by designating an inferential process between the linguistic units, the structure main verb + finite complement shows evidence of a higher degree of subjectification than the structure with infinitive complements. The original meaning where the main verb denotes the subject’s direct and sensorial perception is replaced by the speaker’s/conceptualizer’s mental and inferential process. Keywords: complementation; Cognitive Grammar; iconicity; inference; subjectification; perception verbs.

  • Estruturas causativas no Português : Um estudo sobre a relação entre o modo conjuntivo e os conceitos de subjetificação e domínio
  • 2013
  • In: Revista Portuguesa de Humanidades. - Braga. - 0874-0321. ; 17:1, s. 97-120
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Studies carried out within a cognitive-functional perspective of linguistic analysisdistinguish a relation between the structural properties of complements of causationverbs and the kind of causation they designate. The present paper follows this lineof investigation. However, the focus of the analysis is put on the relation between thesubjunctive mood and the concepts of subjectification and dominion in causativestructures. The hypothesis put forward is that the relation between the Portuguesecausation verbs fazer and deixar, on the one hand, and the subjunctive complement, onthe other, can be can be explained in terms of subjectification, i.e. a diminished degreeof subject control. Accordingly, it is argued that the subjunctive mood designates anevent that is located outside the conceptualizer’s dominion.

  • Uma aproximação cognitiva ao modo conjuntivo
  • 2010
  • In: Revista portuguesa de humanidades. Estudos linguísticos. - Braga : Aletheia. - 0874-0321. ; 14:1, s. 151-174
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The present paper analyses the semantic meaning of the subjunctive mood from the standpoint of Cognitive Grammar (Langacker 1987, 1991, 2008). It is shown that the subjunctive mood appears in grammatical contexts where the described event is outside the conceptualizer’s dominion: either because of a minimal possibility to actively exert control over the described event, either because the event does not correspond to the conceptualizer’s conception of reality. Thus, it is argued that the semantic meaning of the subjunctive mood is associated with events and propositions outside the conceptualizer’s dominion. The analysis focuses on complements of volitional, epistemic and factive verbs, and on relative clauses
