We are now well past the silver jubilee for halo nuclei and it may be of some interest to look back and reflect on how the emergence of this new type of nuclear structure has influenced the progress of our science. Time-wise, the discovery of halos coincide with the rapid growth of the field of radioactive ion beams (RIB) also called radioactive nuclear beams, as seen, for example, from the conference series starting in 1989 that carried this name. Even though many of the developments within RIB physics would have happened without the impetus given by the many experiments on halo nuclei, many were indeed triggered by the halo phenomenon and the speed with which they have been implemented has certainly been increased. We shall briefly recall some historical important contributions to halo physics and attempt to show the many-faceted influence they have had. We also offer some speculations on the future progress.

    • Our knowledge of the properties of atomic nuclei rests mainly on the study of nuclear reactions and radioactive decays. The latter is extremely valuable and often provides the first information on newly synthesized nuclei, but the former has the great advantage of its flexibility. It allows us to vary the degrees-of-freedom in the nucleus that are important such as the excitation energy, the angular momentum, or the rotational frequency (spin) of the final products. By selecting a suitable combination of projectile target and beam energy, we can obtain a variety of results ranging from the reaction products to the character of the states that are populated. © 2006, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

    • While being on a picnic, if you are not sure whether you brought the boiled or the raw eggs in your basket, there is a simple way of telling without smashing them open: Simply spin them. The boiled egg will spin very fast when you rotate it, whereas the raw egg will resist the spinning motion. Nuclear physicists make nuclei spin to study their internal features. Some 50 years ago a most astonishing effect was observed in rapidly rotating nuclei. This surprise discovery, known as backbending, which is a unique phenomenon in the finite, many-body quantum system, triggered a revolution of our studies into the structure of the atomic nucleus that continues to the present day.
