- The purpose of this study was to describe the perception of urinary incontinence (UI) among Syrian women living in Sweden. DESIGN: A qualitative, descriptive design with focus group discussions (FGDs) was used and analyzed with content analysis. Fourteen Syrian women were interviewed in three FGDs. FINDINGS: Three categories emerged, "Thoughts on UI," "Managing UI," and "Communication With the Health Care System." Among the interviewees, UI was a common, and expected, problem, which could be managed. However, some expressed shame and embarrassment. Some talked about communication problems with health care. DISCUSSION: and Implications for Practice: The health care system should be adjusted to the women's needs, with awareness of the communication difficulties, which could result in misunderstanding and neglected treatments.

- The purpose of the study was to explore the encounters with the health care system in Sweden of women from Somalia, Eritrea, and Sudan who have been genitally cut. A qualitative study was performed through interviews with 22 women originally from Somalia, Sudan, and Eritrea who were living in Sweden. The women experienced being different and vulnerable, suffering from being abandoned and mutilated, and they felt exposed in the encounter with the Swedish health care personnel and tried to adapt to a new cultural context. The results of this study indicate a need for more individualized, culturally adjusted care and support and a need for systematic education about female genital cutting for Swedish health care workers.

- The aim of this study was to explore the approach adopted by health care practitioners when handling transcultural encounters. The study was performed by means of action research, a reflective process led by practitioners and researchers working together to improve practice and solve problems. Data were collected through participant observations at a coronary unit in Sweden and group discussions with the health care professionals and were analyzed and interpreted using a hermeneutic approach. The narratives in the interview text illustrated a switch between three levels of understanding human behavior: the individual level (personality), the collective or group level (what is termed culture), and the universal level (human nature), focusing on differences in the first two and similarities in the third. This study highlights the importance of practitioners comprehending the complex relationship between individuality and cultural context and understanding cultural identity as being fluid and coexisting with other differences, such as class, education, gender, and age.

- Self-perceived health status and sense of coherence (SOC) are essential constructs for capturing health outcomes in children with type 1 diabetes (T1D). This study measured self-perceived health status and SOC in children with T1D and compared them with a healthy reference group in West Bank, Palestine.One hundred children with T1D aged 8 to 18 years and 300 healthy children completed PedsQL 4.0 Generic Core Scales and SOC-13 in a cross-sectional descriptive study.All children reported acceptable self-perceived health status and low degree of SOC. In the diabetes group, high degree of SOC was associated with better self-perceived health status and more optimal metabolic control. Males in the diabetes group reported higher self-perceived health status than females.The unstable political situation in Palestine may threaten SOC in children in general. Health professionals can monitor self-perceived health status and SOC to evaluate interventions aiming to improve glycemic control.

- This study develops a sociocultural health and illness model for Iranian late-in-life immigrants in Sweden by analyzing ways in which they perceive, experience, and explain their health situations. Fifteen Iranian immigrants, ages 55 to 80, were interviewed; data were analyzed using the interpretive-phenomenology method. The interviews revealed the following concepts: Reflections on the meaning of health were interpreted as cultural understanding of health. Reflections expressing knowledge about preventing illness and maintaining health were interpreted as proposed strategies and beliefs. Reflections expressing how to prevent illness and maintain health were interpreted as practical strategies, which were based on understanding of cultures and were contingent on immigration. Health care providers might use the resulting model to assist patients and families in appropriating cures and symptom management to support patients’ sense of well-being.

- Purpose: The incidence of gestational diabetes among Chinese women is 4.3%. No study has previously been conducted about beliefs and health-related behavior among urban Chinese women with this disease. This article aims to explore beliefs about health and illness and health-related behavior among women in this group in a Chinese sociocultural context.Design: A qualitative exploratory study was conducted and semistructured individual interviews (n = 15) were processed by content analysis.Results: Beliefs about health and illness among these women were foremost attributed to the individual, social, and natural worlds. They feared the negative influence of gestational diabetes, but some of them believed in “letting nature take its course” and “living in the present.” Their care-seeking behavior varied between the professional, popular, and folk sectors. They sought a balance between following professionals’ advice and avoiding practical difficulties.Conclusion: The beliefs and health-related behavior among them were influenced by Chinese culture, which can sometimes but not always reduce the effect of the disease.

- As Sweden changes toward a multicultural society, scientific knowledge of transcultural nursing care becomes increasingly important. Earlier studies in Swedish nursing education have demonstrated a lack of knowledge base in transcultural nursing.Through an extensive review of literature, a didactic model was developed to help facilitate the establishment of this body of knowledge in transcultural nursing. The article demonstrates how the model applies the content and structure of Leininger's theory of culture care diversity and universality and ethnonursing method in a 3-year nursing program in theory as well as clinical education. The model includes a written guide for faculty members, with references to scientific articles and documents to be used.

- Introduction: Nurses in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) represent a multicultural workforce who are educated in different countries from around the world. The purpose was to assess professional competence among a multicultural workforce of registered nurses in KSA in relation to individual and work-related factors. Method: The Nurse Professional Competence Scale was used in a cross-sectional design. Results: Registered nurses (N = 541) reported highest scores for "nursing care," and "value-based nursing care," and lowest scores for "care pedagogics," and "development, leadership, and organization of nursing care." All CAs achieved 0.80 or more Cronbach's alpha. Known-group validity was verified by comparing nurse managers and staff nurses competence in organization, administration, and leadership of nursing care (p = .000). Discussion: There is room for competence development in care pedagogics, and development, leadership, and organization of nursing care. Assessing registered nurses competence is of importance for planning and implementing cultural congruent nursing care.

- Introduction: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) plans to become self-sufficient, generating a national nursing workforce. The study's purpose was to assess nurses' self-reported professional competence and illuminate experiences of the quality of nursing care and patient safety. Methodology: A cross-sectional design with 469 nurses working in different units from two public hospitals and Regions of the KSA participated. The Nurse Professional Competence Scale short version including six professional areas of nursing care was used. Results: There are significant relationships between self-reported professional competence and the quality of nursing care, patient safety, nurse's characteristics, and workplace. Discussion: Registered nurses' professional competence is related to the clinical areas in which they work and the nature of their involvement in patient care. The Nurse Professional Competence Scale can identify professional competence areas for further development, which is important for culturally congruent health care in KSA for their transformation process.

- Purpose: To elucidate the experiences and beliefs of care of elderly Finnish immigrants living in Sweden (Sweden-Finns) in order to gain an understanding of the role ethnic background plays in these experiences and beliefs. Design: 39 elderly Sweden-Finns living in Stockholm were interviewed. The data were analysed hermeneutically. Results: On a surface level, the care in Sweden was culturally congruent to elderly Sweden-Finns’ experiences and beliefs of care. However, care in Finland and the care providers with Finnish background were regarded as superior to Swedish caregivers, giving a deeper sense of familiarity and trust in anticipation of good care. Implications for practice: Culturally appropriate care with care providers sharing the same ethnic background is important for ethnic elderly persons in enabling familiarity and trust between staff and patients.
