  • Socially Sustainable Suburbia: Addressing a Puzzling and Multifaceted Issue
  • 2016
  • In: Articulo - Journal of Urban Research. - : OpenEdition. - 1661-4941. ; 13:13
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This issue links the concept of social sustainability with suburbia. It emphasises the multidisciplinary, yet, insufficiently defined character of ‘socially sustainable suburbia’ and engages in a cross-disciplinary dialogue in order to overcome the remaining, predominantly negative connotation of suburban development.

  • The dynamics of metropolitan peripheries: Ongoing changes in residential development in the North-Western corridor of the Madrid region
  • 2013
  • In: Articulo - Journal of Urban Research. - 1661-4941.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper examines the ongoing transformations of residential development underway in the North-Western corridor of the Madrid metropolitan region, which are a consequence of a deconcentration process that has affected the capital of Spain over several decades. It also outlines the historical forces that have paved the way for the contemporary suburbanisation process. This part of the Madrid region, traditionally used for animal husbandry or leisure activities for wealthy social classes, was later occupied by second homes. In recent years we have observed a transformation of these second homes into principal residences, together with a construction of brand-new primary residences. This is linked to the rise in housing prices occurring in central Madrid, which has fostered a centrifugal movement of population. This process has particularly affected single-family housing.

  • L’approche Living Lab et l’aménagement des espaces ouverts agricoles. Un exemple en région métropolitaine de Montréal [Living Lab approach and agricultural open space planning. An example in the Montreal metropolitan region]
  • 2015
  • In: Articulo. - : OpenEdition. - 1661-4941. ; :Special issue 6
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • The production of maquiladora space in Motul, Mexico : from henequen municipality to industrial city
  • 2020
  • In: Articulo. - : Articulo. - 1661-4941. ; 21
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • At the intersection of commodity chains and urban research, this paper engages with Bair and Werner’s “disarticulations perspective” through a conversation with Lefebvre’s “production of space.” I argue that this mix can provide a stronger theoretical lens to explore social differentiation, accumulation by dispossession, and uneven development and with this, shed more light on how the uneven geographies of global capitalism are created and reproduced. I develop my argument fixed analytically in Motul, in the southeastern Mexican state of Yucatán, as I explore the changes that the city experienced in the midst of a maquiladora boom-to-bust cycle. Maquiladoras—a type of Export Processing Zone that were meant to replace the state’s dying agro-based economy—arrived to the region in the 1980s and grew exponentially between the 1990s-2000s. With a historical approach, I draw on discourse analysis and ethnography-inspired fieldwork to unpack how the production of maquiladora space—in the form of the New Frontier—came about at the intersection between discourse, materiality, and effects on everyday life. The creation of the New Frontier unfolded within the logic of a global maquiladora architecture but was carried out by local actors through a double movement of homogenization and differentiation.

  • Street Work : Dynamics and Trajectories of Collective Organizing
  • 2018
  • In: Articulo. - : OpenEdition. - 1661-4941. ; :17-18, s. 1-19
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Street workers may engage in multiple forms of agency. This paper conceives of such forms in terms of a continuum where some forms may evolve into others, dissolve or revert to previous ones. Closer attention is given to the dynamics and trajectories of street workers’ organizations, which vary widely and are poorly understood. In particular, the paper addresses the prospects for and limitations of transformative and sustained collective organization among street workers. Both external and internal processes influencing the dynamics of street workers’ organizations are examined, such as the economic and political context of associations, the nature of their relations with political elites, the governing powers of associations, the nature of their leadership, and who they represent and exclude. This paper enquires into what accounts for demobilization, regression and political disengagement. It also explores whether participation in wider associative networks and collaborations can help overcome some of the fragilities of street workers’ associations, promote their sustainability and broaden their visions. The discussion draws upon literature addressing collective organizing among street workers in a wide range of urban contexts in Africa and the global South.

  • Infelicitous Efficacy : Alfred Hrdlicka’s Memorial against War and Fascism
  • 2019
  • In: Articulo. - : OpenEdition. - 1661-4941. ; 19
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Austrian sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka’s Monument against War and Fascism (1988/91) in central Vienna is the focal point of this article, which asks what contested images in public places do. Hrdlicka’s memorial is treated as a symptom of the changing Austrian memory culture of the late 1980s. We locate the memorial in the context of its realisation and reflect on the performative force, which results from its central sculpture and point of contention: the bronze figure of the so-called Street-washing Jew. This visual element caused prominent after-effects such as public discussions and artistic interventions. Two such interventions by artists Steven Cohen (2007) and Ruth Beckermann (2015) will be briefly invoked in relation to what we argue is this memorial’s blind spot. In their own distinct performative ways, all three works make visible how Austrian participations in the Nazi crimes are being negotiated in the public space over a period of 30 years. However, since only Hrdlicka’s monument is permanently installed, its central image echoes a memory culture in transformation no longer valid.

  • Building-Related Environmental Intolerance and Associated Health in the General Population
  • 2018
  • In: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - : MDPI AG. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 15:9
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • People frequently attribute adverse symptoms to particular buildings when exposure to pollutants is low, within nonhazardous levels. Our aim was to characterize building-related intolerance (BRI) in the general population. Data were derived from two population-based questionnaire surveys, the Vasterbotten and osterbotten Environmental Health Study. We identified cases of BRI if respondents reported symptoms emerging from residing in certain buildings, when most other people had none. The questionnaires covered lifestyle factors, perceived general health, BRI duration and symptom frequency, the emotional and behavioral impact of BRI, coping strategies, and physician-diagnosed diseases. From the total of 4941 participants, we formed two case groups, 275 (5.6%) fulfilled criteria for self-reported BRI, and 123 (2.5%) for BRI with wide-ranging symptoms. Individuals in both case groups were significantly more often female, single, and perceived their general health as poorer than the referents, i.e., those reporting no BRI symptoms. The mean duration of BRI was 12 years. In both case groups, avoidance behavior was found in over 60%, and nearly half of the sample had sought medical care. BRI with wide-ranging symptoms was associated with elevated odds for all studied comorbidities (somatic and psychiatric diseases and functional somatic syndromes). The perceived health of individuals with BRI is poorer and comorbidities are more frequent than among referents. BRI seems to be similar to other environmental intolerances and shares features with functional somatic syndromes.
