  • Manager's task to support integrated autonomy at the workplace : Results from an intervention
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business and Management. - Bayswater, W.A. : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1833-3850 .- 1833-8119. ; 8:22, s. 20-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new managerial task arises in today’s working life: to provide conditions for and influence interaction between actors and thus to enable the emergence of organizing structure in tune with a changing environment. We call this the enabling managerial task. The goal of this paper is to study whether training first line managers in the enabling managerial task could lead to changes in the work for the subordinates. This paper presents results from questionnaires answered by the subordinates of the managers before and after the training. The training was organized as a learning network and consisted of eight workshops carried out over a period of one year (September 2009–June 2010), where the managers met with each other and the researchers once a month. Each workshop consisted of three parts, during three and a half hours. The first hour was devoted to joint reflection on a task that had been undertaken since the last workshop; some results were presented from the employee pre-assessments, followed by relevant theory and illuminating practices, finally the managers created new tasks for themselves to undertake during the following month. The subordinates’ answers show positive change in all of the seventeen scales used to assess it. The improvements are significant in scales measuring the relationship between the manager and the employees, as well as in those measuring interaction between employees. It is concluded that the result was a success for all managers that had the possibility of using the training in their management work.

  • Local Management of a Global Commons? : The Case of Climate Standard Development in the Swedish Food Sector
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business and Management. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1833-3850 .- 1833-8119. ; 9:11, s. 31-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Focusing on climate change, this article discusses possibilities of a local approach to complex globalenvironmental problems. Due to failures of markets and international politics as strategies to govern theatmosphere, an alternative approach could be voluntary initiatives in which the complexity of the globalcommon-pool resource (CPR) is reduced. Assessing such an approach through a case study of food standarddevelopment in Sweden, the outcome is two-sided. By means of scientific explanations and stakeholder dialogue, standards were produced, but attentiveness to CPR management diminished as focus turned towards producerinterests and efficiency increasing measures. Although the climate issue was promoted, the outcome was farfrom the needed change and illustrates difficulties to deviate from prevailing priorities. In order to balance localinterests and power with global and intertemporal values, and reach absolute emission cuts, change in norms andgovernance on every level would be needed.

  • GIS-Based Analysis of Integrated Food Distribution Network in Local Food Supply Chain
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business and Management. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1833-3850 .- 1833-8119. ; 8, s. 13-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Local food producers need to integrate within networks of suppliers, distributor, customers and communityrepresentatives in order to increase their competitiveness. The main objective of this study was to evaluate theperformance of an integrated food distribution network (IFDN) in Sweden. Location and route analyses wereconducted using data of 11 producers, 149 customers and one distribution centre (DC). Geographic InformationSystem (GIS) tools and location analysis techniques were utilized. Route analyses were done considering onenon-integrated distribution system (scenario1) and three different integrated distributions systems (scenarios 2, 3and 4). The results of location analysis indicated that the existing DC is located at best position. When comparedto Scenario1, best improvements were gained in scenario3 i.e. up to 64% in number of routes, 53% in number ofvisits, 74% in transport distance and 63% in transport time. As a consequence, the emissions emanated fromvehicles were reduced. The analyses gave insights into main implications of IFDN such as implication forlogistics efficiency; implication for food and service quality; and implication for environmental sustainability oflocal food supply chain.

  • Two Years of Covid-19 in Retailing : Issues and Changes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business and Management. - : The Canadian Center of Science and Education (CCSE). - 1833-3850 .- 1833-8119. ; 16:12, s. 76-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the COVID-19 pandemic, scholars have studied effects caused by the spread of the novel coronavirus in different fields such as management, finance, business, and social science in general. The retailing sector was profoundly affected by several modifications during and after the first and second waves of COVID-19 worldwide. The spread of Covid-19, with the associated restrictions, the fear of social contact and the need to maintain physical distance, influenced both consumers and retailers. However, it was found that there is a lack of studies on key issues in the retail sector. For that reason, this paper aims to study how scholars in the business management research field have analysed this new retailing crisis and the retail field’s subsequent transformation. By adopting a qualitative research method based on a literature review, this paper identifies the main research topics – shopping, consumer behaviour, technology, and digitalization – related to COVID-19 and retailing in the business management research area. In particular, it was found that the above-mentioned topics need to be investigated in light of their connection and interrelation. The study shows the connection between the online shopping behaviours stimulated by the pandemic, the different retailer strategies to overcome the restrictions, and how digital technologies can serve as a bridge between the two.

  • Business Model Management Typologies : Cognitive Mapping of Business Model Landscapes
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business and Management. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1833-3850 .- 1833-8119. ; 10:3, s. 67-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Business model management is critical in the development of business models aimed to launch innovations and generate high venture performance. This study presents the use of personal construct theory and the repertory grid methodology, a new technique to explore central factors in entrepreneurs’ business model management. We identify typologies for business model management and underlying logics of these typologies. The study advances the business model literature in several ways. First it contributes with visualisation of entrepreneurs’ business model management and hence adds dimension of business model management. Second, theories and methods from cognitive psychology contribute to the literature with new knowledge on business model management. Repertory grid methodology, developed from Personal construct theory, enable identification of entrepreneurial cognitions of business models.Through 11 semi-structured interviews with serial entrepreneurs in the mobile service sector, this paper contributes with a framework that advances the business model literature by identifying business model management strategies and its defining features. Three categories are identified including six types of business model management strategies for navigating management of business models. The identified categories are: 1) “Comprehensive management” characterized by various levels of complexity, uncertainty, and variation, 2) “Risk management” characterized by various types of risks e.g. business, financial and social, and 3) “Resource management” characterized of various types of capital; e.g. financial, social, human, and innovation. The business model management typologies may assist entrepreneurs to reflect on their business model design and management. This study suggests that the repertory grid technique may be useful in understanding business model management.

  • Exploring Waste and Value in a Lean Context
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business and Management. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1833-3850 .- 1833-8119. ; 11:10, s. 282-297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to take a critical, analytical approach to the concepts of waste and value in the leanliterature and how the concepts are applied in organisations’ lean efforts and the ambiguity surrounding theconcept of value.A review of the literature of lean was undertaken with a specific focus of the definitions of waste and value. Inaddition, it is illustrated how four case companies work with waste and value within a lean context. Theliterature review revealed that there have been significantly more frequent and exhaustive discussions of wastethan of value. Waste is often related to the seven wastes, but value is rarely clearly defined. The cases show anexclusive focus on waste reduction, which we argue can result in a loss of value. This paper provides a critical review of the relationship between waste and value and some of the consequencescaused by the actions taken by companies regarding solely focusing on waste. This paper demonstrates the orderwinner and order qualifier dimensions should be regarded in the analysis of waste and value, and incorporated inthe lean toolbox. In the lean research literature there is lack of discussion of the actual value for the customer. Weargue that finding a special concept of value in the lean literature would be desirable, and elaborating on value asa specific tool in the lean toolbox, since the concept of ‘waste’ cannot replace the concept of ‘value’.

  • Together as one : shared leadership between managers
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business and Management. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1833-3850 .- 1833-8119. ; 10:8, s. 46-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The focus of the current paper is the formally shared leadership between managers. Position-sharing within pairsof managers demonstrates an alternative way of organising leadership within a managerial position. This paperaims to contribute knowledge about how to understand the phenomenon of formally shared leadership betweenmanagers, and to suggest concepts for its different forms. In the research literature, a range of different terms isused and it is difficult to see how or when this variation in labels is useful. Shared leadership between managersis here studied in relation to three perspectives: organisational structure, managers’ experiences, and tasks andresponsibilities. Future research has several questions left to answer in order to further understand the relativelywidespread but under-researched issue of shared leadership between managers.

  • Strategy under Uncertainty : Empirical Evidence from Swedish Companies Operating in Russia
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business and Management. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1833-3850 .- 1833-8119. ; 11:5, s. 44-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AbstractThe objective of this paper is to describe and explain company strategies under uncertainty. The study attempts to examine closer interaction between research on strategic management and internationalization theory. Recent escalation of conflict between Russia and the EU/USA in combination with economic recession increased the level of uncertainty. The article explores how this deterioration is reflected in a strategy of Swedish companies operating in Russia. This study builds on the empirical data from a survey conducted in 2015 among 73 Swedish firms. The findings of the study contribute to knowledge regarding diversity in commitments shown by different companies at one particular point of time under the same circumstances. The study reveals a domination of expansion strategy chosen by Swedish firms during the current escalation of uncertainty in Russia. A growing strategy under uncertainty has seldom been reported and analyzed by scholars. The study demonstrated that uncertainty is not only a threat to companies operating on the market, but can lead to expanding strategies attempting to exploit the opportunities that uncertainty might offer. Appraising the risk concept, the study provides implications for companies’ managers on the importance of a commitment decision to face the deterioration caused by the uncertainty. Empirical data from this study also suggest that uncertainty is handled by companies better than one might expect. The article questions whether companies and managers are really risk-averse in their behaviour.

  • The Reproduction of Efficiecy Theory : The Construction of the AstraZeneca Merger in the Public Discourse
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business and Management. - : Canadian Center of Science and Education. - 1833-3850 .- 1833-8119. ; 6:5, s. 16-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mergers have become a generally accepted solution to a broad set of managerial problems in practice. However, research on mergers and acquisitions provides a rather sceptical view as to the success of mergers in solving business problems. The current paper aims at investigating the public discourse on mergers and acquisitions and its relation to the scientific discourse. The public discourse is studied by an analysis of Swedish media reports on the Astra Zeneca merger. More specifically we study the actors given voice in the discourse, the temporal evolution of the discourse and the arguments voiced. We conclude that the discourse is dominated by journalists, managers and financial analysts who all generate arguments based on a rather narrow “efficiency theoretical” basis. This is in conflict with current insights in research on mergers and acquisitions that has proposed more valid and complex models for understanding mergers. The reasons and consequences of this discrepancy between the public and the scientific discourses are discussed.
