  • With a little help from my friends : Gender and intimacy in two friendship research projects
  • 2016
  • In: LIR.journal. - Göteborg : Göteborgs universitet. - 2001-2489. ; :7, s. 55-73
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Friendship is an undertheorized but increasingly important relationship in late modernity. In this article, the authors present findings from two ongoing research projects about friendship, gender and age in contemporary Sweden. They argue that discourses about gender and friendship are very relevant for how friendship is conceptualized both among men and women, but that the well-known ideas about men’s inability and women’s capacity to be close friends ought to be problematized further, from feminist perspectives. Furthermore, they discuss friendships practices, problematizing the frequent equation of friendship and “deep”, intimate dialogues. Intimate dialogues are important but may overshadow other friendship practices, like various kinds of support, but the authors show that support is negotiated in relation to ideas of ideal friendship, permeated by reciprocity and equality. The authors call for further feminist research about friendship, arguing that a feminist perspective can destabilize gendered dichotomies and make it possible to problematize power relations, vulnerabilities and exclusions in friendships.

  • Berättelser om brist : bloggar om ofrivillig barnlöshet
  • 2015
  • In: LIR journal. - 2001-2489. ; 5, s. 39-58
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article studies diary weblogs about involuntary childlessness, focusing on Swedish contemporary weblogs written by heterosexual women. The article suggests that the inability to procreate can be seen as an interruption in the western expectation of a predictable life course, and explores how the weblog authors deal with this interruption. The diary weblog is discussed as a genre and as a form of life writing and pathography, and different types of writing within the weblogs are discerned. The article discusses the blogging diarists’ construction of a new progression in the interruption, through their attempts to become pregnant, and how they deal with contemporary Nordic norms equating childbearing with things like happiness and life meaning, by striving to live up to the norms and at the same time questioning them.

  • The Child in the Forest. Performing the Child in 20th Century Swedish Picture Books
  • 2017
  • In: LIR.journal. - 2001-2489. ; :9, s. 7-25
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article investigates how the child is performed in the forest, or in relation to the forest, in Swedish picture books of the 20th century. Using an ecocritical approach, we lay bare themes, motifs and tendencies that indicate a changing relationship with the forest during the course of the century. While the child is dependent on the forest – but also very knowledgeable about it – at the beginning of the twentieth century, she is increasingly depicted as being cut off from her former natural environment as the century proceeds. Gradually, the idea of the child as a guest in the forest replaces the idea of man and nature being part of a whole, a theme that clearly reflects growing levels of alienation during the twentieth century. Of particular interest is that this alienation and »guest theme« first arises in environmentalist and didactic picture books from the 1950s onward, and especially during the 1970s. During this period, the child was supposed to be educated to take care of the forest and is thus required to conceive of herself as a guest paying the natural environment a brief visit. The feeling of being part of a whole, that is, of nature, starts to disappear. Some picture books from the late twentieth century try to question man’s alienation from the forest and offer an alternative to man’s domination of nature.

  • Degrees of Publicity : Handwritten Newspapers in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries
  • 2011
  • In: LIR.journal. - Göteborg. - 2001-2489. ; 1:1, s. 67-83
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • My paper concerns the handwritten newspaper in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The genre appeared in late sixteenth century as part of a growing public news market, which from the early seventeenth century onwards expanded rapidly with the introduction of the printed newspapers. The latter in parts replaced the handwritten one. However, at about 1700 the handwritten newspaper is still there, fulfilling specific functions alongside its printed twin. The question must therefore be what these functions were and why costumers were willing to pay for a medium that was much more expensive, although subject to the governments’ censorship in the same way as printed newspapers. The paper argues for different degrees of publicity, which shaped the public news market as well as private news correspondences. In consequence, there were different news genres, tailor-made for a general public or more specific groups of recipients. This argument relies on contemporary tracts on the printed newspaper as well as Swedish and Northern German collections of handwritten newspapers.

  • From Chorazin to Carcosa : Fiction-Based Esotericism in the Black Pilgrimage of Jack Parsons and Cameron
  • 2020
  • In: LIR.journal. - : Göteborgs universitet. - 2001-2489. ; , s. 53-72
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Rocketeer, poet, and polyamorous proto-feminist, Jack Parsons (1914-1952) is one of the earliest and most legendary followers of Aleister Crowley (1875–1947) and his religion Thelema in America. A precocious only child and avid sci-fi reader, Parsons made vital contributions to the American space programme, and was briefly regarded by Crowley as a potential successor. However, Parsons’ romantic side, keen imagination, and tendency to be seduced by literary fiction was a source of friction between the two men. Parsons drew freely on gothic horror as well as pulp and sci-fi literature in articulating his personal magical universe. In 1946, he undertook the ‘Babalon Working’: a series of magical operations aimed at manifesting the goddess Babalon on earth as a sort of Thelemic messiah. This paper will explore the importance of literature for Parsons’ magical worldview and experimentation, focusing on three key works: Crowley’s Moonchild, Jack Williamson’s Darker Than You Think, and M.R. James’ short story »Count Magnus«.

  • Alcina rediviva : Transformations of an Enchantress in Early Librettos
  • 2019
  • In: LIR.journal. - 2001-2489. ; :11, s. 67-125
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to follow the transformations in eighteen librettos of the enchantress Alcina from Ludovico Ariosto’s popular chivalric epic Orlando furioso (1516–1532).The librettos used were printed in Austria, France, Great Britain and Italy 1609–1782.The texts encompass different genres like ballets, drami/drammi per musica and feste teatrali. There are several reasons for the popularity of Alcina in the theatre of the Baroque Age, among which are her contrasting moods and the possibility of spectacular scenic effects due to the frequent occurrence of magic. The study shows that whereas there is an impressive variety in the librettists’ approach to Alcina’s personality and the plots in which she is involved, there is no clear development of the topic.

  • Playing With Esotericism. Frank Heller’s Novel Andarna och Furustolpe (The Spirits and Furustolpe) and His Short Stories on Séances
  • 2020
  • In: LIR.journal. - 1102-9773 .- 2001-2489. ; 2020:12, s. 75-88
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Frank Heller (pen name of Ph.D. Gunnar Serner, 1886–1947) published suspense fiction from 1913 to 1947, mostly adventure stories, but also some in the crime genre and some science fiction. He had a keen eye for the potential of esotericism in connection with this kind of story. His first and foremost endeavour into this field is the »from-rags-to-riches«-novel Andarna och Furustolpe (1920), written in Venice (the author was evading the Swedish police since 1912, due to several successful bank frauds involving forged signatures of wealthy patrons). In Andarna och Furustolpe the war-profiteer Wenzel Furustolpe learns how to manoeuvre successfully in business by the deceased skipper Teelemainen, who communicates with him through different devices. In his esoteric short stories, like »Hades’ renässans« (1930) and »Spökguldet« (1932), Heller typically exploits séances, which are invariably fakes, and during which the point is to steal jewels or other valuable objects in the darkness of the room, or to hide messages or objects.
