  • Semiotic vagueness as a tool for goal fulfilment : ‘Platforms of values’ in Swedish public administration
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice. - : Equinox Publishing. - 2040-3658 .- 2040-3666. ; 16:1, s. 5-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past 15 years, ‘platform of values’ texts presenting core values have become common in most Swedish public authorities. This article presents a study of how this genre is understood and used in professional practices. The aim is to show how semiotic vagueness in such texts serves a number of previously under-researched purposes in public organizations, including, rather paradoxically, concrete goal achievement. The framework of critical genre analysis enables the analytical process to move from text to practice, and further to the superordinate level of professional culture. Three different data sets are analysed: 47 ‘platform of values’ texts; a focus group discussion with seven senior civil servants/managers; and a quantitative questionnaire study answered by civil servants from three public authorities. The findings suggest that vagueness serves as a means to exercise managerial control through the promotion of interpretative work and continuous, identity-related dialogues on value related issues. The article argues that even though such uses of the ‘platform of values’ genre may be functional in neo-bureaucratic organizations, it is also problematic when semiotic vagueness is used as a tool for concrete actions such as internal promotions.

  • Blended voices and co-narration in lay– interprofessional talk about return-to-work
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice. - : Equinox Publishing. - 2040-3658 .- 2040-3666. ; 10:3, s. 289-316
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the co-production of narratives based on an analysis of audio recordings from 12 statutory lay–interprofessional meetings involving clients and concerning rehabilitation for return-to-work. Using Bakhtin’s (1981) notion of voice in a similar vein to Mishler (1984), it is argued that a voice represents a specific normative order, displayed in the way of speaking. The premises of the approach taken is that citizens’ problems and needs are often presented as stories and that this particular type of meeting opens up the possibility for what Wertsch (1991) calls multi-voicedness. Three patterns of co-narrating the client’s story of illness and the process of rehabilitation were found. In the most frequently recurring form, there was one primary storyteller and another participant who joined in as a co-teller. Another pattern was that dyadic co-narrated episodes commonly drew on prior contacts between the two storytellers. A third salient feature was how storytelling episodes involved revoicing an absent expert – that is, the interactional move when a speaker makes use of someone else’s words, and what Bakhtin (1981) calls rhetorical double-voicedness. Due to the multi-voicedness character, co-narrated stories in lay–interprofessional meetings often represent two or more perspectives and are founded on the blending of voices.

  • Patient participation, authority and understanding : A case study of communication patterns in a geriatric consultation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice. - Sheffield (UK) : Equinox Publishing. - 2040-3658 .- 2040-3666. ; 12:3, s. 336-353
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: The objective is to examine communication patterns in the discourse that emerges between a female geriatric patient and a pharmacist in the context of using an inhaler. This analysis is done in order to understand the communicative components of consultation interaction that support the patient learning and demonstrating understanding of medical information. Methods: This article is a qualitative case study from a project that video recorded forty (N=40) clinical consultations. The actual case was selected as a representative example of the use of material and visual information resources during a clinical consultation between a patient and a pharmacist in a geriatric setting. Results: The patient’s understanding of the clinician’s medical advice did not result simply from repeating the clinician’s demonstration. Rather, the patient’s discussion and manipulation of the inhaler produced a communication pattern that increased the patient’s authority over topics and forms of expression. Conclusion: A combination of verbal, visual and tactile activities oriented to visual and material information resources, produced pattterns of interaction that enhanced the patient’s participation, authority and understanding of medical information.Practice implications: Many consultations can incorporate elder patients’ use of various visual and material information resources to improve their participation in treatment decisions.

  • Writing about caring : Discourses, genres and remediation in elder care
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice. - London : Equinox Publishing. - 2040-3658 .- 2040-3666. ; 8:2, s. 123-143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we discuss the results of a study within the project Language work as care work. The study focuses on the documentation practices of carers and assistant nurses within three elder care facilities in Sweden. The aim is to explore how representations of work and work content are remediated and recontextualised in some of the key written genres in the nursing home. In this process different discourses, and thus different versions of the practice of caring, are promoted and restrained. In order to show how the literacy practices and written text genres of elder care construe different meanings of caring we closely examine four key genres in the communicative chain and analyse them in terms of genre and discourse. The data discussed here was collected in an ethnographic study lasting eighteen months, using participant observation, qualitative interviews and collection of key texts as the main tools.

  • Professional identity construction in the healthcare sector : Narratives around facilitating migrants’ access to healthcare
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice. - : Equinox Publishing. - 2040-3658 .- 2040-3666. ; 15:2, s. 163-186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Professionals who engage with migrants in the healthcare sector may take on the role of mediator of information or advisor. Research has shown how these roles might either facilitate or obstruct migrants’ access to healthcare, but little is known about how professionals navigate the potentially conflicting interests of migrants and representatives of the healthcare system, despite their central role in realizing migrants’ rights to healthcare. This article explores the perspectives of professionals in the Swedish healthcare sector who engage in mediating healthcare information to migrants across linguistic and cultural boundaries and advising them on how to access services. Narrative interviews with five stakeholder groups were conducted. The narrative analysis of two focal excerpts from different professional groups demonstrates how these professionals construct mediating as multidirectional, providing information to the migrants and also keeping the state authority informed. The findings reveal the importance of the knowledge positions that different professionals construct in their narratives and to what extent these support their perceived potential to change the healthcare system. In contrast to findings from other studies, the participants are adamant as regards the importance of treating migrants within the framework of the legal provisions, rather than by finding ways around legal constraints. Nevertheless, the use of rhetorical means to create an effective story can bear the danger of perpetuating one-sided accounts of the migrants and other stakeholders.

  • Positioning oneself in relation to sources and context – Enactments of independence in undergraduate supervision
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice. - : Equinox Publishing. - 2040-3658 .- 2040-3666. ; 14:3, s. 351-373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Independence is becoming an increasingly important factor in Swedish higher education, especially in relation to undergraduate degree projects. Despite this, there is no shared understanding of what independence is or whether it is to be found in the finished text or in the supervision interaction. In this article I look at one specific definition of independence: the ability to position oneself and one’s work in relation to sources. Three supervision meetings are analysed, selected from a larger body of recorded material from teacher education courses in Sweden. I explore how independence can be enacted in the supervision of undergraduate degree projects, drawing on the analytical framework of appraisal. The theoretical framework is derived from the socio-cultural and dialogical perspective, which proposes that learning and understanding develop in context through interaction and dialogue. Independence, from this perspective, is something that can be explored in enactments in interactions of different kinds. The findings show that the students use different resources in order to relate to sources on different levels, and these levels could be related to independence in different ways.

  • ‘Academese’, ‘church chat’ and the fear of alienating the congregation: Exploring church preaching as a lexical environment
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice. - : Equinox Publishing. - 2040-3658 .- 2040-3666. ; 12:1, s. 50-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study is concerned with communication in religious settings, with a specific focus on the professional practice of preaching. The paper addresses concerns raised within preaching research that preaching in mainline denominations is too academic and/or draws too heavily on theological jargon; however, little empirical evidence for this has been presented. To learn more about preachers’ communicative engagement with their congregations in this regard, the study focuses on preaching vocabulary in three denominations (the Church of England, the Baptist Union of Great Britain and the Catholic Church for England and Wales), using the concept of lexical environment to profile 150 contemporary sermons given in England in the UK and drawing on interviews with practising preachers. Findings indicate (1) that preaching makes only limited use of academic and potentially difficult religious vocabulary, and (2) that preaching is an inclusive, sensitive and carefully attuned lexical environment where preachers’ lexical practices appear to help them achieve their discursive aims. The study furthermore shows how preachers are lexically aware and engage actively with vocabulary at various stages of sermon preparation. In addition, this study goes some way to show how applied approaches to linguistics can be of service to homiletics.

  • Framing in theater rehearsals : A longitudinal study following one line from page to stage
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice. - : Equinox Publishing. - 2040-3658 .- 2040-3666. ; 15:2, s. 187-214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This video-ethnographic workplace study documents a theater rehearsal process, which to date is an under-researched professional setting. More specifically, the study investigates the process in which actors and a director frame various contexts that together build the theatrical framework. Applying a conversation analytic method, the analysis follows actors and a director longitudinally as they frame a performance with respect to a single line in a script. The aim is to uncover how the participants develop the performance by framing various theatrical contexts in situated interactions and over time. The results show that the performance develops in a nonlinear manner, whereby social and psychological contexts are foregrounded first. These contexts are later backgrounded when the participants develop physical actions in the performance. In conceptualizing framing as a process of grounding, it can be seen that the participants collaboratively and interactionally add content to the script, and arrive at a mutual understanding by recycling and developing previously established framings. Negotiations of framings are joint and explicit, thus challenging a view of theater work that actors should not be overly conscious of their actions on the stage.
