  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Sweden has a culture of club sport based on voluntary leadership, with sport being organised as part of a civil society. Each year, approximately 10,000 youth football coaches participate in coach education programmes within their leisure time, with courses being divided into two strands: youth coaching and senior coaching. These are harmonised with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) standards. Specifically, the youth coach education strand consists of three levels of course packages (UEFA C, B, and the Elite Youth A), to support coaches within their specific role on developing youth footballers. The aim of this chapter is to understand youth football coaches' perspectives on coach education, learning, and support systems in Sweden through utilising secondary analysis and combining the findings of two existing studies on coach support and coach education (Hertting, 2019; Hertting and Kostenius, 2016). The use of secondary analysis helps to synthesise the key issues related to coach education, learning, and support for youth football coaches in Sweden, while identifying recommendations to enhance current provision further. © 2022 selection and editorial matter, Thomas M. • Breaking New Ground in the United States : Lessons Learned from a Master's Degree in Soccer Coaching Utilising a Blended Learning Format
  • 2022
  • In: Coach Education in Football. - New York : Routledge. - 9780367709792 - 9781003148784
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The purpose of this chapter is to explore a graduate soccer coach education programme in the United States in the context of increased professionalisation of sport coaching. This study suggests that the collaboration between a higher education institution and a national sport coaching organisation can be productive in a blended (online-residential) environment. It sets an example for other sport coach education programmes in terms of implementing a problem-based approach to learning and linking new knowledge to students’ specific coaching context. Furthermore, this study discusses the value of creating a community of practice where coaches learn from each other through reflective practices. Lastly, this book chapter is a call for university programmes to help coaches strengthen their interpersonal skills as well as the need to develop philosophic skills in coaches to move the professionalisation process along.
