  • FEASIBILITY STUDY ON LOW VOLTAGE DC SYSTEMS USING SMART METER DATA
  • 2013
  • In: CIRED International Conference on Electricity Distribution Systems for a Sustainable Future, Stockholm, 10-13 June 2013.. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology. - 9781849197328 ; 2013:615 CP, s. Article no 0884-
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The introduction of Smart Meter (SM) is a first stagetowards Smart Grid to develop future energy system. Themain difference of a SM with a traditional meter is thatinstead of only showing the current usage on the meteritself, it can also communicate the usage details directly to a Distribution System Operator. In order to make overallreduction in energy consumption, increasing awarenessabout the energy consumption is an important factor. TheSM data gives that facility by visualizing the energyconsumption in real time. The energy consumption can alsobe reduced by using low voltage Direct Current (DC)distribution in houses and offices. Several factors haveincreased the recent interest in DC power system. Thenumber of devices that operate on DC continues to increasein both homes and offices. Most of the devices requireAlternating Current (AC) to DC conversion between the ACsupply and the DC side of the device. These need ofconversion from 230V AC to low voltage DC inside the DCpower consuming apparatus results in a low overallefficiency of the AC system. This work focused on feasibility of using 230V AC to 48V DC converter with SM for a house with low voltage DC distribution system.

  • Propagation of harmonic emission from the turbines through the collection grid to the public grid
  • 2013
  • In: 22nd International Conference and Exhibition on Electricity Distribution (CIRED 2013). - Red Hook, NY : Curran Associates, Inc.. - 9781849197328
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper addressed the harmonic emission from a large off-shore wind farm. An overview is given of the issues, where a distinction is made between frequencies below and above 2 kHz. Three different approaches are presented: a simplified mathematical model; a more detailed mathematical model; and measurements at the point of connection for an off-shore wind farm. It is concluded from both models and measurements that the emission is small for frequencies above a few kHz. However, specific resonances at higher frequencies involving the power transformers, when coinciding with switching frequencies or harmonics of switching frequencies, could result in high emission even at these high frequencies. Studies, including the propagation through the collection grid, are needed with the connection of any wind park to the grid.

  • Technical analysis of an aggregator's operation for the Gotland power system
  • 2013
  • In: 22nd International Conference and Exhibition on Electricity Distribution (CIRED 2013). - : Institution of Engineering and Technology. - 9781849197328 ; , s. 1017-
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The large scale deployment of distributed generation from renewable energy sources may undermine the network safe operation and may require network reinforcements. In order to avoid or postpone the infrastructural investments it is possible to exploit other resources. In this paper the operation of a load aggregator is simulated on the Swedish island of Gotland in different wind penetration condition to test two different business models, one oriented to the price following and the other oriented to the wind following. The adopted methodology is described and the results presented and commented.

  • Guidelines for good practice on voltage quality monitoring
  • 2013
  • In: 22nd International Conference and Exhibition on Electricity Distribution (CIRED 2013). - Red Hook, NY : Curran Associates, Inc.. - 9781849197328
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Guidelines are given for setting up and running a voltage quality monitoring programme. These guidelines are published jointly by CEER and ECRB and contain among others recommendations on the number and location of monitors, on disturbances to be monitored and indices to be calculated, on reporting of the results and on financing of the programme. It is concluded that voltage quality monitoring programs are important tools for voltage quality regulation and that all other possible applications should be kept in mind when setting up such a programme. It is also concluded that such programmes should be funded through the network tariffs; that the results should be made available regularly and that diversification of indices and methods is to be avoided.

  • Harmonics – another aspect of the interaction between wind-power installations and the grid
  • 2013
  • In: 22nd International Conference and Exhibition on Electricity Distribution (CIRED 2013). - Red Hook, NY : Curran Associates, Inc.. - 9781849197328
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Wind parks are known as sources of harmonic distortion. The emission at the classical harmonic frequencies (low order non-triplen odd harmonics) is however low. Potential problems with connecting individual turbines and wind parks occur at non-standard frequencies, mainly due to harmonic resonances. Next to the harmonic currents driven by the emission from the turbines, studies should also consider the currents driven by the harmonic background distortion.

  • Spread of high frequency current emission
  • 2013
  • In: 22nd International Conference and Exhibition on Electricity Distribution (CIRED 2013). - Red Hook, NY : Curran Associates, Inc.. - 9781849197328
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper investigates the spread of the high frequency current emission between devices of different size and the grid. The impact of the EMC filter, either LCL or CLC configuration, has been considered from a simplified model. The high frequency current emission, produced by a large device, can potentially cause a relatively large current flowing through a nearby small device. An important conclusion from the study is that current amplification can occur due to harmonic resonances between different types of filters.

  • A European benchmarking of continuity of supply regulation
  • 2013
  • In: 22nd International Conference and Exhibition on Electricity Distribution (CIRED 2013). - Red Hook, NY : Curran Associates, Inc.. - 9781849197328 ; , s. 4-
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Council of European Energy Regulators has been publishing Benchmarking Reports on the Quality of Electricity Supply since 2001. For the 5th edition of the Benchmarking Report the 29 member countries of CEER were joined by the 9 NRAs from the Energy Community and the NRA from Switzerland. This paper contains the main results, findings and recommendations on continuity of supply from the latest edition of the Benchmarking Report.

  • National scale impact of the stockholm royal seaport project
  • 2013
  • In: IET Conference Publications. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology. - 9781849197328
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper investigates how results from limited pilot studies concerning Smart Grids can be extrapolated to a Swedish national scale. The paper investigates the challenges with a national scale implementation of a proposed price model for electricity that combines the cost of energy with the cost of distribution that aims to encourage end-consumer Demand Response (DR). The estimated change in the national scale load-curve that may be achieved given high customer DR participation is analysed as well. Numerous challenges of a national scale implementation are identified, mainly regarding the suggested price model's economic incentive and the Swedish apartment configuration of white goods that differs from that of the pilot studies. The estimated change in the national scale load-curve may also pose problems since the endconsumer behaviour that is desirable from a distribution grid point of view may differ from that of an optimal production capacity point of view.
