  • Industrial Graduate Schools: University-Industry Interaction for Development of Absorptive Capacity
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Proceedings of The XXIII ISPIM Conference 2012 Barcelona, Spain - 17-20 June 2012. - 9789522652430
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Absorptive capacity and integration skills of firms are crucialfactors when it comes to reaping the benefits from universityindustryrelations. Education and training of individuals withboth academic and industrial experience that can act asbrokers of knowledge is therefore of great importance. Duringrecent years industrial graduate schools have been developedas an answer to this challenge. We investigate them throughan interview study with PhD students and supervisors. We alsoassess long-term impact through interviews with graduatedindividuals focusing on their use of integration skills withintheir work. We conclude that although industrial graduateschools require a multitude of favourable conditions in orderto realise their potential they are also a powerful tool fordeveloping absorptive capacities of PhD students andsupervisors. We show that positive effects of industrialgraduate schools extend in time, through increased capacitiesto e.g. participate in collaborative R&D projects or educatenew students.

  • Democratizing Innovation - Theoretical considerations
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Proceedings of The XXIII ISPIM Conference 2012. - 9789522652430
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are today trends towards democratizing innovation (von Hippel, 2005) in line with the vision of creative democracy earlier recognized by thinkers like Dewey (1939) and Follett (1998). User involvement and the internet as a medium for interaction is broadening the participation in innovation processes. What is lacking in innovation research is conceptual and theoretical understanding of democratizing dimensions of innovation management grounded in theories of participatory democracy. The purpose of the paper is to contribute with understanding of the character of democratic innovation management based on four variants of theory of participatory democracy. The study is performed through synthesis of liberal, communitarian, discursive and interactive theories of participatory democracy, and investigating how these theories contribute with understanding of participation and the mobilization of creative capacities of people as well as how to integrate them freely into collaborative, innovative and efficient innovation processes.

  • Living Lab Principles : Supporting Digital Innovation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Proceedings of The XXIII ISPIM Conference 2012 Barcelona, Spain - 17-20 June 2012. - 9789522652430
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital innovation processes are becoming more complex with a need for heterogeneous actors collaborating. One approach to support digital innovation is Living Lab. However, even if Living Lab seems like a promising initiative, there is little guidance of how Living Lab can be setup and managed to support digital innovation processes. The aim with this paper is to provide guidance for Living Lab practice and research by presenting a set of four Living Lab principles and explain how these can be put into Living Lab practice. Derived from Living Lab literature, the principles are established and then elaborated by analysing a Living Lab case study from the perspective of the following principles: Boundary spanning co-creation, Exploration & experimentation, User-centricity, Realism & Authenticity. The analysis of the empirical case study is guided by the following research question: how can digital innovation processes be supported by Living Lab principles?

  • The role of identity for open-source software innovations
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of The XXIII ISPIM Conference 2012 Barcelona. - : ISPIM/ Lappeenranta University of Technology Press. - 9789522652430
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes and discusses the role of identity in open source software (OSS) innovations. It illustrates identities through four case studies that include the perspectives of OSS communities, OSS companies, and users. The paper concludes that the community may either have its primary function to provide an OSS aura to the OSS company, or it may have its focus on attracting developers and thereby contributing to innovativeness of the OSS community. OSS community identitie sare mainly self-reflective on its contributors, but also help to create rules of the community. Since it is the OSS company that communicates identities to external parties, the coherence and closeness between the OSS company and the community are important.
