    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • A simplified model for linear correlation between annual yield and DNI for parabolic trough collectors

    • This paper proposes a simple method for estimating annual thermal performance of parabolic trough collectors (PTCs) based on a linear relation with annual DNI for a certain latitude. A case study with simulations for a novel concentrating solar collector in 316 locations for three operating temperature scenarios worldwide was carried out and showed promising results for the latitudes and continents investigated. For a certain latitude and mean operating temperature, the annual yield of a PTC was found to be linearly proportional to yearly DNI. The proposed method will serve as a simplified alternative to the steady-state and quasi-dynamic methods already used. Estimating performance based on yearly DNI can be used by design engineers to do quick preliminary planning of solar plants. Customers can also use this method to evaluate existing solar collector installations. A TRNSYS/TRNSED tool that uses a steady-state model has been developed to carry out the simulations and it has been validated against a PTC array at Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The results show that the simplified method can give reliable estimates of long-term performance of parabolic trough collectors.

    • Solution (31)phosphorus NMR spectroscopy and sequential fractionation were used to follow diagenetic changes in phosphorus forms during decomposition of settling seston in Lake Nordborg, a shallow eutrophic lake in Denmark. In a decomposition experiment, seston released >60% of their total phosphorus during similar to 50 days incubation, although seston collected during summer contained more phosphorus and released it over a longer period compared to seston collected during spring. Seston decomposition increased concentrations of potentially bioavailable polyphosphate and phosphodiesters, but also promoted the formation of refractory phosphorus forms that might be buried permanently in the sediment. Combining these results with in situ measurements of phosphorus concentrations in lake water and sediment traps revealed that the release from settling seston plays only a minor role in the accumulation of phosphorus in the hypolimnion of Lake Nordborg.

  • Effects of solar thermal energy on district heating systems : the case of parabolic trough collectors in a high-latitude region

    • This study investigates primary energy use and CO2 emission reduction potential resulting from the integration of solar thermal heating in biomass-based district heating systems in high-latitude regions. A newly commissioned solar thermal system based on parabolic trough collectors for an existing district heating network in Häarnösand, Sweden, is used as a case study, and its hourly one-year measured data are used as inputs for the analysis. The changes in operation and fuel use for local district heat production are extended to a regional context, considering the short- and long-term perspectives of the energy system. The results show that during the studied period, the solar water heating system provided 335 MWh of heat to the existing district heating system with a supply/return temperature of approximately 80/45 °C. Consequently, 339–382 MWh of biomass fuel consumption could be reducedannually with such an installation, depending on the district heat production technologies being substituted. An annual CO2 reduction of 65.3–189 tons can be achieved in an overall energy system perspective when the saved biomass substitutes fossil fuels. The reduction of CO2 emission depends on the fuels being substituted and energy conversion technology.
