  • Hippocampal subfield volumes contribute to working memory interference control in aging : Evidence from longitudinal associations over 5 years

    • In memory, familiar but no longer relevant information may disrupt encoding and retrieval of to-be-learned information. While it has been demonstrated that the ability to resolve proactive interference (PI) in working memory (WM) is reduced in aging, the neuroanatomical components of this decline have yet to be determined. Hippocampal (HC) involvement in age-related decline in control of PI is currently not known. In particular, the association between HC subfield volumes and control of PI in WM has not been examined previously. Here we investigate the associations between mean level and 5-year trajectories of gray matter subfield volumes and PI in WM across the adult life span (N = 157). Longitudinal analyses over 5-years across all participants revealed that reduced volume in the subiculum was related to impaired control of PI. Age-stratified analyses showed that this association was most pronounced in older adults. Furthermore, we found that in older adults the effect of age on PI was mediated by GM volume in the HC. The current results show that HC volume is associated with the ability to control PI in WM, and that these associations are modulated by age.

  • VEDLIoT: Very Efficient Deep Learning in IoT

    • The VEDLIoT project targets the development of energy-efficient Deep Learning for distributed AIoT applications. A holistic approach is used to optimize algorithms while also dealing with safety and security challenges. The approach is based on a modular and scalable cognitive IoT hardware platform. Using modular microserver technology enables the user to configure the hardware to satisfy a wide range of applications. VEDLIoT offers a complete design flow for Next-Generation IoT devices required for collaboratively solving complex Deep Learning applications across distributed systems. The methods are tested on various use-cases ranging from Smart Home to Automotive and Industrial IoT appliances. VEDLIoT is an H2020 EU project which started in November 2020. It is currently in an intermediate stage with the first results available.

  • Electroactive Covalent Organic Framework Enabling Photostimulus-Responsive Devices

    • Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) feature graphene-type 2D layered sheets but with a tunable structure, electroactivity, and high porosity. If these traits are well-combined, then 2D COFs can be applied in electronics to realize functions with a high degree of complexity. Here, a highly crystalline electroactive COF, BDFamide-Tp, was designed and synthesized. It shows regularly distributed pores with a width of 1.35 nm. Smooth and successive films of such a COF were fabricated and found to be able to increase the conductivity of an organic semiconductor by 103 by interfacial doping. Upon encapsulation of a photoswitchable molecule (spiropyran) into the voids of the COF layer, the resulted devices respond differently to light of different wavelengths. Specifically, the current output ratio after UV vs Vis illumination reaches 100 times, thus effectively creating on and off states. The respective positive and negative feedbacks are memorized by the device and can be reprogrammed by UV/Vis illumination. The reversible photostimulus responsivity and reliable memory of the device are derived from the combination of electroactivity and porosity of the 2D COF. This work shows the capability of 2D COFs in higher-level electronic functions and extends their possible applications in information storage. © 2022 The Authors.   • Cardiac Plin5 interacts with SERCA2 and promotes calcium handling and cardiomyocyte contractility

    • The adult heart develops hypertrophy to reduce ventricular wall stress and maintain cardiac function in response to an increased workload. Although pathological hypertrophy generally prog-resses to heart failure, physiological hypertrophy may be car-dioprotective. Cardiac-specific overexpression of the lipid-droplet protein perilipin 5 (Plin5) promotes cardiac hypertrophy, but it is unclear whether this response is beneficial. We analyzed RNA -sequencing data from human left ventricle and showed that car-diac PLIN5 expression correlates with up-regulation of cardiac contraction-related processes. To investigate how elevated cardiac Plin5 levels affect cardiac contractility, we generated mice with cardiac-specific overexpression of Plin5 (MHC-Plin5 mice). These mice displayed increased left ventricular mass and cardiomyocyte size but preserved heart function. Quantitative proteomics identified sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase 2 (SERCA2) as a Plin5-interacting protein. In situ proximity ligation assay further confirmed the Plin5/SERCA2 interaction. Live imaging showed in-creases in intracellular Ca2+ release during contraction, Ca2+ removal during relaxation, and SERCA2 function in MHC-Plin5 versus WT cardiomyocytes. These results identify a role of Plin5 in improving cardiac contractility through enhanced Ca2+ signaling.

  • Bulk-Processed Pd Nanocube-Poly(methyl methacrylate) Nanocomposites as Plasmonic Plastics for Hydrogen Sensing

    • Nanoplasmonic hydrogen sensors are predicted to play a key role in safety systems of the emerging hydrogen economy. Pd nanoparticles are the active material of choice for sensor prototype development due to their ability to form a hydride at ambient conditions, which creates the optical contrast. Here, we introduce plasmonic hydrogen sensors made from a thermoplastic nanocomposite material, that is, a bulk material that can be molded with standard plastic processing techniques, such as extrusion and three-dimensional (3D) printing, while at the same time being functionalized at the nanoscale. Specifically, our plasmonic plastic is composed of hydrogensensitive and plasmonically active Pd nanocubes mixed with a poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix, and we optimize it by characterization from the atomic to the macroscopic level. We demonstrate meltprocessed deactivation-resistant plasmonic hydrogen sensors, which retain full functionality even after SO weeks. From a wider perspective, we advertise plasmonic plastic nanocomposite materials for application in a multitude of active plasmonic technologies since they provide efficient scalable processing and almost endless functional material design opportunities via tailored polymer- colloidal nanocrystal combinations.

    • Aeroengine manufacturers need to better include assessment of risk and cost for realising the novel products needed to meet the ambitions sustainability driven targets for air transport. Radical technologies are needed that simultaneously require critical manufacturing processes to be assessed already in conceptual design. In this paper, a multi-domain framework for conceptual design and evaluation is proposed that provide the ability to interactively explore the concepts that simultaneously allow a wider range of architectures can be assessed and still include weldability of the concepts. It has been demonstrated how high level, and function driven conceptual design alternatives can be modelled and evaluated to analyse risk and resilience of architectures. Geometrical concepts generated for the most interesting regimes using design of experiments covering a desired design space. For each CAD-model the welding process can be simulated to assess feasibility and lead time for welding, and return quantified results to be included in an integrated results data set for interactive decision making. The paper is the first report from a research project that improve concurrent design of product and production concepts.
