  • Viterbi Accelerator for Embedded Processor Datapaths
  • 2012
  • In: Proceedings of the International Conference on Application-Specific Systems, Architectures and Processors. - 1063-6862. - 9780769547688 ; , s. 133-140
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present a novel architecture for a lightweight Viterbi accelerator that can be tightly integrated inside an embedded processor. We investigate the accelerator’s impact on processor performance by using the EEMBC Viterbi benchmark and the in-house Viterbi Branch Metric kernel. Our evaluation based on the EEMBC benchmark shows that an accelerated 65-nm 2.7-ns processor datapath is 20% larger but 90% more cycle efficient than a datapath lacking the Viterbi accelerator, leading to an 87% overall energy reduction and a data throughput of 3.52 Mbit/s.

  • Risk of colorectal cancer following CT-verified acute diverticulitis -a nationwide population-based cohort study
  • 2020
  • In: Colorectal Disease. - : Wiley. - 1462-8910 .- 1463-1318. ; 22:10, s. 1406-1414
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • AIM: Routine colonoscopy to exclude colorectal cancer (CRC) after CT-verified acute diverticulitis is controversial. This study aimed to compare the incidence of CRC in acute diverticulitis patients with that in the general population. METHOD: Patients with an emergency admission for diverticular disease, to any Norwegian hospital, between January 1st , 2008 and December 31st , 2010 were included through identification in the Norwegian Patient Registry using International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) codes K57.1-9. To estimate the age-specific distribution of CT-verified acute uncomplicated diverticulitis (AUD) and acute complicated diverticulitis (ACD) in this nationwide study population, numbers from the largest Norwegian emergency hospital were used. Patients diagnosed with CRC within one year following the admission for acute diverticulitis were detected through cross-matching with the Cancer Registry of Norway. Based on both Norwegian age-specific incidence of CRC and estimated age-specific distribution of CT-verified diverticulitis, standard morbidity ratios (SMR) were calculated.RESULTS: A total of 7473 patients with emergency admissions for diverticular disease were identified (estimated CT-verified AUD n=3523, ACD n=1206), and of these 155 patients were diagnosed with CRC within one year. Eighty had a CT-verified diverticulitis at index admission (41 AUD; 51.3% and 39 ACD; 49.7%). Compared to the general population SMR was 6.6 following CT-verified AUD and 16.3 following ACD respectively.CONCLUSION: The risk of CRC is higher than in the general population, the first year after CT-verified acute diverticulitis, especially after ACD. This likely represents misdiagnosis of CRC as acute diverticulitis. Follow-up colonoscopy should be recommended to all patients admitted with acute diverticulitis.

  • Efficacy of DAP coated with bacterial strains and their metabolites for soil phosphorus availability and maize growth
  • 2024
  • In: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Nature. - 2045-2322. ; 14
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Phosphorus (P) use efficiency in alkaline/calcareous soils is only 20% due to precipitation of P2O5 with calcium and magnesium. However, coating Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) with phosphorus solubilizing bacteria (PSB) is more appropriate to increase fertilizer use efficiency. Therefore, with the aim to use inorganic fertilizers more effectively present study was conducted to investigate comparative effect of coated DAP with PSB strains Bacillus subtilis ZE15 (MN003400), Bacillus subtilis ZR3 (MN007185), Bacillus megaterium ZE32 (MN003401) and Bacillus megaterium ZR19 (MN007186) and their extracted metabolites with uncoated DAP under axenic conditions. Gene sequencing was done against various sources of phosphorus to analyze genes responsible for phosphatase activity. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) gene amplicon of 380bp from all tested strains was showed in 1% w/v gel. Release pattern of P was also improved with coated fertilizer. The results showed that coated phosphatic fertilizer enhanced shoot dry weight by 43 and 46% under bacterial and metabolites coating respectively. Shoot and root length up to 44 and 42% with metabolites coated DAP and 41% with bacterial coated DAP. Physiological attributes also showed significant improvement with coated DAP over conventional. The results supported the application of coated DAP as a useful medium to raise crop yield even at lower application rates i.e., 50 and 75% DAP than non-coated 100% DAP application which advocated this coating technique a promising approach for advancing circular economy and sustainable development in modern agriculture.

  • Difficulties and possibilities with thiopurine therapy in inflammatory bowel disease-Proceedings of the first Thiopurine Task Force meeting
  • 2011
  • In: DIGESTIVE AND LIVER DISEASE. - : Elsevier Science B.V., Amsterdam. - 1590-8658. ; 43:4, s. 270-276
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: Thiopurines, such as azathioprine and mercaptopurine, are of pivotal importance in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Although these drugs have been used for several decades, still many questions remain unanswered. Aim: To provide an overview of clinically and scientifically challenging topics concerning thiopurine therapy in inflammatory bowel disease treatment. Methods: The first meeting of the Thiopurine Task Force Interest Group was held during the 2009 United European Gastroenterology Week in London (GASTRO2009). The topics of this meeting were of particular clinical and scientific interest. Additional literature was identified by performing a Pubmed search using the search terms inflammatory bowel disease, azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine and thioguanine. Results: The following topics were discussed: therapeutic drug monitoring; the synergy of thiopurines with aminosalicylates and allopurinol; serious adverse events such as opportunistic infections, hepatotoxicity, carcinogenicity and pancreatitis; prolongation of thiopurines during clinical remission; indications for thiopurines in the postoperative setting; and the potential use of thioguanine. Specific interesting and clinically relevant topics for potential future research are provided. Conclusions: Thiopurines remain central to inflammatory bowel disease treatment, although future studies are required to substantiate a more personalised medicine approach to their use.
