  • A man-of-war in pieces : Fragmenting the Rikswasa of 1599
  • 2023
  • In: Broken Bodies, Places and Objects. - : Routledge. - 9781032394992 ; , s. 274-288
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In the 1960s, the wreck of a Swedish early 17th-century warship, the Rikswasa, was salvaged by two diving brothers who used the waterlogged oak in their carpeting business. Substantial parts of the wrecked hull were transformed into souvenirs, furniture and crafts, all marked with a plate stating the unique provenance of the material. The deliberate breakage, which took place at the same time as the world-famous Vasa was being reconstructed only a few miles away, marked the end of a 100-year-long period of commercial salvage operations of waterlogged wreck oak in Sweden, as ancient wrecks were thereafter protected by the Heritage Conservation Act. Drawing from the case of the Rikswasa, this contribution looks into the historic qualities attributed to the waterlogged wreck oak material and discusses how it encouraged fragmentation. It suggests that the breaking and redistributing of the Rikswasa can be understood in terms of a time-specific engagement with the past and an alternative take on heritage, which contrasts with the present preservationist paradigm. In addition, it is shown that the wreck fragments formed new objects in their own right, with a diversity of possible trajectories, and that this was enabled by fragmentation.

  • Baltic Escape Boats in Sweden
  • 2022
  • In: Journal of Contemporary Archaeology. - 2051-3429 .- 2051-3437. ; 9:2, s. 260-277
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This essay presents the results of a survey of the remains of boats used for escaping from occupied Baltic countries to Sweden during World War II. It discusses how such remains can be identified and what knowledge and understanding can be gained from their materiality. Whilst these vessels do cast light on a particular escape situation, they also add to a more general understanding of material culture related to forced migration.

  • 2020
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The Baltic states, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, were occupied no less than three times during the Second World War. Faced with a reign of terror, the threat of deportation, and compulsory conscription, over 30,000 people fled over the Baltic Sea to Sweden. On their arrival in Sweden, most escape boats were confiscated by the authorities and in 1945 were returned to the Soviet Union. This study, which began as an attempt to find out about the Baltic escape boats that ended up in Sweden, is inspired by a foreign boat in a small fishing harbour on the island of Gotland. My curiosity was piqued when I caught sight of the boat and heard that it had probably been an escape boat. The purpose of this thesis is to establish which, if any, Baltic escape boats survive in Sweden, in which contexts they remain, and to review their state of preservation, as well as to answer the question of their significance for the memory of the escape. It is an archaeology of the escape and its aftermath, based on the surviving escape boats – what the boats say about the escape, what happened to them afterwards, and how people relate to them and their historical legacy today. The study looks at 35 boats that have been described as Baltic escape boats in various contexts. It shows that they are found in a multitude of environments and in a range of different states of preservation. The boats illustrate experiences that few other source materials can convey, in a manner pertinent to the archaeological understanding of flight. In addition, the boats are rare traces of an earlier Estonian coastal culture eradicated by the second Soviet occupation. One of the most important outcomes of the study is the documentation from the survey and examinations carried out. Few of the boats were known outside their local context. A national compilation has been lacking, which has impeded research and ultimately our understanding of the breadth and complexity of the Swedish historical landscape when it comes to ship remains.

  • Flyktens hav
  • 2021
  • In: Under havets yta. - : Statens maritima och transporthistoriska museer. - 9789198471496 ; , s. 112-119
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2020
  • In: META H: historiskarkeologisk tidskrift. - 2002-0406 .- 2002-388X. ; , s. 89-109
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Flyktingkällan [the Refugee Well] at Katthammarsvik – on killing time and evicting people. In the summer of 1945, some Latvians who had escaped to Gotland and were accommodated in a refugee camp at Katthammarsvik, created a stone monument called the Refugee Well in a rock wall in the camp area. This article discusses the monument in terms of trench art. In doing that, several links to other internment camps on Gotland and elsewhere are highlighted.

  • Föremål på flykt
  • 2022
  • Book (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract
