  • Micro-Teaching for Pre-Service Academic and Vocational Teachers’ Transformation of Content Knowledge

    • Student teachers who previously have gained academic knowledge or vocational skills often find it challenging to transform content knowledge into teaching activities that contribute to their future secondary students’ learning. Student teachers express a need for pedagogical tools, time to practice, and opportunities for reflection. Previous research has shown that this can be achieved through micro-teaching, which in our interpretation implies that student teachers practice teaching 1) with a limited subject-specific content 2) for a limited amount of time 3) in a low-stakes situation. The aim of this study is to investigate in what ways micro-teaching can support student teachers in designing and conducting subject-specific and pedagogical teaching activities. Our research method is inspired by action research, and conducted in four steps. The first step is to carefully plan how to implement micro-teaching for student teachers in our own teaching. The second step is the implementation. In a third step, we evaluate student teachers’ experiences from conducting micro-teaching through a survey and individual interviews. The fourth step involves analyzing the results, and adjusting our initial plan for implementation of micro-teaching, if needed. Together, these four steps make up the first cycle. We plan to conduct a second cycle before the research questions can be answered. At the time of writing, we are conducting a first cycle in different subjects. Since the study is still in its infancy, there are no results to report, but we expect to find both similarities and differences between the different subjects in how micro-teaching can support student teachers in transforming existing content knowledge into teaching activities.

    • Det analysarbete som gjorts har i denna etapp har genomförts i samarbete med samma tre typföretag - Höganäs AB, Sandvik Materials Technology samt Ovako Steel AB - som i etapp 1. De tre företagen hanterar vardera en avsevärda mängd miljödata som idag finns utspridd inom organisationerna och lagras i olika system varför sammanställningar försvåras. Det betyder att den miljödata som mäts och beräknas lagras på ett sätt som innebär en irrationell hantering av den samlade miljöinformationen. Den analys som visar att det inom järn- och stålbranschen går att beskriva verksamhetsprocesser på ett enhetligt sätt och att miljödatan som företagen mäter, beräknar och lagrar överensstämmer i mycket stor grad. Baserat på detta har en branschgemensam miljödatastruktur varit möjlig att ta fram. Denna struktur är framtagen för att kunna lagra miljödata för utsläpp till luft, utsläpp till vatten, energianvändning och avfall. Utifrån den miljödatastruktur som arbetats fram och genom diskussioner med representanter för typföretagen i projektet har en översiktlig systemskiss för ett miljöinformationssystem inom järn- och stålindustrin tagits fram. Detta miljöinformationssystem kan vara generellt inom branschen och svara upp mot gemensamma krav på hantering av miljödata.

  • Effects of wood ash, green residues and N-free fertiliser on naturally regenerated birch and field vegetation in a young Norway spruce stand in SW Sweden

    • Treatments added to young conifer stands aiming to compensate for the loss of nutrients and alkalinity associated with whole-tree harvesting for bioenergy purposes have the potential to affect the growth of competitors to the conifers. Three different nutrient compensation treatments were applied to a young Picea abies (L.) Karst. stand in south-west Sweden, 2 or 3 years following final felling. The treatments were; fine fraction of harvest residues (15 Mg dw ha(-1)); granulated wood ash (4.1 Mg dw ha(-1)); nitrogen-free vitality fertiliser (twice 1.5 Mg ha(-1)); untreated control. Root biomass and total biomass of graminoids (mainly Deschampsia flexuosa (L.) Trin) were significantly greater in the wood ash and vitality fertiliser treatments than in the residues and control treatments. The aboveground and coarse root biomass of naturally regenerated birch (Betula spp.) and the aboveground biomass of dwarf shrubs (mainly Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull.) and bottom layer were not affected by the treatments. Calcium and magnesium concentrations in the aboveground biomass of graminoids and phosphorus concentration in the biomass of bottom layer were significantly the highest in the vitality fertiliser treatment. Thus, nutrient compensation with vitality fertiliser or granulated wood ash may increase competition from graminoids in the establishment phase.

  • Brukarens roll i välfärdsforskning och utvecklingsarbete

    • På 1980-talet blev ”brukare” ett modeord i offentlig förvaltning och förvaltningsforskning. Termen betecknar den som använder sig av välfärdsservice (jfr. engelskans service user), eller ”slutmottagare” av offentlig nyttighet eller åtgärd. Brukare av välfärdstjänster vet hur hjälp och service fungerar i praktiken och kan därför ge synnerligen viktig återkoppling enligt devisen: ”Den som har skorna på fötterna vet var de skaver”. Välfärdsorganisationer har all anledning att involvera brukare i planering och policyarbete i syfte att utveckla förmågan att göra rätt saker. Det finns inte mycket dokumentation och forskning kring brukarmedverkan i utvecklingsarbete och forskning på välfärdsområdet. I synnerhet saknas kunskap om hur välfärdstjänster tas emot och realiseras i brukarens livssammanhang. En ambition i doktorandkursen ”brukarmedverkan i forskning och utvecklingsarbete inom hälso- och sjukvård, socialt arbete och omsorg” var att samla och presentera kunskaper på området. Kursen genomfördes våren 2009 i ett unikt samarbete mellan Karlstads Universitet, Sheffield University i England, Högskolan i Hedmark i Norge, Hälsohögskolan i Jönköping och Högskolan i Borås/FoU Sjuhärad Välfärd. Texterna i denna bok härrör från kursens föreläsningar och paperarbeten. De ger många exempel på hur brukare kan involveras i forskning och utvecklingsarbete, och presenterar en rad praktiska metoder för brukarsamverkan. Boken rekommenderas till välfärdens politiker och yrkespersoner, till studenter som förbereder sig för välfärdens yrken liksom till forskare och utvecklingsarbetare som vill utveckla samarbete med brukare och brukarorganisationer. Den vänder sig givetvis även till brukare och brukarorganisationer som vill engagera sig i forskning och utvecklingsarbete.

    • Papillary renal cell carcinoma (pRCC) is the second most common type of renal cell carcinoma. The only curative treatment available for pRCC is radical surgery. If the disease becomes widespread, neither chemo- nor radiotherapy will have therapeutic effect, hence further research on pRCC is of utmost importance. Histologically, pRCC is characterized by a papillary growth pattern with focal aggregation of macrophages of the foam cell phenotype. In other forms of cancer, a clear role for tumor-associated macrophages during cancer growth and progression has been shown. Although the presence of foamy macrophages is a histological hallmark of pRCC tumors, little is known regarding their role in pRCC biology. In order to study the interaction between pRCC tumor and myeloid cells, we established primary cultures from pRCC tissue. We show that human pRCC cells secrete the chemokines IL-8, CXCL16, and chemerin, and that these factors attract primary human monocytes in vitro. RNAseq data from The Cancer Genome Atlas confirmed a high expression of these factors in pRCC tissue. Conditioned medium from pRCC cultures induced a shift in human monocytes toward the M2 macrophage phenotype. In extended cultures, these macrophages became enlarged and loaded with lipids, adopting the foam cell morphology found in pRCC tissue. These results show for the first time that pRCC primary tumor cells secrete factors that attract and differentiate monocytes into anti-inflammatory tumor-associated macrophages with foam cell histology.

  • Short-term effects of nutrient compensation following whole-tree harvesting on soil and soil water chemistry in a young Norway spruce stand

    • A growing demand for bioenergy from conventional forestry in Sweden will increase the need of nutrient compensation, that preferably should be made relatively shortly after harvesting and have no undesired side-effects. This study compared the effects of granulated wood ash (Ash), N-free, dolomite-based fertiliser (Vitality) and the green fraction of harvest residues (Residues) on the podsolic soil and soil solution of a young Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) stand in SW Sweden. The treatments were applied three years after clear-felling and whole-tree harvesting. The soil solution was repeatedly sampled in the rooting zone 2-5 years after treatment. The soil study was performed 4 years after the Ash treatment and 3 years after Residues treatment and the last Vitality treatment (the Vitality treatment was applied on two occasions over 2 years). The Vitality treatment increased base saturation and effective CEC in the humus layer in relation to the other treatments, and also increased Ca and K concentrations in the soil solution. The Ash treatment resulted in higher exchangeable K concentration than Vitality in the litter layer, and Residues increased K concentrations in the soil water. No treatment influenced the KCl-exchangeable nitrate concentrations in the soil or the nitrate levels in the soil water. The results indicate that granulated wood ash could be used for long-term nutrient compensation without undesired short-term side-effects.
