  • Comparator Data Characteristics and Testing Procedures for the Clinical Performance Evaluation of Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics. - : Mary Ann Liebert. - 1520-9156 .- 1557-8593. ; 26:4, s. 263-275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Comparing the performance of different continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems is challenging due to the lack of comprehensive guidelines for clinical study design. In particular, the absence of concise requirements for the distribution of comparator (reference) blood glucose (BG) concentrations and their rate of change (RoC), that are used to evaluate CGM performance, impairs comparability. For this article, several experts in the field of CGM performance testing have collaborated to propose characteristics of the distribution of comparator measurements that should be collected during CGM performance testing. Specifically, it is proposed that at least 7.5% of comparator BG concentrations are <70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L) and >300 mg/dL (16.7 mmol/L), respectively and that at least 7.5% of BG-RoC combinations indicate fast BG changes with impending hypo- or hyperglycemia, respectively. These proposed characteristics of the comparator data can facilitate the harmonization of testing conditions across different studies and CGM systems and ensure that the most relevant scenarios representing real-life situations are established during performance testing. In addition, a study protocol and testing procedure for the manipulation of glucose levels is suggested that enables the collection of comparator data with these characteristics. This work is an important step towards establishing a future standard for the performance evaluation of CGM systems.

  • Nanoplasmonic Sensor Detects Preferential Binding of IRSp53 to Negative Membrane Curvature
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Chemistry. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2296-2646. ; 7:FEB
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biosensors based on plasmonic nanostructures are widely used in various applications and benefit from numerous operational advantages. One type of application where nanostructured sensors provide unique value in comparison with, for instance, conventional surface plasmon resonance, is investigations of the influence of nanoscale geometry on biomolecular binding events. In this study, we show that plasmonic "nanowells" conformally coated with a continuous lipid bilayer can be used to detect the preferential binding of the insulin receptor tyrosine kinase substrate protein (IRSp53) I-BAR domain to regions of negative surface curvature, i.e., the interior of the nanowells. Two different sensor architectures with and without an additional niobium oxide layer are compared for this purpose. In both cases, curvature preferential binding of IRSp53 (at around 0.025 nm(-1) and higher) can be detected qualitatively. The high refractive index niobium oxide influences the near field distribution and makes the signature for bilayer formation less clear, but the contrast for accumulation at regions of negative curvature is slightly higher. This work shows the first example of analyzing preferential binding of an average-sized and biologically important protein to negative membrane curvature in a label-free manner and in real-time, illustrating a unique application for nanoplasmonic sensors.

  • Discovery of an Intermediate-luminosity Red Transient in M51 and Its Likely Dust-obscured, Infrared-variable Progenitor
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 880:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the discovery of an optical transient (OT) in Messier. 51, designated M51 OT2019-1 (also ZTF 19aadyppr, AT 2019abn, ATLAS19bz1), by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). The OT rose over 15. days to an observed luminosity of M-r = -13 (nu L-nu = 9 x 10(6) L-circle dot), in the luminosity gap between novae and typical supernovae (SNe). Spectra during the outburst show a red continuum, Balmer emission with a velocity width of approximate to 400 km s(-1), Ca II and [Ca II] emission, and absorption features characteristic of an F-type supergiant. The spectra and multiband light curves are similar to the so-called SN impostors and intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs). We directly identify the likely progenitor in archival Spitzer Space Telescope imaging with a 4.5 mu m luminosity of M-[4.5] approximate to -12.2 mag and a [3.6]-[4.5] color redder than 0.74 mag, similar to those of the prototype ILRTs SN 2008S and NGC 300 OT2008-1. Intensive monitoring of M51 with Spitzer further reveals evidence for variability of the progenitor candidate at [ 4.5] in the years before the OT. The progenitor is not detected in pre-outburst Hubble Space Telescope optical and near-IR images. The optical colors during outburst combined with spectroscopic temperature constraints imply a higher reddening of E(B - V) approximate to 0.7 mag and higher intrinsic luminosity of M-r approximate to -14.9 mag (nu L-nu = 5.3 x 10(7) L-circle dot) near peak than seen in previous ILRT candidates. Moreover, the extinction estimate is higher on the rise than on the plateau, suggestive of an extended phase of circumstellar dust destruction. These results, enabled by the early discovery of M51. OT2019-1 and extensive pre-outburst archival coverage, offer new clues about the debated origins of ILRTs and may challenge the hypothesis that they arise from the electron-capture induced collapse of extreme asymptotic giant branch stars.

  • The SPIRITS Sample of Luminous Infrared Transients : Uncovering Hidden Supernovae and Dusty Stellar Outbursts in Nearby Galaxies
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 886:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a systematic study of the most luminous (M-IR [Vega magnitudes] brighter than ?14) infrared (IR) transients discovered by the SPitzer InfraRed Intensive Transients Survey (SPIRITS) between 2014 and 2018 in nearby galaxies (D < 35 Mpc). The sample consists of nine events that span peak IR luminosities of M-[4.5],M-peak between ?14 and ?18.2, show IR colors between 0.2;<;([3.6]?[4.5]);<;3.0, and fade on timescales between 55 days;t(fade);<;480 days. The two reddest events (A(V) > 12) show multiple, luminous IR outbursts over several years and have directly detected, massive progenitors in archival imaging. With analyses of extensive, multiwavelength follow-up, we suggest the following possible classifications: five obscured core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), two erupting massive stars, one luminous red nova, and one intermediate-luminosity red transient. We define a control sample of all optically discovered transients recovered in SPIRITS galaxies and satisfying the same selection criteria. The control sample consists of eight CCSNe and one Type;Iax SN. We find that 7 of the 13 CCSNe in the SPIRITS sample have lower bounds on their extinction of 2;A(V);<;8. We estimate a nominal fraction of CCSNe in nearby galaxies that are missed by optical surveys as high as

  • Star cluster formation in Orion A
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Publication of the Astronomical Society of Japan. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2053-051X .- 0004-6264. ; 73, s. S239-S255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We introduce new analysis methods for studying the star cluster formation processes in Orion A, especially examining the scenario of a cloud-cloud collision. We utilize the CARMA-NRO Orion survey (CO)-C-13 (1-0) data to compare molecular gas to the properties of young stellar objects from the SDSS III IN-SYNC survey. We show that the increase of v(13CO) - v(YSO) and Sigma scatter of older YSOs can be signals of cloud-cloud collision. SOFIA-upGREAT 158 mu m [C II] archival data toward the northern part of Orion A are also compared to the (CO)-C-13 data to test whether the position and velocity offsets between the emission from these two transitions resemble those predicted by a cloud-cloud collision model. We find that the northern part of Orion A, including regions ONC-OMC-1, OMC-2, OMC-3, and OMC-4, shows qualitative agreements with the cloud-cloud collision scenario, while in one of the southern regions, NGC 1999, there is no indication of such a process in causing the birth of new stars. On the other hand, another southern cluster, L 1641 N, shows slight tendencies of cloud-cloud collision. Overall, our results support the cloud-cloud collision process as being an important mechanism for star cluster formation in Orion A.

  • Hα Emission-Line Stars in Molecular Clouds. I. The NGC 2264 Region
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-6256 .- 1538-3881. ; 127:2, s. 1117-1130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a deep survey of Hα emission-line stars in the NGC 2264 region using wide-field objective prism films. We find 357 Hα emission-line stars, of which 113 were previously detected, within an area of 3°×3° centered on the Cone Nebula, with a majority of stars being concentrated in a dense cluster at the center of the region. We present a large-scale CO map of NGC 2264 and find a strong correlation between the cluster of Hα emission-line stars and the most massive core in the cloud complex. A more extended halo of stars poorly correlated with the gas may represent stars that have drifted away from their birth place, suggesting that star formation has taken place in NGC 2264 for several million years.

  • THE BOLOCAM GALACTIC PLANE SURVEY. XIV. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES of MASSIVE STARLESS and STAR-FORMING CLUMPS
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 822:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We sort 4683 molecular clouds between 10° < ℓ < 65° from the Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey based on observational diagnostics of star formation activity: compact 70 μm sources, mid-IR color-selected YSOs, H2O and CH3OH masers, and UCH ii regions. We also present a combined NH3-derived gas kinetic temperature and H2O maser catalog for 1788 clumps from our own GBT 100 m observations and from the literature. We identify a subsample of 2223 (47.5%) starless clump candidates (SCCs), the largest and most robust sample identified from a blind survey to date. Distributions of flux density, flux concentration, solid angle, kinetic temperature, column density, radius, and mass show strong (>1 dex) progressions when sorted by star formation indicator. The median SCC is marginally subvirial (α ∼ 0.7) with >75% of clumps with known distance being gravitationally bound (α < 2). These samples show a statistically significant increase in the median clump mass of ΔM ∼ 170-370 M o from the starless candidates to clumps associated with protostars. This trend could be due to (i) mass growth of the clumps at M o Myr-1 for an average freefall 0.8 Myr timescale, (ii) a systematic factor of two increase in dust opacity from starless to protostellar phases, and/or (iii) a variation in the ratio of starless to protostellar clump lifetime that scales as ∼M -0.4. By comparing to the observed number of CH3OH maser containing clumps, we estimate the phase lifetime of massive (M > 103 M o) starless clumps to be 0.37 ± 0.08 Myr (M/103 M o)-1; the majority (M < 450 M o) have phase lifetimes longer than their average freefall time. © 2016.
