  • A century of trends in adult human height
  • 2016
  • In: eLIFE. - 2050-084X. ; 5
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.522.7) and 16.5 cm (13.319.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries.

  • On potentials of regularized Wasserstein generative adversarial networks for realistic hallucination of tiny faces
  • 2019
  • In: Neurocomputing. - : ELSEVIER. - 0925-2312 .- 1872-8286. ; 364, s. 1-15
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Super-resolution of facial images, a.k.a. face hallucination, has been intensively studied in the past decades due to the increasingly emerging analysis demands in video surveillance, e.g., face detection, verification, identification. However, the actual performance of most previous hallucination approaches will drop dramatically when a very low-res tiny face is provided, due to the challenging multimodality of the problem as well as lack of an informative prior as a strong semantic guidance. Inspired by the latest progress in deep unsupervised learning, this paper focuses on tiny faces of size 16 x 16 pixels, hallucinating them to their 8 x upsampling versions by exploring the potentials of Wasserstein generative adversarial networks (WGAN). Besides a pixel-wise L2 regularization term imposed to the generative model, it is found that our advocated autoencoding generator with both residual and skip connections is a critical component for WGAN representing the facial contour and semantic content to a reasonable precision. With the additional Lipschitz penalty and architectural considerations for the critic in WGAN, the proposed approach finally achieves state-of-the-art hallucination performance in terms of both visual perception and objective assessment. The cropped CelebA face dataset is primarily used to aid the tuning and analysis of the new method, termed as tfh-WGAN. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach not only achieves realistic hallucination of tiny faces, but also adapts to pose, expression, illuminance and occluded variations to a great degree.

  • Electronic structure and phase stability of plutonium hydrides : Role of Coulomb repulsion and spin-orbital coupling
  • 2014
  • In: International journal of hydrogen energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0360-3199 .- 1879-3487. ; 39:25, s. 13255-13265
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The electronic and magnetic states, chemical bonding and reactions, and phonon spectrum of the plutonium hydrides Puliz (x = 2, 3) are investigated by employing first-principles calculations by means of the density functional theory (DFT) + U approach. The strong correlation and the spin-orbit coupling (sac) effects on these 5f electrons systems are systematically studied. Results show that both the strong correlation and the SOC play critical roles in correctly describing their ground-state properties. The antiferromagnetic configuration of PuH2 is found energetically most stable while for PuH3 the ferromagnetic state is the most stable state. Our calculated phonon spectra clearly indicate the dynamical stability of these magnetic configurations. For PuH3, more electrons from the Pu atoms are released to bond with H than that in PuH2. As a result, the lattice constant is contracted by increasing the H concentration. Reacting from metal Pu and molecule H-2, more PuH3 should be produced than PuH2 in low temperature condition. • Impact of effort reward imbalance at work on suicidal ideation in ten European countries : The role of depressive symptoms
  • 2020
  • In: Journal of Affective Disorders. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-0327 .- 1573-2517. ; 260, s. 214-221
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: Evidence of the association between effort reward imbalance (ERI) and suicidal ideation is sparse. This study examined the influence of ERI at work on suicidal ideation and the mediating effect of depressive symptoms. Methods: There were 4963 workers aged 50 + without suicidal ideation at baseline in the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe, these workers were followed-up for 8-years to detect incident suicidal ideation. ERI was measured by a short ERI questionnaire. Suicidal ideation was evaluated by one item derived from the 12-item Europe-depression scale, and depressive symptoms were assessed by the remaining 11 items in the scale. Cox models were employed to explore the relationship adjusting for potential confounders. Mediation analysis was used to test the mediating effect of depressive symptoms. Results: A significantly higher incidence of suicidal ideation was related with high effort (HR = 1.51) and low reward (HR = 1.42), respectively. A high effort-low reward imbalance was associated with even higher risk of suicidal ideation (HR = 1.96) as compared to low effort-high reward combination. The association was varied by gender, region, education and household income. Depressive symptoms mediated a modest proportion (natural indirect effect 14.4%) of the total association between ERI and suicidal ideation. Limitation: Suicidal ideation definition based on self-administered questionnaires which could lead to false negatives. And some unmeasured confounders might have biased the results. Conclusions: Efforts in promoting balanced effort-reward at work may reduce suicidal ideation among working population aged 50+. Avoiding depressive symptoms may further enhance such efforts.
