  • Improved yield of carbon fibres from cellulose and kraft lignin
  • 2018
  • In: Holzforschung. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0018-3830 .- 1437-434X. ; 72:12, s. 1007-1016
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • To meet the demand for carbon-fibre-reinforced composites in lightweight applications, cost-efficient processing and new raw materials are sought for. Cellulose and kraft lignin are each interesting renewables for this purpose due to their high availability. The molecular order of cellulose is an excellent property, as is the high carbon content of lignin. By co-processing cellulose and lignin, the advantages of these macromolecules are synergistic for producing carbon fibre (CF) of commercial grade in high yields. CFs were prepared from precursor fibres (PFs) made from 70:30 blends of softwood kraft lignin (SW-KL) and cellulose by dry-jet wet spinning with the ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIm][OAc]) as a solvent. In focus was the impact of the molecular mass of lignin and the type of cellulose source on the CF yield and properties, while membrane-filtrated kraft lignin and cellulose from dissolving kraft pulp and fully bleached paper-grade SW-KP (kraft pulp) served as sources. Under the investigated conditions, the yield increased from around 22% for CF from neat cellulose to about 40% in the presence of lignin, irrespective of the type of SW-KL. The yield increment was also higher relative to the theoretical one for CF made from blends (69%) compared to those made from neat celluloses (48-51%). No difference in the mechanical properties of the produced CF was observed.

  • HER2 expression in breast cancer primary tumours and corresponding metastases : Original data and literature review
  • 2004
  • In: British Journal of Cancer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0007-0920 .- 1532-1827. ; 90:12, s. 2344-2348
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the HER2 expression in breast cancer is retained in metastases. The HER2 expression in primary tumours and the corresponding lymph node metastases were evaluated in parallel samples from 47 patients. The HercepTest was used for immunohistochemical analyses of HER2 overexpression in all cases. CISH/FISH was used for analysis of gene amplification in some cases. HER2 overexpression (HER2-scores 2+ or 3+) was found in 55% of both the primary tumours and of the lymph node metastases. There were only small changes in the HER2-scores; six from 1+ to 0 and one from 3+ to 2+ when the metastases were compared to the corresponding primary tumours. However, there were no cases with drastic changes in HER2 expression between the primary tumours and the corresponding lymph node metastases. The literature was reviewed for similar investigations, and it is concluded that breast cancer lymph node metastases generally overexpress HER2 to the same extent as the corresponding primary tumours. This also seems to be the case when distant metastases are considered. It has been noted that not all patients with HER2 overexpression respond to HER2-targeted Trastuzumab treatment. The stability in HER2 expression is encouraging for efforts to develop complementary forms of therapy, for example, therapy with radionuclide-labelled Trastuzumab.

  • Adolescents’ Dissociative Experiences: the Moderating Role of Type of Trauma and Attachment Style
  • 2016
  • In: Journal of Child & Adolescent Trauma. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1936-1521 .- 1936-153X. ; 9, s. 341-351
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This cross-sectional study evaluated the selfreportedattachment style of 239 Swedish adolescents (ages13 to 20) and investigated the relation between dissociation, attachment, and potentially traumatic events (PTEs). We hadhypothesized that specific PTEs, including family-relatedemotional and physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotionalabuse by non-relatives such as bullying, would interact withinsecure attachment styles leading to higher levels of dissociation. Results show that insecure attachment styles predicteddissociative experiences (DE) independently of PTE exposure.Dissociative experiences related more strongly to PTEexposure when the adolescent had an anxious attachmentstyle. Our results also suggest that higher rates of DE arerelated to an interaction between insecure attachment stylesand the experience of verbal harassment and bullying, mainlyby peers in school. We conclude that the relation betweentrauma and dissociation is complex, with both type of traumaand attachment style interacting with dissociative phenomena.

  • Dissociative Experiences and Trauma Exposure Among Newly Arrived and Settled Young War Refugees
  • 2017
  • In: Journal of Aggression, Maltreatment and Trauma. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1092-6771 .- 1545-083X. ; 26:10, s. 1132-1149
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • War-traumatized refugee adolescents are a vulnerable and understudied group. This study of two different groups of war-traumatized youth (N = 77) resettled in Sweden (newly arrived refugee adolescents, n = 42, 13–19 years, and settled students with childhood war experiences, n = 35, 11–18 years) evaluated their war experiences, refugee journey, general trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and dissociative experiences. Both groups had experienced many traumas and a substantial proportion reported levels consistent with posttraumatic stress (71% in the newly arrived group and 34% among the settled students) and dissociation (36% and 23%, respectively). The study also provides information about the type of adverse events experienced by war-refugee adolescents, including their own subjective appraisals of the worst events. The results show that the extent of trauma exposure and posttraumatic and dissociative symptomatology among refugee adolescents are considerable even after a period of resettlement, a finding that has educational, clinical, and social implications.

  • Types of Trauma in Adolescence and Their Relation to Dissociation: A Mixed-Methods Study
  • 2016
  • In: Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy. - 1942-9681. ; 8, s. 568-576
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Objective: To study adolescent traumatization and the impact of various types of trauma on dissociative experiences in a sample of 239 Swedish youngsters, 13 to 20 years of age, with diverse socioeconomic and migration backgrounds. We also evaluated whether the type of worst lifetime trauma was associated with higher rates of dissociation.Method: Quantitative and qualitative data on posttraumatic stress, dissociative experiences, and potentially traumatic events (PTEs), including participants' written descriptions of their worst lifetime trauma. Results: Most (92%) of the participants had been exposed to at least 1 PTE and 51% to 4 or more, during their life. Number of PTEs correlated with symptoms of posttraumatic stress and dissociation. There were higher rates of dissociation among economically vulnerable and second-generation war refugee participants. Emotional abuse by others (mostly peers) was the only significant predictor of dissociation when controlling for gender, age, total PTEs, posttraumatic stress, and poverty. Moderation analyses showed that lifetime worst traumas categorized as primarily emotional moderated and amplified the relation between total PTEs and dissociation, but only among girls. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that traumatization is very common among adolescents, with greater prevalence of dissociation among vulnerable groups, and that emotional traumas are linked to higher rates of dissociation, especially among girls. Researchers, clinicians, and school personnel need to focus more on immigrant status and low SES as vulnerability factors, and address the consequences of emotional abuse, including bullying, among adolescents.

  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In this research report, a new methodology has been developed in order to integrate several X-band radar data sets in to one complete set. Furthermore, a direct and an indirect evaluation have been conducted compared to stationary rain gauges and C-band radar. In the indirect analysis, the input data sets were integrated into runoff models for Ellinge and Lundåkra WWTP where the results were compared to measured incoming flow to the sewage plants.

  • Type I collagen alpha1 Sp1 polymorphism and the risk of cruciate ligament ruptures or shoulder dislocations
  • 2008
  • In: American Journal of Sports Medicine. - : SAGE Publications. - 0363-5465 .- 1552-3365. ; 36:12, s. 2432-2436
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Cruciate ligament ruptures and shoulder dislocations are often caused by trauma, but predisposing intrinsic factors might also influence the risk. These injuries are more common in those with a previously injured sibling, an observation that might indicate a genetic predisposition. It is well known that polymorphisms in the collagen I gene are associated not only with osteoporosis and osteoporotic fracture risk, but also with osteoarthritis. HYPOTHESIS: Because collagen I is abundant in ligaments and tendons, the authors hypothesized that collagen I alpha1 Sp1 polymorphism also was related to the occurrence of cruciate ligament ruptures and shoulder dislocations. STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: A total of 358 patients and 325 randomly selected population-based female controls were included in the study. Of the cases, 233 had a cruciate ligament rupture and 126 had had a shoulder dislocation. Age-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) estimated by unconditional logistic regression were used as measures of association. RESULTS: Compared with the homozygous SS category, the heterozygous participants displayed a similar risk (OR, 1.06; 95% CI, 0.76-1.49), whereas the ss genotype was underrepresented in the injured population compared with the controls (OR, 0.15; 95% CI, 0.03-0.68). This latter estimate was similar for both cruciate ligament ruptures and shoulder dislocations, and was furthermore not modified by general joint laxity. CONCLUSION: The authors found a substantially decreased risk of these injuries associated with collagen type I alpha1 Sp1 polymorphism. The study might encourage other investigators to consider further research in the area of genes and soft tissue injuries.
