  • Predicting and Preventing Inconsistencies in Deployed Distributed Systems
  • 2010
  • In: ACM Transactions on Computer Systems. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 0734-2071 .- 1557-7333. ; 28:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We propose a new approach for developing and deploying distributed systems, in which nodes predict distributed consequences of their actions, and use this information to detect and avoid errors. Each node continuously runs a state exploration algorithm on a recent consistent snapshot of its neighborhood and predicts possible future violations of specified safety properties. We describe a new state exploration algorithm, consequence prediction, which explores causally related chains of events that lead to property violation. This article describes the design and implementation of this approach, termed CrystalBall. We evaluate CrystalBall on RandTree, BulletPrime, Paxos, and Chord distributed system implementations. We identified new bugs in mature Mace implementations of three systems. Furthermore, we show that if the bug is not corrected during system development, CrystalBall is effective in steering the execution away from inconsistent states at runtime.

  • Does Vibration Foam Roller Influence Performance and Recovery? : A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
  • 2022
  • In: Sports Medicine - Open. - : Springer. - 2199-1170 .- 2198-9761. ; 8:1
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: Foam rolling has been extensively investigated, showing benefits in performance and recovery. Recently, vibration has been added to foam rollers, with hypothesized advantages over conventional foam rollers. However, there is no systematic evidence in this regard. Objective: To carry out a systematic review and meta-analysis about the effects of vibration foam roller (VFR) on performance and recovery. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science and SportDiscus according to the PRISMA guidelines. The outcomes included performance (jump, agility and strength) and recovery variables (blood flow, pain and fatigue) measured after an intervention with VFR. The methodological quality was assessed with the PEDro scale. A random-effects model was used to perform the meta-analysis.Results: Initially, 556 studies were found and after the eligibility criteria 10 studies were included in the systematic review and 9 in the meta-analysis. There was no significant effects on jump performance (SMD = 0.14 [95% CI − 0.022 to 0.307]; p = 0.101; I2 = 1.08%) and no significant beneficial effects were reported on isokinetic strength (SMD = 0.16 [95% CI − 0.041 to 0.367]; p = 0.117; I2 = 9.7%). Recovery appears to be enhanced after VFR interventions, but agility does not seem to increase after VFR interventions. Conclusion: This systematic review and meta-analysis suggest that VFR could have great potential for increasing jump performance, agility, strength and enhancing recovery. Further research is needed to confirm the effects of VFR on performance and recovery.Trial Registration This investigation was registered in PROSPERO with the code CRD42021238104.

  • mu SR studies of grey and white tin, alpha- and beta-Sn
  • 2009
  • In: Physica. B, Condensed matter. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-4526 .- 1873-2135. ; 404:5-7, s. 884-887
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The behaviour of monatomic hydrogen defect centres is modelled using implanted positive muons in both allotropes of elemental tin. A new search for paramagnetic muonium is made in alpha-Sn, the semiconducting allotrope with the diamond structure. No deep state is found, nor any enhanced Korringa relaxation that would suggest localized moment formation on interstitial protons in this intriguing material. In relation to muonium in the other Group-IV semiconductors, tantalizing indications of shallow state formation below 30 K suggest that a deep-to-shallow transition may be responsible. The diamagnetic state remains static to 200 K and may be tentatively identified as the bond-centred positive ion, by comparison with recent data for silicon. This behaviour contrasts with the abrupt onset of mobility at 50K for muons in beta-Sn, the normal metallic allotrope with tetragonal structure, for which a more conventional interstitial site has lately been determined. Mobility studies are admittedly difficult in the presence of such weak nuclear magnetism but a discrepancy arises between reported migration barriers in white tin.

  • Distribution strategies for volume and premium brands in highly competitive consumer markets
  • 2008
  • In: Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services. - : Elsevier BV. - 0969-6989 .- 1873-1384. ; 15:4, s. 250-265
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article deals with distribution strategies for volume and premium brands in the automobile industry. Like some other consumer markets, the car market has become subject to substantial overcapacity in the last decade and subject to a pressure to keep costs low, while at the same time manufacturers emphasize immaterial values and attempt to strengthen the brand to get an advantage over competitors. A number of theoretical themes are related to extensive case studies carried out in Sweden, the UK, Germany, Spain and Australia. One hundred and nine interviews were carried out with manufacturers, importers, dealers and industry experts. Theories used in the study emerge from two research traditions. First, perspectives on corporate identity and brand management are applied to distribution channels. Second, theories on channel structure, i.e. the choice of selling through one channel or dual-multi-distribution, solus- and multi-franchising, and channel ownership, i.e. direct and indirect channels are applied. Theories are woven together in a concluding analysis of distribution strategies for volume and premium brands. Some conclusions on the brand's influence on distribution strategies emerge in the study. The findings suggest that while distribution activities may be shared among channel members in a channel selling volume brands, there is a great need for coordination in channels selling premium brands to secure premium values that reflect the brand's raison d'être and justify its price premium. Anchorage in the local market is crucial for motivating the volume brand dealer, and also critical for volume dealers to stay viable and competitive. Identification with the local dealer appears to be crucial in designing distribution strategies for volume brands. A premium brand is less related to the local market: Rather, its competitive advantage is based on strong brand identification and the consumer is likely to be attracted by the image of the premium brand than by the local dealer. Creating a consistent brand experience is thus decisive for premium brands whose content to a great extent is global and goes beyond the influence of local dealers and cultures. Moreover, an understanding of the brand is suggested to be indispensable in analysing push-pull mechanisms. While pull systems are associated with higher channel efficiency, the study suggests that pull systems are unlikely to work for volume brands: high manufacturing overcapacity is beyond the influence of individual manufacturers, thus industry overcapacity forces volume brand manufacturers to push cars to the market. Premium brands, with demand in reasonable balance with supply, may restrict the use of push systems without losing sales volume. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Phylogeny and Taxonomy of Subfamily Zygophylloideae (Zygophyllaceae) with Special Reference to the Genus Fagonia
  • 2003
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Members of Zygophylloideae are shrubs, shrublets and herbs of arid and semiarid areas of almost all continents, and many of the species are major components of the vegetation in their areas of distribution. A phylogenetic analysis of Zygophylloideae based on noncoding trnL plastid DNA sequences and morphological data, indicates that the currently recognised genera Augea, Tetraena, and Fagonia, are embedded in Zygophyllum. A new generic classification based on six monophyletic and morphologically distinctive entities is proposed here: Augea, Fagonia, Melocarpum, Roepera, Tetraena and Zygophyllum. The taxonomy of the genus Fagonia is revised in detail. A key to the 34 species recognised is presented, as well as descriptions and distribution maps for each species. Five new species are described and illustrated, F. densispina, F. gypsophila and F. latistipulata from Somalia, and F. hadramautica and F. mahrana from the southern part of the Arabian peninsula. Of the accepted species, 26 are restricted to the Old World and eight to the New World. The names of all four species of Fagonia currently on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Plants are put into synonymy. Instead, eight other species are proposed for this list.Relationships within Fagonia are inferred from analysis of plastid trnL intron and nuclear ribosomal ITS sequences. The phylogenetic analysis is performed using parsimony and Bayesian model averaging. All species of Fagonia in the Old World, except F. cretica, form a weakly supported clade, and all Fagonia species of the New World, except F. scoparia, form a second, well supported clade, sister to the Old World clade. Fagonia scoparia, endemic to northeastern Mexico, is sister to all other Fagonia species. Vicariance-dispersal analysis indicated that the occurrences of Fagonia in South America and southern Africa are due to dispersals, and that the ancestor of Fagonia had a distribution in agreement with the boreotropics hypothesis.
