- CBI har under andra halvåret 2010 och första halvåret 2011 genomfört en studie av innovationsledning hos 38 utvalda svenska företag inom tillverkning, IT och Telekom. Syftet var att undersöka hur företagen leder och organiserar innovation samt vilka utmaningar de står inför. Frågorna har besvarats av antingen VD eller en medlem i ledningsgruppen med insyn i företagets hantering av innovation.Resultatet visar att -de flesta företagen inte skiljer på radikal och inkrementell innovation-i många företag används ordet innovation för all produkt- och tjänsteutveckling-de flesta företag ser en ökning av innovationstakten inom sin respektive bransch-de flesta företag uttrycker att innovation är viktigt, samtidigt som få företag har innovationsfrågor bland sina tre största utmaningar-hälften av företagen använder någon form av rutin för att stärka sin förmåga att skapa nya produkter och tjänster, men endast ett fåtal använder flera olika rutiner-förstainnovationsföretagen (mindre, relativt nystartade företag) skiljer sig från de övriga i det att de är starkt innovationscentrerade-många företag välkomnar stöd från akademin, men endast ett fåtal önskar stöd att öka sin innovationsförmågaCBIs samtliga seniora forskare har genomfört intervjuerna.

- Business model innovation processes in established firms that are running profitable businesses are currently poorly investigated. By drawing on the problem-solving perspective, this papers shows that the identification and formulation of problems guide business model innovation processes. Findings from case studies of three world leading manufacturing firms show that the main encountered business model problems included product-market fit, value capture failure, and customers’ lack of trust and risk aversion towards novel solutions. Based on the empirical evidence, this paper proposes determinants necessary for progression of the business model innovation process: (1) By theoretically equating business model innovation processes with search, to profit firms shift from experiential or backward-looking search to forward-looking or cognitive search to create or discover new business model options. This shift is not sufficient for business model innovation; (2) To progress there may be a need for changes in the complexity of the problems, altering the firm’s fitness landscape allowing for backward- looking problem-solving by drawing on existing knowledge and capabilities, and (3) Firms need to ‘risk their business’ by moving from offline evaluation to online evaluation for the business model innovation to come to fruition. In the general case, each of the main problems may need to progress across (1)-(3) for a business model innovation to emerge. The contribution of the paper is a change in the unit of analysis by focusing on problem formulation and problem solving, and introduces a mechanism for explaining how business model innovation processes unfolds. This mechanism is also able to handle prior explainations on business model innovation processes; the sequential and experimental approaches.

- Digital platforms are often characterized as enablers of new ecosystems. However, platforms are sometimes introduced into pre-existing ecosystems, where a platform’s ability to harmonize with the ecosystem is critical for its success. This article draws on the case of digital healthcare platforms and introduces the concept of platform grafting, which denotes the process of integrating a new platform into a pre-existing ecosystem, leading to a coevolutionary process of adapting both the platform and the surrounding ecosystem. Dynamic capabilities are critical for successfully integrating the platform into the ecosystem, and this article provides a capabilities framework for understanding platform grafting.

- This study explains the business model innovation processes in industrial firms. Drawing on three case studies of leading business-to-business firms shifting from product-based to service-based business models, it introduces problems as a theoretical concept to explain business model innovation processes. We show how formulating and solving problems guide the search for a viable business model and why some problem formulation and solving activities lead firms to shift between backward-looking and forward-looking searches. The decision to shift to a forward-looking search is triggered by the perception of failure to continue with an established way of working, while the shift to a backward-looking search is based on the perception of high alternative costs. We contribute to the business model innovation and servitization literature by theorizing the process of business model innovation and providing implications for managers.

- This article explains why firms move downstream to profit from the value they create for customers through improved control. Under certain circumstances, product innovations and services are dynamically interdependent in the sense of improved control creating value for the customer. Since value capture is distinct from value creation, firms may need to change their means of appropriation to profit. Empirically, the article analyses how firms can renew their product offerings by incorporating control technologies into their traditional mechanical engineering products. In contrast to a strand in the recent strategy literature that argues that manufacturing firms should move downstream to deliver complementary services, this article explains these shifts as related to increased control, economies of throughput, value creation, and value capture. The article contributes to the throughput and control technology literature by showing the importance of differentiating value creation from value capture. The increased control by means of digitalization and the discrepancy between value creation and value capture explains why many manufacturing firms will become service firms.
