  • A literature review about young people with intellectual disabilities and social media
  • 2017
  • In: Cyberspace 2017.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Previous research has studied internet use in youth and adults in general, but little is known about how young people with intellectual disabilities use the Internet and social media. The available research indicates that there are risks and barriers but also opportunities to be found. While there are risks for victimization and bullying and barriers in terms of difficulties caused by literacy and communication skills, cyber-language, cyber-etiquette and accessibility, there are also opportunities such as friendships, development of social identity and self-esteem and enjoyment. The purpose of this study is to conduct a literature review of the research field, with special focus on young people with intellectual disabilities and social activities on the Internet. A search strategy was designed in collaboration with the Gothenburg University library. The databases Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar was chosen due to their multi-disciplinary character. The search was limited to scientific journal articles and brief reports published in English. Search terms were chosen and combined with Boolean operators. Search was concluded in May 2017. After articles off topic and cross references were removed, 12 of 452 publications remained. The preliminary analysis showed that most research was conducted in Europe and North America. The studies were primary from psychology, education, medicine and social science. More than half of the studies were published after 2015 indicating a rapidly growing field. Most of the studies were qualitative. The studies were grouped thematically based on content: opportunities, risks, vulnerability, barriers, sexuality, identity and support.

    • ”Aldrig mer etnografi!”

  • Tensions between risk, coping and support: young people with intellectual disability in Sweden and Internet-related support
  • 2023
  • In: Disability and Society. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0968-7599 .- 1360-0508. ; 38:3, s. 1-23
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Young people with intellectual disability seem to be more vulnerable on the Internet than youth in general. Therefore, it is important to investigate not only their strategies for managing negative online experiences but also how they experience Internet-related support. This study applies a qualitative and interpretative approach drawing on individual and pair interviews with pupils in upper secondary special programme schools in Sweden. A thematic analysis resulted in the following themes: ‘a lesson to be learned’, ‘the important role of siblings’, ‘the dilemma of support’ and ‘negotiation of control’. With regard to negative online experiences, strategies for managing privacy, safety and risky situations are understood as problem-focused coping and efforts to manage external/internal demands. The central role of social networks is emphasised with regard to Internet-related support. It is concluded that online restrictions may discourage open dialogue. A perspective of positive risk-taking, focusing on opportunities rather than risks, is advocated. Points of interest This article investigates the participants’ perspectives in their own words. The key contribution of the paper is finding out how young people with intellectual disability in Sweden handle negative online experiences and how they experience Internet-related support. The study highlights a range of themes from lessons learned and sibling relationships to problems of support and control that reflect many social and individual characteristics. The participants use different coping strategies to handle negative online experiences. They seem to manage privacy and safety on their own and refuse control in risky situations. With regard to Internet-related support, the participants prefer turning to their social network (family and friends) rather than public authorities (teachers in school). This type of research is important because it focuses on young people with intellectual disability and their vulnerability online as well as the development opportunities for Internet-related support.

  • Unga kvinnor med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning – erfarenheter av självpresentationer på internet : Young women with intellectual disability: Experiences of self-presentations on the Internet
  • 2022
  • In: Socialvetenskaplig tidskrift. - 1104-1420. ; 29:1, s. 91-110
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Recent research emphasizes how important it is for young people with intellectual disability to explore and express different social identities. A gender-neutral approach is still relatively common in social science, and there is a lack of studies on young women with intellectual disa-bility and identity formation in digital arenas. Thus, the overall aim is to study young women with intellectual disability and their experiences of presentation of the self on the Internet, more specifically, how the Internet and social media generate conditions for alternative identity con-structions and the way these are manifested. This study is based on interviews with young women with intellectual disability (n=17) aged 16–21. The interviews with the participants were carried out during 2017 and 2018 in various forms: individual interviews, pair-interviews and focus groups. The analysis was inspired by inter-pretative phenomenological analyses (IPA) and indicated four themes: being yourself; being cau-tious and avoiding showing your body; fake identity and beautifying; and when the image does not match. The results were interpreted in a framework of interactionism and highlighted negotiations at different levels and in various areas. The most salient were negotiations about risk and oppor-tunity, arenas online and offline, and normality and deviance. The results indicated that young women with intellectual disability appear to be in a field of tension between risk and opportunity. The Internet seems to offer them the opportunity to explore different identity expressions, though it can also be compared to a minefield in which they need to navigate between the risks. This leads to caution, which is relevant but can be experienced as inhibiting, and places great demands on those around them: parents and professionals. One way to approach this phenomenon is dialectic participation and positive risk taking.

  • Young People with Intellectual Disabilities and Social Media : A Literature Review and Thematic Analysis
  • 2019
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research. - : Stockholm University Press. - 1501-7419 .- 1745-3011. ; 21:1, s. 129-140
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: The aim of this review is to identify and analyse the research findings in the field of young people with intellectual disabilities and social media.Method: Twelve peer-reviewed papers published in well-established and recognized journals between 2001 and 2017 were identified from electronic database searches (Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar), the Internet (Facebook) and correspondence with experts. Results: Six topics were identified through thematic analysis of the texts: opportunities, risk and vulnerability, sexuality, identity, barriers and support. Conclusion: The latest research on young people with intellectual disabilities is characterized by issues of risk, vulnerability and support. The concept of positive risk-taking is suggested for the development of methodological approaches in practice and research. Furthermore, vulnerability, online and offline activities and identity formation should be examined more closely, and there is a call for new research methods in this area, for example observations and netnography.

  • Young people with intellectual disability and the internet: Challenges and opportunities in qualitative research
  • 2023
  • In: Journal of Intellectual Disabilities. - : SAGE Publications. - 1744-6295 .- 1744-6309. ; 27:3, s. 598-612
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Conducting qualitative research on young people with intellectual disability and the Internet poses methodological challenges as well as opportunities. Based on memos from a qualitative study, this article focuses on identified gaps related to the challenges of informed consent, access to Internet arenas and using stimulus materials. Opportunities, in terms of flexibility and relationships, are discussed and problematized. The discussion shows that researchers may need to move out of their comfort zone and try nonconventional methods of data collection. It is important to be creative and innovative but also to look after the rights and interests of participants. Furthermore, take a non-directive approach and assume young people with intellectual disability to be experts on their own lives. Finally, the power imbalance between a researcher and participant should be considered and the researcher should ask him-/herself which perspective he/she wishes to present or ‘whose side are we on?’
