  • Correlated electron behavior of metal-organic molecules : Insights from density functional theory combined with many-body effects using exact diagonalization

    • A proper theoretical description of the electronic structure of the 3d orbitals in the metal centers of functional metalorganics is a challenging problem. We apply density functional theory and an exact diagonalization method in a many-body approach to study the ground-state electronic configuration of an iron porphyrin (FeP) molecule. Our study reveals that the consideration of multiple Slater determinants is important, and FeP is a potential candidate for realizing a spin crossover due to a subtle balance of crystal-field effects, on-site Coulomb repulsion, and hybridization between the Fe-d orbitals and ligand N-p states. The mechanism of switching between two close-lying electronic configurations of Fe-d orbitals is shown. We discuss the generality of the suggested approach and the possibility to properly describe the electronic structure and related low-energy physics of the whole class of correlated metal-centered organometallic molecules.

    • In this introductory chapter to the volume, the editors present the findings from a literature review undertaken on the topic, and link classical organizational perspectives to the study of merger processes involving higher education institutions. The chapter provides a brief overview of developments across Nordic higher education by referring to Burton Clark’s famous ‘triangle of coordination’. The authors conclude by sketching out the rationale and aim of the comparative study, the ways in which the volume is organized and by providing a short summary of its individual contributions.

    • We quantify the theoretical uncertainties of chiral effective-field-theory predictions of the muon-deuteron capture rate. Theoretical error estimates of this low-energy process are important for a reliable interpretation of forthcoming experimental results by the MuSun Collaboration. Specifically, we estimate the three dominant sources of uncertainties that impact theoretical calculations of this rate: those resulting from uncertainties in the pool of fit data used to constrain the coupling constants in the nuclear interaction, those due to the truncation of the effective field theory, and those due to uncertainties in the axial radius of the nucleon. For the capture rate into the S01 channel, we find an uncertainty of approximately 4.6s-1 due to the truncation in the effective field theory and an uncertainty of 3.9s-1 due to the uncertainty in the axial radius of the nucleon, both of which are similar in size to the targeted experimental precision of a few percent.

    • Research into children’s audiovisual media often focuses on issues such as the psychological impact of exposure to violence and aggression on children’s behaviour and the influence of media on children’s views on gender, body image and ethnicity. As children are more malleable than adults and, as a result, more vulnerable to such media, its impact can indeed be considerable. The same applies to the influence of the language used in such media on children's linguistic development, since the target audience is still at an early stage of acquiring this (native or foreign) language. However, in many countries, children programmes are mostly imported and, hence, have to be translated. Audiovisual translation research into children’s media is, therefore, arguably even more important. Even in so-called “subtitling countries”, these - mainly dubbed - audiovisual products, but also the language used therein are, thus, worthy of closer scrutiny. With audiovisual translation studies having moved away from purely linguistic analyses, some scholars (Di Giovanni 2011, Pavesi 2018) have - rightfully so - called for a reappraisal of the study of the language of audiovisual translation (without ignoring its multimodality), particularly, in such programmes for children. Children’s programmes have been criticized for being out of touch with reality when it comes to portraying children (e.g. Götz et al. 2018). Many children, therefore, will not recognize themselves or the people around them in the characters they are presented with, but also linguistically such programmes can be out of touch with the linguistic reality in which children live. In this paper, I discuss these diversity issues in children's television and what translation strategies have recently been adopted in Sweden and Belgium to compensate for these on-going issues in children's media.

    • The current strategies for controlling tuberculosis (TB) are not sufficient. Improved prophylactic and diagnostic tools are imperative, being crucial for decreasing TB incidence and mortality and for preventing outbreaks. Furthermore, new and better drugs are badly needed, particularly considering the increase in cases with multidrug-resistant strains. The current TB vaccine-the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccine-has a preventive impact on disseminated TB in children, but little effect on the most common form of TB, that is, lung TB in adults and young adults. For many years extensive scientific efforts have been made in order to develop new vaccines against TB that are better and more effective than Bacillus Calmette-Guérin. No such vaccine exists, however, to date. During the last few years it has become increasingly clear that TB patients can be infected with more than one strain and that a previous TB infection increases rather than decreases the risk for getting a new one. Mycobacterium tuberculosis organisms are thus not capable of inducing protective immunity to such an extent that a new TB infection is prevented. This phenomenon highlights the problems of developing effective vaccines against TB. A new TB vaccine based on general immunological protection models would in all probability only have a limited capacity to hamper TB incidence and mortality. The question whether or not it is feasible to make a vaccine of sufficient efficacy must therefore be discussed. Prophylaxis is practically always far better than therapy and we all wish we had an effective TB vaccine. However, considering the problems with vaccines, scientific efforts could well focus on developing new therapies rather than new vaccines. New scientific approaches are highly necessary and we need ideas and visions. Some examples of recent projects will hereby be presented. One study concerns the mycobacterial cell envelope and its unique macromolecules as targets for new drugs. Another study concerns new ways of administrating the drugs which could enhance the effects of new as well as of already available drugs. In addition, what can be learnt from cancer therapy-is supporting the patient's own defense by immune modularly methods a possible approach? We also need to look back since ample knowledge on TB has been assembled during many years. Unfortunately some of this valuable knowledge is about to be forgotten, particularly, the experience from the time when TB was an incurable disease.
