    • <b><i>Background:</i></b> We explored the association between ionizing radiation (IR) from pre-natal and post-natal radio-diagnostic procedures and brain cancer risk within the MOBI-kids study. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> MOBI-kids is an international (Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Spain, The Netherlands) case-control study including 899 brain tumor (645 neuroepithelial) cases aged 10–24 years and 1,910 sex-, age-, country-matched controls. Medical radiological history was collected through personal interview. We estimated brain IR dose for each procedure, building a look-up table by age and time period. Lifetime cumulative doses were calculated using 2 and 5 years lags from the diagnostic date. Risk was estimated using conditional logistic regression. Neurological, psychological and genetic conditions were evaluated as potential confounders. The main analyses focused on neuroepithelial tumors. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Overall, doses were very low, with a skewed distribution (median 0.02 mGy, maximum 217 mGy). ORs for post-natal exposure were generally below 1. ORs were increased in the highest dose categories both for post and pre-natal exposures: 1.63 (95% CI 0.44–6.00) and 1.55 (0.57–4.23), respectively, based on very small numbers of cases. The change in risk estimates after adjustment for medical conditions was modest. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> There was little evidence for an association between IR from radio-diagnostic procedures and brain tumor risk in children and adolescents. Though doses were very low, our results suggest a higher risk for pre-natal and early life exposure, in line with current evidence.

    • Axenic culture of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris ATCC((R)) 13482 and Scenedesmus obliquus FACHB 417 was used for phycoremediation of primary municipal wastewater. The main aim of this study was to measure the effects of normal air and CO2-augmented air on the removal efficacy of nutrients (ammonia N and phosphate P) from municipal wastewater by the two microalgae. Batch experiments were carried out in cylindrical glass bottles of 1L working volume at 25 degrees C and cool fluorescent light of 6500lux maintaining 14/10h of light/dark cycle with normal air supplied at 0.2Lmin(-1) per liter of the liquid for both algal strains for the experimental period. In the next set of experiments, the treatment process was enhanced by using 1, 2 and 5% CO2/air (vol./vol.) supply into microalgal cultures. The enrichment of inlet air with CO2 was found to be beneficial. The maximum removal of 76.3 and 76% COD, 94.2 and 92.6% ammonia, and 94.8 and 93.1% phosphate after a period of 10days was reported for C. vulgaris and S. obliquus, respectively, with 5% CO2/air supply. Comparing the two microalgae, maximum removal rates of ammonia and phosphate by C. vulgaris were 4.12 and 1.75mgL(-1)day(-1), respectively, at 5% CO2/air supply. From kinetic study data, it was found that the specific rates of phosphate utilization (q(phsophate)) by C. vulgaris and S. obliquus at 5% CO2/air supply were 1.98 and 2.11day(-1), respectively. Scale-up estimation of a reactor removing phosphate (the criteria pollutant) from 50 MLD wastewater influent was also done.

    • This chapter aims to bring out the potential of stake-holder interaction and to find methods to help assess the expectations of stake-holders. Results are presented from an empirical study conducted at a typical integrated steel plant located in a central-eastern part of India, determining the key stakeholders, assessing their expectations, examining the interaction of stakeholders with the organization, and the views and perceptions of managers and stakeholders. Organizations need to discuss successes and failures with a clear focus on the sustainability issues pertaining to short-term and long-term perspectives. Relationships and trust should be built with stakeholders. The other stakeholders who can be influenced by the company are shareholders, the community, suppliers and subcontractors. The outcome of the research is that stakeholder relationships can be improved by categorizing the stakeholders, developing stakeholder-specific strategies and strengthening communication. Communication with stakeholders can be further strengthened through various dialogue mechanisms.
