  • Av denna världen? : Emil Gustafson, moderniteten och den evangelikala väckelsen
  • 2012
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between evangelicalism and modernity with the Swedish holiness preacher Emil Gustafson (1862–1900) as a case. This is achieved by comparing Gustafson’s spirituality with Charles Taylor’s characterization of modernity. The investigation identifies five central themes in Gustafson’s spirituality: conversion, calling, suffering, sanctification, and spiritual experience. With regard to these themes paral-lels with modernity are noted. For example, the analysis shows that modern individualism influenced Gustafson’s view of conversion, and that instrumental rationality informed his evaluations of his own work as a preacher. But there are also instances where he distanced himself from modernity. He did not embrace a modern optimistic anthropology, or the view of suffering as purely negative. It is concluded that Gustafson is neither anti-modern, nor identical to Taylor’s depiction of modernity. He represents one kind of modernity. One that is theocentric rather than anthropo-centric. In order to uphold this theocentric character Gustafson’s opposition to the basic struc-ture of modernity had to be grounded in social practices. For instance, his negative anthropol-ogy was grounded in the revival-meeting where outsiders were called to repent and rely on God rather than themselves. Based on the results from this study it is suggested that evangelicalism should be inter-preted as neither in conflict with modernity, nor in continuity with it, but rather as a kind of modernity. There are multiple modernities, and evangelicalism is one of them.

  • Predikantskap och församling : Sex fallstudier av en ecklesial baspraktik inom svensk frikyrklighet fram till 1960-talet
  • 2006
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to discuss the ecclesial character of preacherchip, and to present a deeper understanding of it as a fundamental expression of being church. The underlying hypothesis is that different kinds of preachership are creating different kinds of ecclesial communities. And vice versa: Various kinds of ecclesial communities are creating different kinds of preachership . The discussion is related to six ecclesiological case studies of preachership within the Free Church traditions in Sweden. The preachers are F. O. Nilsson (1809–1881), the founder of the first Baptist congregation in Sweden; P. P. Waldenström (1838–1917), theologian and the leader of the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden; Nelly Hall (1848–1916), travelling preacher and missionary in the Holiness Movement in Sweden; Hj. Danielson (1881–1954), Baptist minister in Stockholm and one of the first preachers on the radio; L. Pethrus (1884–1974), minster in Filadelfiakyrkan in Stockholm and the leader of the Swedish Pentecostal Movement; C. G. Hjelm (1903–1965), travelling Pentecostal Baptist minister and a popular preacher on casette tapes. Different elements in the act of preaching – sermon, listener, preacher and situation – are revealed and analysed in the case studies. At the end of each case study the various elements are comprehended in an ecclesial practice, here named preachership (cf. leader – leadership, episkopos – episkopé). This concept of preachership transcends traditional understandings of ministries in the churches. Preachership as a result of the analysis is used to discover operative ecclesiologies in the communites, formed and integrated by preachership. The thesis shows that there has been an unprecedented multitude of ecclesiologies within the Free Church traditions in Sweden. The Church has a fundamental communicative charachter, and in one sense the Church arises from listening. The sign and instrument for this is an ecclesial practice – preachership.

  • Georg Gustafsson - församlingsledare, predikant och förebedjare inom den svenska Pingströrelsen
  • 2008
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This thesis is about the Pentecostal preacher Georg Gustafsson (1899-1983). The aim is to describe, analyse and evaluate his devoted service for the Swedish Pentecostal movement during more than 60 years of his life. The thesis describes the person, his lifetime achievement and the context within which his work was carried out. One important point of departure has been to understand his background and roots in the revival in Småland, characterized by pietism and neoevangelism/Rosenianism. A number of questions have been raised and answered in this study, one of them being: How did Georg Gustafsson as an individual, and the Pentecostal movement as a collective consider the call of God? Another question is how Gustafsson preached, and how his preaching in form and content fitted in with the homiletic tradition which Pentecostal Pastors represented during the 1900`s? The third question relates to Georg Gustafsson`s intercession and healing ministry. Why did he devote himself to such a ministry during 60 years, and to what extent was prayer for sick people characteristic for the Pentecostal movement during the period from 1920 to 1980?The fourth question I’ve tried to answer is: What responsibilities did Georg Gustafsson and other leading persons of the Swedish Pentecostal movement have regarding Swedish society during the 1900`s? It was first in the 1940`s that the Pentecostal movement began to be seriously interested in society-related issues. The fifth and last question is: How did Gustafsson react on the development within the Swedish Pentecostal movement itself? The answers are given in this thesis.
