    • Background: Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy (HPD) is an aggressive operation for treatment of advanced bile duct and gallbladder cancer associated with high perioperative morbidity and mortality, and uncertain oncological benefit in terms of survival. Few reports on HPD from Western centers exist. The purpose of this study was to evaluate safety and efficacy for HPD in European centers. Method: Members of the European-African HepatoPancreatoBiliary Association were invited to report all consecutive patients operated with HPD for bile duct or gallbladder cancer between January 2003 and January 2018. The patient and tumor characteristics, perioperative and survival outcomes were analyzed. Results: In total, 66 patients from 19 European centers were included in the analysis. 90-day mortality rate was 17% and 13% for bile duct and gallbladder cancer respectively. All factors predictive of perioperative mortality were patient and disease-specific. The three-year overall survival excluding 90-day mortality was 80% for bile duct and 30% for gallbladder cancer (P = 0.013). In multivariable analysis R0-resection had a significant impact on overall survival. Conclusion: HPD, although being associated with substantial perioperative mortality, can offer a survival benefit in patient subgroups with bile duct cancer and gallbladder cancer. To achieve negative resection margins is paramount for an improved survival outcome.

  • Survey of bidirectional transmittance distribution function measurement facilities by multilateral scale comparisons

    • In recent years, a growing demand for the capability of performing accurate measurements of the bidirectional transmittance distribution function (BTDF) has been observed in industry, research and development, and aerospace applications. However, there exists no calibration and measurement capabilities-entry for BTDF in the database of the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures and to date no BTDF comparison has been conducted between different national metrology institutes (NMIs) or designated institutes (DIs). As a first step to a possible future key comparison and to test the existing capabilities of determining this measurand, two interlaboratory comparisons were performed. In comparison one, five samples of three different types of optical transmissive diffusers were measured by five NMIs and one DI. By specific sample choice, the focus for this study lay more on orientation-dependent scatter properties. In comparison two, where one NMI, one DI, one university, and three industrial partners investigated their measurement capabilities, the dependence on the orientation was not assessed, but two additional samples of the same material and different thickness were measured. Results of the two comparisons are presented, giving a good overview of existing experimental solutions, and showing specific sample-related problems to be solved for improved future BTDF measurements.

  • Digitizing translucent object appearance by validating computed optical properties

    • The optical properties available for an object are most often fragmented and insufficient for photorealistic rendering of the object. We propose a procedure for digitizing a translucent object with sufficient information for predictive rendering of its appearance. Based on object material descriptions, we compute optical properties and validate or adjust this object appearance model based on comparison of simulation with spectrophotometric measurements of the bidirectional scattering-surface reflectance distribution function (BSSRDF). To ease this type of comparison, we provide an efficient simulation tool that computes the BSSRDF for a particular light-view configuration. Even with just a few configurations, the localized lighting in BSSRDF measurements is useful for assessing the appropriateness of computed or otherwise acquired optical properties. To validate an object appearance model in a more common lighting environment, we render the appearance of the obtained digital twin and assess the photorealism of our renderings through pixel-by-pixel comparison with photographs of the physical object.
