Micro-Teaching for Pre-Service Academic and Vocational Teachers’ Transformation of Content Knowledge

- Student teachers who previously have gained academic knowledge or vocational skills often find it challenging to transform content knowledge into teaching activities that contribute to their future secondary students’ learning. Student teachers express a need for pedagogical tools, time to practice, and opportunities for reflection. Previous research has shown that this can be achieved through micro-teaching, which in our interpretation implies that student teachers practice teaching 1) with a limited subject-specific content 2) for a limited amount of time 3) in a low-stakes situation. The aim of this study is to investigate in what ways micro-teaching can support student teachers in designing and conducting subject-specific and pedagogical teaching activities. Our research method is inspired by action research, and conducted in four steps. The first step is to carefully plan how to implement micro-teaching for student teachers in our own teaching. The second step is the implementation. In a third step, we evaluate student teachers’ experiences from conducting micro-teaching through a survey and individual interviews. The fourth step involves analyzing the results, and adjusting our initial plan for implementation of micro-teaching, if needed. Together, these four steps make up the first cycle. We plan to conduct a second cycle before the research questions can be answered. At the time of writing, we are conducting a first cycle in different subjects. Since the study is still in its infancy, there are no results to report, but we expect to find both similarities and differences between the different subjects in how micro-teaching can support student teachers in transforming existing content knowledge into teaching activities.

I denna bok har vi samlat fjorton av bidragen som presenterades på konferensen, skrivna av forskare och studenter vid Karlstads universitet.Håller engelskan på att förstöra svenskan? Är dagens elever sämre på att skriva än ungdomarna var för tjugo år sedan? Skall vi ha en litteraturkanon i skolan - och läser eleverna över huvud taget böcker nu för tiden? Detta är några av de frågor som ställs i artiklarna där svaren kanske kan överraska.Andra artiklar handlar om hur man stimulerar elever till att läsa och skriva, problematiken när det gäller att undervisa i svenska som andraspråk och varför elever väljer - eller inte väljer - att studera något annat främmande språk än engelska. Porten kanske finns där - men den är inte alltid helt lätt att öppna!

- Den här delen tar upp digitala verktyg i relation till elevers skriftliga produktion och interaktion. Bland annat belyses olika kommunikations- och interaktionsformer som skapas med hjälp av digitala verktyg, vilka möjligheter och fallgropar som finns att tänka på och hur man kan skapa en varierad och stimulerande användning av målspråket i skriftlig produktion och interaktion. Digitala verktyg erbjuder elever många möjligheter att utveckla sitt skrivande i moderna språk. Det är därför relevant att reflektera över hur man kan använda datorer, läsplattor eller mobiltelefoner till skrivaktiviteter för att främja elevers skrivande. Den här delen ger lärare även möjlighet att fundera över vilka verktyg och vilka arbetsformer de vill använda i olika situationer och även vad dessa kan åstadkomma.

- This article presents results from interviews with ten teachers engaged in Ladino (Judaeo Spanish) revitalisation. The purpose of the study is to collect Ladino teachers’ experiences to understand the challenges they face and the needs they express to continue their activities. Challenges were related to students’ linguistic backgrounds, students’ and teachers’ confidence about expressing themselves in Ladino, and to views on language normativity. The teachers expressed needs concerning finding stable teacher positions, about creating a Ladino proficiency test and certificate, developing resources for language teaching, and updating Ladino’s vocabulary to reflect contemporary life. Creating venues for learners to use the language, and opportunities for Ladino teachers to meet and discuss pedagogical issues were seen as important. The teachers’ views differed considerably regarding questions on language norms, and the need for an official language certificate. The results point to the need for further discussions, and for teacher development initiatives.

Effects of Google translate on lexical diversity: vocabulary development among learners of Spanish as a foreign language

- This article presents the results of a longitudinal study of vocabulary development among Swedish upper secondary school pupils of Spanish as a foreign language. During one schoolyear, the pupils (N=31) wrote four essays in Spanish, a pre-test and a post-test. 15 pupils used a printed dictionary as translation tool, 16 used Google Translate (GT). Vocabulary development was measured as the change in lexical diversity from pre-test to post-test, using Guiraud’s index. The results show that the use of GT leads to higher degrees of lexical diversity as long as it is used, but that the effect vanishes when the tool is no longer used. The results point to the need for a deeper understanding of language structure and lexicon, a reinforced focus on vocabulary in foreign language teaching, and a widened range of explicit instruction of translation tools and strategies.

El judeoespañol de Salónica : Rasgos característicos de la lengua, ejemplos de su contexto histórico y el estado actual

- Después de la expulsión de los judíos de España en 1492, Salónica fue uno de los centros más importantes de la cultura sefardí y de la lengua judeoespañola (el ladino). Esta situación terminó bruscamente con las deportaciones de los ciudadanos judíos a los campos de exterminio durante la ocupación alemana de los años 1941–1944. De una población ladinohablante de aproximadamente 50 000 personas antes de la ocupación quedaron solo 2000 individuos después de la guerra. Hoy, la cultura sefardí en Salónica todavía está viva, pero la lengua judeoespañola se habla solo por una decena o menos de personas. En la ponencia, se presentará el estado actual de la lengua judeoespañola en Salónica así que algunos esfuerzos de revitalización lingüística que se están efectuando en la ciudad y en otras partes del mundo.

- Aunque el empleo –a veces muy extenso– del Traductor de Google por estudiantes de lenguas extranjeras es un hecho bien conocido, sabemos todavía poco de cómo los estudiantes utilizan esta herramienta de traducción en línea, y hasta ahora los estudios sobre efectos del uso de la traducción automática son relativamente escasos. En esta ponencia se presentará un estudio longitudinal sobre el uso del Traductor de Google en un grupo sueco de estudiantes de español como lengua extranjera (edad 17-18 años, niveles A2-B1 del Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las lenguas). La escritura de redacciones por los 16 estudiantes del grupo fue observada durante un año escolar. Por medio de análisis de 43 horas de grabaciones de las pantallas de los ordenadores de los estudiantes, han sido observadas unas 7000 acciones de búsqueda en el Traductor de Google, las cuales resultaron en aproximadamente 4000 traducciones de palabras sueltas y de frases. Las acciones de búsqueda pueden ser divididas en cinco categorías mayores de estrategias de búsqueda, frecuentemente combinadas de manera compleja. Estas estrategias de búsqueda serán presentadas y discutidas desde una perspectiva didáctica. Efectos del uso del Traductor de Google sobre la diversidad léxica en los textos escritos por los alumnos, mesurados con el índice de Guiraud y comparados a la diversidad léxica en los textos de otro grupo que utilizó diccionarios impresos, serán también presentados. Los ejemplos que se presentarán son en español, sueco e inglés, pero son relevantes también para la enseñanza de otros idiomas romances. Preguntas se podrán hacer en español, francés e italiano.
