  • The Jewel of Annual Astrology : A Parallel Sanskrit-English Critical Edition of Balabhadra’s Hāyanaratna
  • 2020
  • Other publication (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Jewel of Annual Astrology is an encyclopaedic treatise on Tājika or Sanskritized Perso-Arabic astrology, dealing particularly with the casting and interpretation of anniversary horoscopes. Authored in 1649 CE by Balabhadra Daivajña, court astrologer to Shāh Shujāʿ – governor of Bengal and second son of the Mughal emperor Shāh Jahān – it casts light on the historical development of the Tājika school by extensive quotations from earlier works spanning five centuries. With this first-ever scholarly edition and translation of a Tājika text, Martin Gansten makes a significant contribution not only to the study of an important but little known knowledge tradition, but also to the intellectual historiography of Asia and the transmission of horoscopic astrology in the medieval and early modern periods.

  • A Note on the Indian Planetary Exaltations and their Greek-Language Sources
  • 2020
  • In: History of Science in South Asia. - : University of Alberta Libraries. - 2369-775X. ; 8, s. 77-82
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A close examination of the lists of planetary exaltations given by two of the earliest known Sanskrit authors on horoscopic astrology – Mīnarāja and Sphujidhvaja – solves the confusion surrounding Mīnarāja’s idiosyncratic assignment of degrees and suggests that both authors, and indeed all later Indian astrological literature, depended for this doctrine on a single, Greek-language source.

  • 2018
  • In: Astrology as Art : Representation and Practice - Representation and Practice. - 9781907767104 ; 10, s. 9-16
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The designation of astrology as an art raises some simple but fundamentally im-portant historical questions. How old is this designation, and, given that earlier generations of astrologers wrote in different languages, what words did they use that we translate as ‘art’? What are the connotations of those different words in their historical contexts? What other designations than ‘art’ would have been possible, and were such alternative labels used as well? Was astrology ever practised in cultural contexts where distinctions like that between ‘art’ and ‘science’ were not made? And if calling astrology an ‘art’ was not originally a question of aesthetics, was there still an aesthetic dimension to the practice of astrology, and how might we define or understand that dimension?

  • Astrologers
  • 2011
  • In: Brill’s Encyclopedia of Hinduism. - 9789004178946 ; 3
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • On the basis of historical representations in astrological as well as non-astrological sources, the article discusses the position and function of astrologers within Hinduism and in Indian society generally, with particular consideration of the changes arising from the introduction of Greek astrology during the former half of the first millennium, increasing Muslim dominance from late medieval times, and the utilization of the printing press during the 20th century. Different forms of astrological consultation are examined, as well as the varying roles of the astrologer as scholar, religious instructor, and ritual specialist.
