  • FindMyDoc : a P2P platform disrupting traditional healthcare models and matching patients to doctors
  • 2016

    • A variety of eHealth apps exist today ranging from ovulation calculators, such as Glow, to more sophisticated systems for determining the right therapist via semantic analysis, such as Talkspace, or ZocDoc. Despite their promising functionality, existing systems offer limited capabilities in terms of search filters, reviews, and doctor recommendations. In this paper, we propose FindMyDoc, a novel peer-to-peer healthcare platform that goes beyond existing traditional healthcare models. It provides doctor recommendations by allowing proper filtering based on treatment procedures, quality of treatment, and reviews of healthcare providers. In addition, the search results are refined using a recommendation engine that employs user-based collaborative filtering and exploits a set of predefined review options provided by the patients in order to match them with doctors.

  • The learner’s perceptions of an Integrated system for learning management of non-cognitive skills
  • 2020
  • In: Proceedings of the 19th European Conference on e-Learning. - 9781912764792 ; , s. 406-414
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Non-cognitive skills (NCS) are essential in increasing employability according to contemporary studies, but improving NC skills are less prioritised in typical education curricula. Work-based training programs and other upskilling programs offered in lifelong learning settings compensate for the gap of NCS requirements. However, standardised learning opportunities are in demand to increase the chances to compete in the labour market as highlighted by the Skills Agenda of the European Union. This article explores the learner's perceptions of a purpose-built LMS to support upskilling with NCS. The LMS consists of structure and content to learn, assess, and map the NCS skills with the learner's favorable occupations. This learning solution advances from the current education systems by strictly focussing on job-oriented learning, which means training the learner with a specific set of skills aiming at a selected job profile. The learner’s intention for learning NCS with the integrated LMS is tested with purposely selected sixty-one learners in three countries, Sweden, Spain, and Ireland. Based on the model for diffusion of innovations a baseline for investigation was created. Mapping the relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability and observability of the LMS provided a comprehensive picture of the maturity of the learning solution. A survey questionnaire is used for capturing user perceptions. Accordingly, 75% of the learners on average perceived the system as a learner-centric online digital solution that allows learning the definitions of NCS, as well as learning the NCS sets required by each occupation categorised according to the European occupation frameworks. The study outcomes included insights that could be concluded as recommendations for a learner-centric robust approach to learning NCS.

  • A value-driven approach to addressing misinformation in social media
  • 2021
  • In: Humanities and Social Sciences Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2662-9992. ; 8:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Misinformation in social media is an actual and contested policy problem given its outreach and the variety of stakeholders involved. In particular, increased social media use makes the spread of misinformation almost universal. Here we demonstrate a framework for evaluating tools for detecting misinformation using a preference elicitation approach, as well as an integrated decision analytic process for evaluating desirable features of systems for combatting misinformation. The framework was tested in three countries (Austria, Greece, and Sweden) with three groups of stakeholders (policymakers, journalists, and citizens). Multi-criteria decision analysis was the methodological basis for the research. The results showed that participants prioritised information regarding the actors behind the distribution of misinformation and tracing the life cycle of misinformative posts. Another important criterion was whether someone intended to delude others, which shows a preference for trust, accountability, and quality in, for instance, journalism. Also, how misinformation travels is important. However, all criteria that involved active contributions to dealing with misinformation were ranked low in importance, which shows that participants may not have felt personally involved enough in the subject or situation. The results also show differences in preferences for tools that are influenced by cultural background and that might be considered in the further development of tools.

  • Real-time information systems for public transport : user perspective
  • 2021
  • In: 23rd EURO Working Group on Transportation Meeting, EWGT 2020, 16-18 September 2020, Paphos, Cyprus. - : Elsevier. ; , s. 732-739
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Public transport (PT) agencies are expected to provide passenger-oriented services. There is a need to understand the user’s perception of information technologies, especially within specific socioeconomic and demographic groups. Because of this, and although public transportation agencies are integrating various systems, this work aims at assessing which type of real-time information (RTI) and display platform (DP) for PT are perceived as the most useful among different socioeconomic and demographic groups citizens. Surveys were disseminated in two different readiness level areas, to understand citizens preferences based on age, academic qualifications, public transportation usage, and access to such type of technologies. There was a total of 655 respondents, 196 in Portugal and 459 in Sweden. The most valued RTI were arrival/departure time (ADT) and trip planning (TP). Results suggest there are clear differences between the preferences of young and older users. While in Portugal, high percentage of young people prefer TP as RTI, in Sweden it was found that the percentage of respondents that prefer ADT or TP increases with the increase of age. With respect to DP, panels and apps are those with more votes. Results show in general, younger people prefer Apps and older people prefer RTI provided through panels. Moreover, the findings suggest that areas served with less technologies on information for public transport give more value of having access to RTI. These results are important to support public authorities on designing an integrated system with such technologies to be possibly implemented at a regional level.

  • Yes! I Want My Non-Cognitive Skills to Be Improved : Perceptions on an ICT-Enabled Learning Journey
  • 2021
  • In: International Journal of Emerging Technologies in Learning (iJET). - Vienna, Austria : International Association of Online Engineering (IAOE). - 1863-0383 .- 1868-8799. ; 16:22, s. 42-58
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Non-cognitive skills (NCS) are important for personal development and enhancing employability. However, as related literature points out, designs for NCS development are challenged by their fidelity, complexity, technology pedagogy and content value, user-centricity and so forth. Thus, this studyinvestigates on 1) how do individuals recognise their needs, challenges and motivations for improving NCS, and 2) how do they envision their individualroadmap towards NCS achievement. An exploratory strategy is followed in capturing the learners’ perceptions. Expected data were collected by a questionnaireaiming at a sample of 80 purposely selected employable adults, followed by interviews with 11 randomly selected individuals among the sample. The outcomesprovided feedback towards optimising design concepts for an NCS learning environment. Consequently, the framework for NCS improvement must includecomponents, in the order of importance, tools for assessment of NCS, premisesfor learning NCS, dynamic CV, and linking to the occupations of individual interests as envisioned by the respondents. The participants recognised the significance of NCS and that NCS contribute meaningfully to their personal and professional growth. As such, research efforts shall be invested in evaluating themethods and tools in a systematic user-centric process to determine their effectiveness and impact in lifelong learning.
