  • A university wide action research project to enhance teaching and learning through constructive alignment
  • 2011
  • In: Proceedings, SUHF konferens "Att leda högre utbildning".
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We report on a campus-wide educational development project at Chalmers where 35 courses were redesigned using constructive alignment as a conceptual tool. Scaffolding involved workshops, peer and facilitator assessment, and discipline-specific supervision. Increased constructive alignment competence and improved scholarship of teaching and learning practice are the main results. Weaknesses involved accessing literature, doing action research, and designing evaluation.

  • Peer Reviewing Across the Atlantic Patterns and Trends in L1 and L2 Comments Made in an Asynchronous Online Collaborative Learning Exchange Between Technical Communication Students in Sweden and in the United States
  • 2010
  • In: Journal of Business and Technical Communication. - : SAGE Publications. - 1050-6519 .- 1552-4574. ; 24:3, s. 296-322
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In a globally networked learning environment (GNLE), 16 students at a university in Sweden and 17 students at a university in the United States exchanged peer-review comments on drafts of assignments they prepared in English for their technical communication classes. The instructors of both sets of students had assigned the same projects and taught their courses in the same way that they had in the previous year, which contrasts with the common practice of having students in partnering courses work on the same assignment or on linked assignments created specifically for the GNLE. The authors coded the students' 816 comments according to their focus and orientation in order to investigate the possible differences between the comments made by the L2 students in Sweden and those made by the L1 (English as a second language) students in the United States, the possible impact of peer reviewing online, and the influence of the instructors' directions on the students' peer-reviewing behavior.

  • A Design for Intercultural Exchange – An Analysis of Engineering Students’ Interaction with English Majors in a Poetry Blog
  • 2011
  • In: Second language teaching and learning with technology: views of emergent researchers. - 9781908416001
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Web based writing platforms allowing for exchanges across the world are increasingly being used in education. These recent forms of textual practice are highly related to conditions offered by the technology, allowing users, who previously were primarily consumers, to become producers of text. This chapter investigates student interaction over a blog in an intercultural student exchange between native speakers and nonnative speakers of English in higher education analysing and interpreting poetry. The groups of students involved in this study belong not only to different academic disciplines, but also differ in terms of nationality and language background. In the blog posts, the students’ cultural voices are heard, offering a meeting between very contrasting groups. Scrutinising the student postings, the threaded discussions show ways that students thematise content and meaning in the poems. The results show that there are a number of features at play in an intercultural environment where language and translation issues are prominent parts of the student discussions, offering extended perspectives to the students’ initial views. Collaborative efforts in such a diverse environment are important when negotiating meaning and extending students’ understanding of poetry.

  • Improved content mastery and written communication through a lab-report assignment with peer review: an example from a quantum engineering course
  • 2021
  • In: European Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1361-6404 .- 0143-0807. ; 42:2
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The promotion of high-quality written communication in the disciplines is an important learning outcome in higher education. Given the time invested by students and teachers alike, it is crucial that writing assignments also promote engagement and content learning. But is it worth the time for university teachers to invest in such 'writing-to-learn' activityes? We find that it can be, and present an improved design for an experimental lab-report writing assignment in an English medium instruction environment, where English is an additional language. Our context is assignment development for formative assessment in master's-level physics, but the method is broadly applicable within the science-technology-engineering-math disciplines. Our first experience with the assignment resulted in substandard lab reports, suggesting insufficient subject understanding and prompting this assignment design. We therefore focused on communicating the alignment of aims, learning objectives, instruction, assessment criteria, and feedback design, and developed simplified rubrics facilitating assessment fairness and efficiency. The revised assignment enhanced the learning of the subject matter and the writing quality over the four years of the study, indicated by clearly improved reports and relevant peer feedback comments. The learning activity also had an observable but less distinct effect on the students' exam performance.

  • Cardiac structure and function is related to current blood pressure rather than to previous hypertensive pregnancy
  • 2015
  • In: Journal of Human Hypertension. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0950-9240 .- 1476-5527. ; 29:11, s. 702-704
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • One-hundred five women were examined with echocardiography and ambulatory blood pressure measurements 40 years post partum to evaluate the effect of former hypertensive pregnancies versus current blood pressure on cardiac structure and function. Hypertensive pregnancies did not have an adverse effect on the heart, but current minor elevation in blood pressure had a negative impact on the myocardium. The increased prevalence of hypertension following hypertensive pregnancies may be a crucial factor regarding the increased risk for cardiovascular disease shown in affected women.
