  • International Cooperation for Remote Laboratory Use
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Contributions to Higher Engineering Education. - Singapore : Springer. - 9789811089176 ; , s. 1-31
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experimenting is fundamental to the training process of all scientists and engineers. While experiments have been traditionally done inside laboratories, the emergence of Information and Communication Technologies added two alternatives accessible anytime, anywhere. These two alternatives are known as virtual and remote laboratories and are sometimes indistinguishably referred as online laboratories. Similarly to other instructional technologies, virtual and remote laboratories require some effort from teachers in integrating them into curricula, taking into consideration several factors that affect their adoption (i.e., cost) and their educational effectiveness (i.e., benefit). This chapter analyzes these two dimensions and sustains the case where only through international cooperation it is possible to serve the large number of teachers and students involved in engineering education. It presents an example in the area of electrical and electronics engineering, based on a remote laboratory named Virtual Instruments System in Reality, and it then describes how a number of European and Latin American institutions have been cooperating under the scope of an Erasmus+ project, for spreading its use in Brazil and Argentina.

  • 1060 nm VCSELs for long-reach optical interconnects
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Optical Fiber Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1095-9912 .- 1068-5200. ; 44, s. 36-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reach extension of high capacity optical interconnects based on vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) and multimode fibers (MMFs), as needed for large-scale data centers, would benefit from high-speed GaAs-based VCSELs at 1060 nm. At this wavelength, the chromatic dispersion and attenuation of the optical fiber are much reduced in comparison with 850 nm. We present single and multimode 1060 nm VCSELs based on designs derived partly from our high-speed 850 nm VCSEL designs. The single-mode VCSEL, with a modulation bandwidth exceeding 22 GHz, supports back-to-back data rates up to 50 Gbps at 25 °C and 40 Gbps at 85 °C under binary NRZ (OOK) modulation. Using mode-selective launch, we demonstrate error-free 25 Gbps transmission over 1000 m of 1060 nm optimized MMF. Higher data rates and/or longer distances will be possible with equalization, forward-error-correction, and/or multilevel modulation.

  • Burden of established cardiovascular disease in people with type 2 diabetes and matched controls : hospital-based care, days absent from work, costs, and mortality
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Diabetologia. - : Springer. - 0012-186X .- 1432-0428. ; 64:Suppl. 1, s. 17-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background and aims: Established cardiovascular disease (eCVD) is associated with need for healthcare interventions, reduced work capacity and excess mortality. People with type 2 diabetes have increased risk and earlier onset of eCVD compared to people in general. The objective was to assess the burden of hospital-based care, days absent from work, associated costs, and excess mortality for people with type 2 diabetes with and without eCVD with comparison to matched controls.Materials and methods: The study used a Swedish retrospective data-base cross-linking longitudinal individual-level data (2007-2016) from national population-based health, social insurance, and socio-economic registers for 454,983 people with type 2 diabetes and their matched controls (5:1 on year of birth, sex, and region of residence). Statuse CVD (coronary artery disease, stroke, amputation, periphery vascular disease, non-fatal cardiac arrest, or related interventions) was derivedf rom retrospective data 1997-2006 and updated at change of status 2007-2016. Use of hospital-based care, days absent from work (calendar days) and mortality used data 2007-2016. Regression analysis accounting for individual-level clustering was used for comparison to controls and to attribute costs of hospital-based care and days absent from work to eCVD and to individual complications considering multimorbidity. Excess mortality adjusted for age, sex, and educational level was attributed to eCVD using Cox proportional hazards. Results: Thirty percent (n=136,135) of people with type 2 diabetes up to age 70 years were observed with eCVD≥1 observation year in 2007-2016 (women 24% n=43,847; men 34% n=92,288). The mean annual costs of hospital-based care for diabetes complications were EUR 2,758 (95% CI 2,729 to 2,787) of which EUR 2,461 (95% CI 2,432 to 2,490)were attributed to people with eCVD (89%). Main drivers of costs of hospital-based care for people withe CVD were acute myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, and stroke; but also end-stage renal disease (ESRD) andeye disease confirming that eCVD is associated with an increased burden from other complications. eCVD was a leading cause behind work absence for both diabetes and controls. People with type 2 diabetes <66 years had on average 146 days absent (95% CI 145-147) of which 68 days (47%) were attributed to eCVD. Controls had 106 days absent of which 63 days (59%) were attributed to eCVD. The annual cost of eCVD work absence was EUR 9,337 (95% CI 9,150 to9,523) per individual. The highest work absence was attributed to ESRD, stroke, and heart failure. Type 2 diabetes without eCVD did not differ from controls regarding mortality risk, but type 2 diabetes with eCVD had a four-fold risk of death hazard rate 4.13 (95% CI 4.10 to 4.18) adjusting for age, sex, and educational level. Conclusion: This study assessed the size of the burden of eCVD-status in people with type 2 diabetes in three measures: 1) eCVD was associated with excess mortality; 2) 9 out of 10 EUR spent on hospital-based care for diabetes complications; and 3) even higher costs of days absent from work in the long-run. Reducing the risks of living with eCVD and post-poning the onset of eCVD remain central goals to reduce the burden of type 2 diabetes on the individual and on society.

  • 1060 nm Single-Mode VCSEL and Single-Mode Fiber Links for Long-Reach Optical Interconnects
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 37:13, s. 2963-2969
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the use of a 1060 nm single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and a 1060 nm single-mode fiber as a competitive single-mode technology for cost-and power-efficient long-reach optical interconnects. Error-free transmission (bit error rate < 10-12) over 2 km is demonstrated at bitrates up to 40 Gb/s under on-off keying non-return-to-zero (OOK-NRZ) modulation, without equalization, forward-error correction, or other forms of digital signal processing. The VCSEL is extensively characterized with respect to its static and dynamic performances, including the power-voltage-current characteristics, spectral characteristics, beam divergence, modulation response, relative intensity noise, and frequency chirp. The measured dependence of power penalty on fiber length is consistent with an analysis of chirp-induced pulse compression and broadening along the negative chromatic dispersion fiber.

  • BIOSAR 2010 - A SAR campaign in support to the BIOMASS mission
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of IGARSS 2011 Symposium, Vancouver, Canada, 24-29 July, 2011. - 9781457710056 ; , s. 1528-1531, s. 1528-1531
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The ESA funded campaign BioSAR 2010 was carried out at the forestry test site Remningstorp in southern Sweden, in support to the BIOMASS satellite mission under study. Fully polarimetric SAR data were successfully acquired at L- and P-band using ONERA's multi-frequency system SETHI. In addition with other data types gathered, e.g. LiDAR and in-situ measurements, the compiled data set will be used for analyses and comparisons with biomass estimation results obtained at the same test site in the campaign BioSAR 2007, in which DLR's E-SAR made the SAR imaging. Detection of forest changes, robustness of biomass retrieval algorithms and long-term P-band coherence will be in focus as well as cross-validations between the two SAR sensors.

  • Structural requirements for drug inhibition of the liver specific human organic cation transport protein 1
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0022-2623 .- 1520-4804. ; 51:19, s. 5932-5942
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The liver-specific organic cation transport protein (OCT1; SLC22A1) transports several cationic drugs including the antidiabetic drug metformin and the anticancer agents oxaliplatin and imatinib. In this study, we explored the chemical space of registered oral drugs with the aim of studying the inhibition pattern of OCT1 and of developing predictive computational models of OCT1 inhibition. In total, 191 structurally diverse compounds were examined in HEK293-OCT1 cells. The assay identified 47 novel inhibitors and confirmed 15 previously known inhibitors. The enrichment of OCT1 inhibitors was seen in several drug classes including antidepressants. High lipophilicity and a positive net charge were found to be the key physicochemical properties for OCT1 inhibition, whereas a high molecular dipole moment and many hydrogen bonds were negatively correlated to OCT1 inhibition. The data were used to generate OPLS-DA models for OCT1 inhibitors; the final model correctly predicted 82% of the inhibitors and 88% of the noninhibitors of the test set.
