  • Laser hybrid welding of high strength steels
  • 2001
  • In: Congress proceedings. - Orlando, Fla. : Laser institute of America. - 0912035730 ; , s. 125-134
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper presents results from an ongoing investigation into laser-arc-hybrid welding of thick, high strength steels used in the heavy mechanical and heavy automotive industries. The results include welding parameters for a 6 and 12 kW laser combined with conventional MIG/MAG equipment. In this work, the laser-arc-hybrid welding technique has been further developed and applied to thick steel plate welding, giving high quality welds at high speeds. Successful welds were obtained on 6-12 mm plate thickness with laser, plasma or sheared edges as received from the blanking process. Thereby any costly, additional joint preparation is avoided, giving the hybrid welding technique an enhanced potential for use in the heavy automotive and mechanical industries

  • ALOS PALSAR Calibration and Validation Results from Sweden
  • 2007
  • In: IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS 2007), Barcelona, Spain, July 23-27, 2007. ; DOI: 10.1109/IGARSS.2007.4423115, s. 1589-1592
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In 2006 calibration activities for ALOS PALSAR wereconducted in Sweden. Four five-metre trihedral corner reflectorsand three smaller dihedral reflectors were deployed and operatedduring eight months. 23 PALSAR scenes were acquired over thecalibration site allowing an evaluation of the quality and temporalstability of the data. Results show that the co-polarized datahave been stable during the whole calibration period with variationsin the trihedral responses lower than 0.7 dB. The measuredresolution in azimuth was 4.4 m and in slant range 4.7 m forsingle polarization images and 9.5 m for polarimetric data. Forthe cross-polarized data large variations in the dihedral responseswere found. It is assumed that this is caused by a larger sensitivityto pointing errors. For the polarimetric data, estimation ofFaraday rotation gave values ranging from 0.1º to 3º.

  • Mapping of Wind-Thrown Forests Using VHF/UHF SAR Images
  • 2007
  • In: IEEE 2007 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS 2007), Barcelona, Spain, July 23-27 2007. ; DOI: 10.1109/IGARSS.2007.4423313, s. 2350-2353
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • SAR images from the Swedish airborne CARABAS-II and LORA systems have been visually analyzed over simulated wind-thrown forest at both single tree and stand level. In ideal conditions, the results show that LORA is more accurate than CARABAS-II at detecting wind-thrown trees, regardless of tree size and direction of the fallen trees relative to flight heading. Furthermore, the visible single trees in the LORA images appeared more distinct than in the CARABAS-II images, which could be explained by the high resolution in the LORA images. Based on visual interpretation, it is likely that the detection of wind-thrown forests could be improved using VHF/UHF SAR images acquired both prior to and after a storm event.

  • IGF-I neuroprotection in the immature brain after hypoxia-ischemia, involvement of Akt and GSK3beta?
  • 2005
  • In: Eur J Neurosci. - : Wiley. - 0953-816X. ; 21:6, s. 1489-502
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) is a neurotrophic factor that promotes neuronal growth, differentiation and survival. Neuroprotective effects of IGF-I have previously been shown in adult and juvenile rat models of brain injury. We wanted to investigate the neuroprotective effect of IGF-I after hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in 7-day-old neonatal rats and the mechanisms of IGF-I actions in vivo. We also wanted to study effects of HI and/or IGF-I on the serine/threonine kinases Akt and glycogen synthase kinase 3beta (GSK3beta) in the phophatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) pathway. Immediately after HI, phosphorylated Akt (pAkt) and phosphorylated GSK3beta (pGSK3beta) immunoreactivity was lost in the ipsilateral and reduced in the contralateral hemisphere. After 45 min, pAkt levels were restored to control values, whereas pGSK3beta remained low 4 h after HI. Administration of IGF-I (50 microg i.c.v.) after HI resulted in a 40% reduction in brain damage (loss of microtubule-associated protein) compared with vehicle-treated animals. IGF-I treatment without HI was shown to increase pAkt whereas pGSK3beta decreased in the cytosol, but increased in the nuclear fraction. IGF-I treatment after HI increased pAkt in the cytosol and pGSK3beta in both the cytosol and the nuclear fraction in the ipsilateral hemisphere compared with vehicle-treated rats, concomitant with a reduced caspase-3- and caspase-9-like activity. In conclusion, IGF-I induces activation of Akt during recovery after HI which, in combination with inactivation of GSK3beta, may explain the attenuated activation of caspases and reduction of injury in the immature brain.

  • Om skolvalsfrågans rättvisedimensioner : En pedagogisk-filosofisk analys
  • 2022
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This thesis explores how philosophical perspectives of justice can facilitate a critical discussion and a deepened understanding of the school choice issue and how it can be related to fundamental pedagogical ends of education, such as developing children´s autonomy and educating them to become democratic citizens. The methodological approach is based on John Dewey’s view of pragmatism, which argues for an experimental process of inquiry incorporating reflection on alternative lines of action. According to this approach, analyses of Swedish school choice policy are conducted based on three philosophical perspectives of justice: John Rawls’ justice as fairness, Nancy Fraser’s understanding of justice as three-dimensional and participative, and Amartya Sen’s capability approach. These perspectives clarify the relationship and meaning of three value premises that are prominent in the concept of school choice and foundational to liberal democratic societies: individual freedom, pluralism, and equality. Thus, the explorative approach highlights three answers to how the issue of school choice might be viewed from the perspective of justice. These answers are integrated into three criteria that serve as a pragmatistbased understanding of educational matters of justice, suggesting 1) that people should be viewed as active, social, and capable of intelligent change—individual and social—through reflective action; 2) that people should be given equal rights and opportunities to participate in and access influence over how they lead their lives; and 3) that societal organization (as well as the education system) should promote both people’s individual and common potential to act, which presupposes the striving toward full, free communication within and between social groups. Although the analyses of current Swedish school choice policy reveal increased criticism toward the contemporary system of school choice, the expressed policy strategies for dealing with injustice mainly aim to adjust the terms of choice within the realm of a market-based education, not critically examine the market structure, itself. The thesis argues for a renewed conversation about school choice, mirroring the pragmatic approach to inquiry while targeting the inherent democratic, communicative potential of schooling.

  • Det vardagliga och det vetenskapliga : Om sociologins begrepp
  • 2011
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This dissertation concerns the relationship between sociology and everyday life and aims primarily to critically evaluate the positions taken in the theoretical discussion on sociological concept formation and its relation to everyday life and social sciences. The main theoretical positions in the debate are summarized in two ideal typological models: (1) The rationalist theory of an epistemological break between everyday life and social science, here represented by the scholarships of Émile Durkheim, Louis Althusser and Pierre Bourdieu; (2) the everyday-life-oriented theory of continuity between everyday life and social science, represented by Peter Winch, Harold Garfinkel and Dorothy E. Smith. By means of an explorative theoretical reconstruction and synthesis, another aim is to propose a pragmatic theory of the break between the everyday and science. This position can be found in an undeveloped version in Herbert Blumer’s idea of sensitizing concepts, but in a more advanced elaboration in Max Weber’s introduction of the ideal type, and in Alfred Schutz’ phenomenological reformulation of Weber’s interpretative sociology. The dissertation develops the pragmatic theory of break between everyday life and social science with insights from the philosophy of the later Wittgenstein.
