  • Robust Radiometric Normalization of the near Equatorial Satellite Images Using Feature Extraction and Remote Sensing Analysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Engineering. - : Scientific Research Publishing. - 1947-3931 .- 1947-394X. ; 15:2, s. 75-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Relative radiometric normalization (RRN) minimizes radiometric differences among images caused by inconsistencies of acquisition conditions rather than changes in surface. Scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) has the ability to automatically extract control points (CPs) and is commonly used for remote sensing images. However, its results are mostly inaccurate and sometimes contain incorrect matching caused by generating a small number of false CP pairs. These CP pairs have high false alarm matching. This paper presents a modified method to improve the performance of SIFT CPs matching by applying sum of absolute difference (SAD) in a different manner for the new optical satellite generation called near-equatorial orbit satellite and multi-sensor images. The proposed method, which has a significantly high rate of correct matches, improves CP matching. The data in this study were obtained from the RazakSAT satellite a new near equatorial satellite system. The proposed method involves six steps: 1) data reduction, 2) applying the SIFT to automatically extract CPs, 3) refining CPs matching by using SAD algorithm with empirical threshold, and 4) calculation of true CPs intensity values over all image’ bands, 5) preforming a linear regression model between the intensity values of CPs locate in reverence and sensed image’ bands, 6) Relative radiometric normalization conducting using regression transformation functions. Different thresholds have experimentally tested and used in conducting this study (50 and 70), by followed the proposed method, and it removed the false extracted SIFT CPs to be from 775, 1125, 883, 804, 883 and 681 false pairs to 342, 424, 547, 706, 547, and 469 corrected and matched pairs, respectively.

  • Investigating the potential circularity of a phone using Life Cycle Assessment
  • 2021
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report presents a life cycle assessment (LCA) case study of a mobile phone. The work is part of the POLICIA project where the overarching goal is to combine LCA and an economic-based model (POLICA CE model) into an integrated assessment. The aim of this model is to identify market failures and quantify policy effects of efficient combinations along the entire life cycle. The objective of the phone case study work is to enable the impact assessment of the LCA, to be incorporated into the POLICIA CE-model, so that environmental impacts of policies can be directly modelled and optimised. To achieve this, linear and circular variants of products were assessed to identify the components and life cycle stages that influence the environmental impact.  The materials and part production stages of the life cycle contribute most to the environmental impact, for all studied impact categories. Specifically, it is the integrated circuit and other electronic components that contribute most. This is turn implies that circular business models aimed at prolonging life or decreasing use of these components can provide the largest impact reductions.

  • Myocardial strains from 3D DENSE magnetic resonance imaging
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The ability to measure and quantify myocardial motion and deformation provides a useful tool to assist in the diagnosis, prognosis and management of heart disease. The recent development of magnetic resonance imaging methods, such as harmonic phase and displacement encoding with stimulated echoes (DENSE), make detailed non-invasive 3D transmural kinematic analyses of human myocardium possible in the clinic and for research purposes. As data acquisition technologies improve, quantification methods for cardiac kinematics need to be adapted and validated on the new types of data. In the present paper, a previously presented polynomial method for cardiac strain quantification is extended to quantify 3D strains from DENSE magnetic resonance imaging data. The method yields accurate results when validated against an analytical standard, and is applied to in vivo data from a healthy  human heart. The polynomial field is capable of resolving the measured material positions from the in vivo data, and the obtained in vivo strains agree

  • Anatomy, paleoecology, and taphonomy of the trilobite Buenellus from the Sirius Passet biota (Cambrian), North Greenland
  • 2002
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Specimens of the nevadiid trilobite Buenellus higginsi from the Sirius Passet Biota (Buen Formation: Cambrian) of North Greenland show a combination of features reflecting both biomineralized and non-biomineralized anatomy, and providing direct or indirect evidence of paleoecologic associations and taphonomic history. Buenellus illustrates some key aspects of the role that trilobites played in the Early Paleozoic Marine Revolution (apparently serving as both predator and prey); its role in sediment-excavation, however, is unknown. The Sirius Passet Biota has a low diversity and low abundance of mineralizing organisms. Buenellus specimens, which account for most of the biomineralized skeletal parts, are normally preserved as decalcified, articulated exoskeletons, parallel to bedding. Their composition is dominated by clay minerals, although quartz, chlorite, muscovite, and chloritoid, are present, indicating metamorphism of shale to greenschist grade. Specimens of B. higginsi were preferentially oriented ventral-up as collected; this suggests both that minor current reorientation of remains occurred on the sea floor, and that strata at the Sirius Passet locality are overturned. Carnivory on B. higginsi is implied by the remains of anomalocaridids and other potential predators, and by sublethal predation scars. Slight disarticulation in the thoracic region of some fossils may have resulted from either decay or scavenging. Slender traces associated with various arthropod body fossils, including those of B. higginsi, suggests scavenging. Coprolites containing trilobite sclerites are unknown, and isolated, fragmentary sclerites are rare. Preserved non-biomineralized parts of B. higginsi are: 1, slender antennae projecting from under the exoskeleton; and 2, axial structures (inflated cavities lined with silica and limonite). Three types of axial structures are present: 1, a large cavity in the rear-subcentral part of the cephalon (interpreted as the stomach cavity); 2, a narrow, smooth-sided, medial tube that tapers slightly posteriorly (interpreted as the intestinal tract); and 3, metamerically divided pairs of sagitally located structures (interpreted as midgut glands). A carnivorous feeding habit is suggested by the lack of sediment-filled guts in B. higginsi.
